Battle of Britain SE

For anyone who has this set, either in R2 or other, I just want to ask some questions regarding the subtitles. As this movie features some scenes in German / French dialogue, how's the subtitles? My DVD is R3 version (Indonesia - original release, not bootleg), and alas, NOT ALL dialogue in non-English language are translated! This version might be a direct port from HK or Korea - but I'm not sure. I knew something's missing because I have an old fullscreen VCD with burnt-in English sub on every scene that has German or French dialogue!

Also, at the end credits the writings are newly created (like a subtitle)!

How's in other region?

I have the R2 from the UK. Without turning on subtitles, all spoken German was subtitled in english. As far as end credits, didnt notice anything unusual there.

Hope this helps!

Oh? We'll I'll find out about it tonight. So in the R2 version, if the subtitle is on, then German language wouldn't be completely translated?

Yo Tony, I've tried this, turning off subtitle but the result remain the same. Not all German / French dialogue is translated. For instance, in the 1st chapter, when the French Soldier operating phone / radio, his dialogue is not subtitled. The 2nd chapter, when the German general gets off the plane, his conversation with other officers are not subtitled. And for an example of partial translation, at the end of the movie, where Marshall Goering swears, the subtitle only says "You have betrayed me!" while the complete subtitle should be "You have disappointed me! You have betrayed me!"
There are still many examples to list.

I'm not saying that the non-English dialogue is not translated at all; it's just that the subtitle is not complete. For R2, are you sure all German / French dialogue subtitled completely, including the scenes I mentioned above?

How about any other region ... R1 perhaps?

Oh well, I hope MGM can make explanation about this.

Same problem on the R2 Japanese DVD. I have the UE and ALL the dialogue has Japanese subs but not all the of the German/French have English subs. Hell, even some of the English dialogue doesn't even have English subs!

Hey Djangoman,

I just popped it in to check the scenes in question...haven't had a chance to watch the whole thing yet. First off, in my skimming around through various parts of the movie....the french/german scenes were automatically subtitled (without me turning on subs).

The first scene you asked about, with the French officer one the phone: without turning on the subs, no translation popped up. When i did use the subs, it simply says " (speaks french)."

The second scene, with the German officer unboarding the plane: Without turning on subs...nothing. But with subs on, the conversation is translated. "Welcome you in the name of the Second Luftwaffe." Answered by, "We are ready, General, we can start."

The third scene, with Goering, is translated as "You have not only let me down. You have betrayed me."

So looks like in order to really get everything, the subtitles have to be kept on the entire movie...at least with the R2 from the UK.

Hope this helps!

Drat! I never knew that for different regions there will be different subtitles setting! This means R2 has better subtitling! The scenes I mentioned, no subs at all there! Aaaargghh... sigh, but since it's cheap what can I say? R3 Indonesia SE only costs about USD 10. Ohh, anyway, thanks Tony and Pat, for the info.
