Windstruck and Tae Guk Gi
Just finished watching Windstruck. First off, I have to say that I'm a huge fan of My Sassy Girl--it's my favorite Korean movie. I didn't know anything about the premise of Windstruck so I went in without any preconceived notions or any expectations. Anyway, I found it quite enjoyable and actually liked it alot. I like Jeon Ji Hyun in these types of roles...I didn't like Il Mare as much; I'm not sure why.
Like most Korean movies, this one could've used a little editing to cut down the run time some and tighten it up a bit, but it was still alright. Koreans like to have 2 hour movies!
Also, there was a nice little surprise at the end of the movie...
Geez, I think this is my first post in like half a year or something.
Anywho, I'm also going to a free screening of Tae Guk Gi this Tuesday night...on the big screen. Man, I am so jacked up to see that. Can't wait! Oh, and I get a free hot dog, too.

She has to work Tuesday night so maybe I can take her to watch it when it starts playing regularly.

Who is holding that free screening you're going to, anyway? Someone is renting out a screen for a private screening? Or does the local Korean TV station hold contests for screenings like K5 and such?
In any case, hopefully you'll be seeing it again with that girl, then!

If you are, make sure to sign up for the email announcements--that's how I learned about the free screening and other crap. One of my best friends works at KBFD (the Korean station) so he got his free ticket from work since KBFD is a HUGE sponsor of HIFF (and maybe even helping to sponsor tomorrow night's free screening).

Well, I saw Tae Guk Gi, and I wasn't disappointed.
I'm a huge fan of war movies in general, having watched them with my dad on numerous occasions when I was little. I don't want to give away any of the plot since I know most of you reading this will watch the movie at some time or another. However, I will say that Jang Dong-Gun and Won Bin were excellent in their roles--especially Won Bin.
I cannot help but think that inevitably this movie will get compared with Saving Private Ryan. The action scenes were similar with the shaky camera effect and the mounds of dirt and pieces of bodies flying all over the place. I actually liked Tae Guk Ki better because I think the lead characters were developed better and I felt like I cared for them a lot more than I did for the characters in SPR.
I will also say that I liked this movie much, much more than Shiri, which was also directed by Kang Je-Gyu. Honestly, I didn't really care for Shiri and thought it was pretty boring.
The movie did seem to be longer than the actual run time (which was approximately 135 minutes or so...give or take). Like many Korean movies (and I don't know why!), it seems like you've reached a climax and the end of the movie is near, but all of a sudden more crap starts happening and you realize that the movie isn't wrapping up quite yet. Also, another problem I have with a lot of Korean movies is the way they end. A lot of times the ending is off the wall or it doesn't seem like a natural way to end the movie. In Tae Guk Gi, I felt that the second to the last scene and the last scene should have been switched around. Then again, what do I know.
My Sassy Girl is still my favorite Korean movie (and #2 on my all-time list behind The Shawshank Redemption), but Tae Guk Gi ranks up there with Old Boy and Memories of Murder on the quality list and list of must-see movies. I guess I'll watch my Limited Edition copy of Sil Mi Do tomorrow night (hopefully, if I have time!) so I can compare that one too.

Re: Windstruck and Tae Guk Gi
i finally got around to watching Windstruck. While i wasn't bowled over as i was with Jae-young Kwak's other directorial efforts, i did enjoy the film.
Don't forget that in the middle of the movie, when Jeon Ji Hyun's character tells the story of the "pinky promise"...
Going off on a tangent here:
i just noticed while watching Windstruck... does Jeon Ji Hyun have a lazy (right, i think) eye? Not that it diminishes her beauty in any way - i just never noticed it before.

I saw Tae Guk Gi yesterday. Thought it was quite good, though I expected even better. I like Jang Dong-Gun from other films; while I wasn't familiar with Won Bin, he gave a terrific performance.
On a side note, I saw Purple Butterfly starring Zhang Ziyi and Nakamura Toru today at the Doris Duke theatre. It was among the worst films I've seen in the past 5 years (which is out of at least 1,000 films). While it tries to play with timelines and different plot threads, it ends up a totally chaotic mess. And I swear neither Ziyi nor Toru crack a smile in the entire film. If you were to delete the LOOOOOOOONG pregnant pauses, long focused shots on angst-ridden faces, nonstop cigarette smoking as expression, it would be an hour shorter. Even the sporadic brutal violence is so poorly filmed that you can barely figure out what happened in a key scene.

I just watched Windstruck, and I loved it. I will never totally understand why so many seem to want to just write it off as nothing more than trash.
I thought it was very charming, and it worked well enough to move me throughout the film. It had the same effect that MSG had on me, in that after it was over I couldn't help but to smile and just be happy myself.
