Also, by using XPYES2004 as a coupon, you will receive $10 off their price. (The coupon is good for $10 off a $60 purchase) Thus, you can pre-order it for $84.95 shipped. Not bad, eh?

When the Oldboy SE was announced early this year, the UE was announced at the same time, and word was that it would contain a director's cut. Later, the director did an interview in DVD 2.0 (a Korean magazine) saying there would be no director's cut.
The sad thing is they probably won't subtitle the deleted scenes on the UE. At least if the deleted scenes were reintegrated into the film we'd have some subtitles on them!
I assume the FE will be the first two DVD discs of the UE. The soundtrack is available separately anyway, so if you bought the FE and the soundtrack you'd only be missing the 3rd disc (a documentary), a still book, and the copper box. This is all subject to change, of course. Starmax gave November as a release date for the FE, and they seem to be taken aback by all the negative reactions. For all we know, the FE will have a better transfer AND the DTS track, pissing off both SE and UE owners equally!
I'm of two minds about the FE. I definitely think the film could use a better transfer than what is on the SE. The SE looks fine on a small TV, but when I watch it on a larger screen it doesn't look so hot. I don't have the scratch to spring for the UE, and the FE, priced at around $20 - $25, would let me get the new (assumedly better) transfer. But then my Oldboy SE becomes a fancy bookend. Grrr.
The Koreans have started to get a little greedy w/ the LEs. The Silmido "LE" must have had a bigger press run than most regular editions! I see them going for $16-$20 on eBay now.
Here's a link to a DVD 2.0 article on the Oldboy UE, for all you who can read Korean...

I look at it this way: God put the UE in front of me and I took it. Same as when he put the SE in front of me a few months earlier... based on chatter i've read on various boards, this UE may be more limited than most other LE's, if only because they are allegedly producing only enough to cover the pre-orders and then are halting production. If that is indeed the case, why didn't Starmax just decide to use a mass-produced steel case, instead of one that (also allegedly) is hand made out of Copper?
One other point of note, KoreanDVDs have raised the price $16 from $71 to $86.

This thread needs a bump and what is a good bump without some info?
The production numbers have been released. Fewer than 2800 UE's were produced.
Starmax have also posted some screencaps of the new UE transfer (and compared it to the old SE). I must admit, the differences are striking.
Check the bottom three links on this page for a peek (the 4,5,6):

This has been known for quite some time, but Knowles of AICN has done a commentary for the film and it will be included on the UE. Of course, this is bound to incite mixed reactions...

I'm not holding my breath on this one, but perhaps Starmax will add some English subs on the commentaries and extras, just this once. Hardly a stretch, considering Knowles commentary will be subbed in Korean...
Just wishful thinking, I suppose.
NOTE: DVDasian.com says October 30th is the release date.

Just saw OLDBOY at the movie theatre - amazing power-art-house flick! I'd love to have it on DVD but come on, a 100 Dollars for 1 film? How do you explain that to your ladies?!? Argh, can't do it... . :-/

I'm sorta confused after reading this thread: are the commentaries / extras subbed or not? I know the extras probably won't be (par for the course), but I'm still unclear on the commentaries. Any help would be appreciated I'm seriously considering the UE.

Nothing but the film will be subbed in English. There will however be ONE commentary in English, by that guy from AICN. Alernate Korean subtitles will be available for that.
I'm pretty sure that's right.
