The Director's Cut really isn't substantially different than the theatrical cut. Most of the new footage is comprised of a few extra shots in each scene lingering on things longer. There are only 3 new pieces of dialogue in the whole movie.
It doesn't make the movie any better or worse, just longer.

I've checked the thread and nobody has mentioned if there are subtitles on "The Cause" or not... it seems that there are not, but can anyone confirm this? Thanks!

I think it's really too bad, judging by those pictures the videoquality of the new Korean disc is pretty bad (colorwise). I was gonna upgrade my Edco DVD to this new version, but it seems the Edco DVD has the best quality/price ratio, so I will keep it and probably still upgrade for the beautifull packaging.

???
Doesn't seem to make sense, Josh. An additional 22 minutes, but only a few shots that linger longer, and three bits of dialog? That doesn't seem to add up (and I still can't find the portion of the Shinco review that details the additions).

What I said earlier in this thread was "Most of the new footage is comprised of a few extra shots in each scene lingering on things longer". I did not say it was just a few extra shots in the whole movie. Many scenes are edited to run longer in the DC, but the changes are almost entirely those of pacing, not additional plot or dialogue.
I ran the two copies of the movie side-by-side on separate monitors to compare them. Any time the DC ran long, I'd pause the theatrical cut until the other one caught up. I managed to keep them in fairly decent sync this way. There are only three instances of new dialogue in the DC, and two of them are very brief.
Almost everything else constituted extra superflous shots in various scenes. For example, in the Golden Forest duel between Maggie Cheung and Zhang ZiYi, there are a lot more shots of them leaping around between the trees. The fight on the lake between Jet Li and Tony Leung has a lot more shots of them hopping around on the water. Does this extra footage make the scenes better? Not really. It just changes the pacing a little.
Some day when I find the time I'll do a detailed review with time-markers indicating the exact changes, but I've got a number of other things to get to in the meantime.

It's confirmed release in China on July 16 with three packages. It claims to be a complete new HD transfer.

Great, informative article Josh. Answered all the questions about EVD that I was curious about (remember, I was asking about the format before). Anyway, I'm really surprised about the poor two-channel audio on the discs (and somewhat less surprised about actual film prints being used for the transfers). Based on your review, I guess I better hold off on getting one for awhile (and after all this time, there have still been no additional EVDs released? Wow, they aren't exactly doing a good job of trying to push this new format

Since writing the article I've heard that the companies behind the development of EVD are facing legal troubles for supposedly "borrowing" some of their compression technology. The format appears to be dead in the water. I doubt any different players or discs will be released.
There's a lot more potential in HVD, and I do recommend the Skyworth HVD-3050 as an excellent region-free DVD player.

. I am looking forward to it very very much.
