What's The Best Edition Of The Bruce Lee Collection?
I noticed the beautiful-looking, Korean edition of the new Bruce Lee Collection. Is this the best version to get? The looks of this package is very appealing, but if the DVDs themselves aren't good quality, that would be a deal breaker. Thanks.

The HKL discs are probably better if the case is no big deal to you. Personally, I would rather have better PQ and Audio than a good looking box.

I have the HKL 30th Anniversary box. The PQ varies for each film. I'm not sure but it might have something to do with the original source material.
I really love this set and watch the discs as much as I can. I thought I read somewhwere that the Korean release has DTS soundtracks?? I may double-dip if I hear that the Korean version has superior pic quality and audio but I have not really heard that to be the case. |
The Korean set does have DTS but I haven't seen any reviews for the transfers yet. They are all anamorphic though. Way Of The Dragon is Cantonese only and I thought that one may have been shot in English.....I could be wrong though.

The longer cut has Bruce asking the little girl for ice cream, the restaurant scene where Bruce can't read the menu and orders 5 bowls of soup and the extended hooker scene where he ends up in her apartment. Plus, there's the running joke of him always looking for the bathroom. |
Here's info on the Korean gift set:
YesAsia.com KoreanDVDs.com If this is the version to get (undecided), where else can it be gotten -- preferrably at a lower cost... :-) |
I ordered the HKL set about 2 months ago, but haven't gotten it yet. I can't compare.
However, I do have the Korean set. Where do I start? Yes, the Korean set has the longer cut. Yes, all the movies are dubbed over in Cantonese, but Game of Death is only in English. Yes, all the movies have DTS and yes they're quite nice. The back speakers are used well. Everything is clear and clean. The picture quality is great. No scratches or anything like that. The colours wobble, but it's only a few times and when they do it's really not that much. I'm quite happy with the video and sound quality. I'm actually surprised. On the other hand, the extras suck. There's the doc: The Man and the Legend; there's a 4-minute interview with some stars, although about 2 1/2 minutes of that interview is by Tung Wai who only speaks Cantonese and the only subs are Korean; and 11 minutes of unused footage from Game of Death. The unused stuff from Game of Death is really great, though. I like extras, so the best would probably be the HKL set, but the packaging for the Korean set is so cool, and it's also NTSC. If you wan to try to wade through the Korean websites, you can find it for less than US$50 (but I don't know how much shipping will cost). http://www.dvd.co.kr/good_view.asp?gd=S0309230013 http://www.madmad.co.kr/detail.html?dvd_id=6528 http://www.dvdkorea.co.kr/DVD_Produc...?Inx_Num=48348 If your browser can't show Korean characters, you're gonna see some mighty funny symbols. |
The HKL set also has the Japanese cut of the Game of Death footage by Artport. It runs for about 30-35 minutes. It is different from the Warrior's Journey cut and much cleaner; although they took some liberties with the dialogue. It is not anamorphic like the original Artport Japanese DVD release.

Okay, so this had to happen. I posted I didn't get the HKL set and the same day I get the thing.
I'm going away for the weekend so I can't compare anything now, but I'll do it next week, for sure. Any specific movie? |
pat00139 - :)
I would appreciate a comparison. I'm really tempted to click on the add to cart button for the Korean version. Thanks! |
so does the HKL set have a descent english audio track? unfortuneately, I don't speak cantonese. I'd wait for an american release, but bruce would probably return as one of the dawn of the dead zombies before that happens.
|
Yes, the HKL discs have both cantonese and english dubs with english subtitles.

jessebo, you know, you could always read the subs?
I'll take a look and compare the P/S quality next week when I have time, probably on Wednesday or Thursday. I'll post what I see and hear as soon as I can. |

the HKL set is region 2 pal right? I was just wondering if that 4% speedup is bad on these discs. Just wanted to know before throwing down 60+ bucks for the set. Thanks!

So, the Korean set has English sub-titles, but is not dubbed in English, only Cantonese? |
Originally posted by Truffaut Fan Correct. The English dubs on these films are truly awful anyway. |
Originally posted by mrhan None of the actors voices are even used. Bruce actually uses his voice for one of the black actors in the film. Man I gotta get this set! |
Originally posted by isamu Are you serious?! :rotfl: Man that's hilarious! Was it the black guy with the funky mustache that says "I'd like some Chinese spare ribs." ? Man I gotta get this set! |
The Cantonese dubs are just as bad; they don't even use the real actors voices. Jackie Chan uses his own voice in the English dub of Drunken Master II (someone else dubs his character in the Cantonese track) yet I don't know anyone who prefers watching that film in English. |
Has anyone had a chance to compare the picture/sound quality for the 2 sets yet?
I still can't decide which one to get... I would like to purchase the set with the best picture/sound quality. I'm leaning towards the Korean NTSC version because of the DTS sound and because I'm not to sure how my multi-region player will handle the PAL conversion. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |
R3 Spectrum vs. R2 HKL
The Korean DVD site DVDPrime has a lengthy review of the Korean Spectrum set, and in the mid-part you will find a comparison between the Korean version (the upper ones) and the UK HKL set (the lower). The Korean set, which used the new Fortune Star remaster, obviously has better resolution, contrast and color.
Link You will have to click the second of three columns right below the grades to see the whole review. |

At this point it wouldn't hurt to wait one more week and see how IVL release turns out.

Originally posted by MrPeanut At this point it wouldn't hurt to wait one more week and see how IVL release turns out. http://www.asiandvdguide.com/ The set looks cool but they should of at least added the English track to ETD. That is the only film in which Bruce uses his own voice for the character he played. I think I'll stick to my HKL set and maybe pick up the the ETD SE that's coming out in May. I recently played the last WB release and it looks horrible on my 53" 16x9. Hopefully, they remastered that as well. |
Wow there's yet another ETD SE coming out in May? Is this a region 1 release? What extras wil it have?

It's funny that no one has given the award hands down to the HKL releases of Lee's films. I had the earlier Korean boxed set of the Bruce Lee collection and the picture and sound quality all sucked.
In addition, the HKL boxed set has the special collector's edition of Way of the Dragon, which has some things the Platinum Edition doesn't but is also missing some that the latter does have. As for Game of Death, I couldn't care less about it - I got the Aussie R4 version of A Warrior's Journey and that's enough for me. |

Hmm, thanks for the link, but I think the bonuses on the HKL Legends edition make up for the inferior pic quality. Perhaps HKL will use the superior remastering one day.

Just when you all thought the ultimate version had been released, well look again ...below is the link that takes you to the recent Hong Kong box set which also includes Enter the Dragon and Game of Death 2 and all in DTS sound too.
Still awaiting reviews but I am sure it is as good as the Korean release. Link below http://global.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept...ection-videos/ |

Still awaiting reviews but I am sure it is as good as the Korean release. Link below http://global.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept...ection-videos/ I'll probably go with the KR release, unless the HK releases are much better. Since I want to get the R1 of "Enter The Dragon", and I can just get "Game of Death 2" seperately. |
Just a clarification, the HKL box set has the Platinum Edition of Game of Death (2-disk), but Way of the Dragon and the rest are one disk. The single disks HKL sells on their site is the same.
Anyway, I got the IVL set with me. It's basically the same friggin' thing as the Korean set (well, apart from the 2 extra movies). Here are the differences: All the extras on the IVL set are shoved onto the 7th disk. The trailers and slideshows are exactly the same on both sets. The 'Collector's cut' of Game of Death is the same as the unseen footage from the Korean set, roughly 11 1/2 minutes of outtakes and otherwise unused footage. The IVL set does have 3 minutes of NG shots that the Korean set doesn't have. It also has the alternate opening credits to Enter the Dragon, which are pretty much the same with the existing opening credits to Enter the Dragon. The celebrity interviews section is about twice as long on the IVL set, which has more interviews, not really longer ones. (That's not to say it's really more substantial; it's not even 10 minutes long.) It DOES have English subs if you want them, and some interviews are in Cantonese, so that's a definite improvement over the Korean set. The Korean set has the doc, which the IVL set is lacking. However, the IVL set has a 32-page booklet in Cantonese and English, while the Korean one is only in Korean. I don't know if both booklets say the same yet, so I can't tell you that. As for picture/sound, I didn't compare, but I'm guessing they're pretty much direct ports of the same source (even the menu designs on both sets are the same). However, the IVL sets offer the original Cantonese (or English) language tracks in mono on all movies (in addition to the remixes), whereas you only get the 5.1 remixes on the Korean set. Overall, what you really pay for is the 2 extra movies. When it comes to extras, the clear-cut winner is IVL, there's not even a question of competition there. For picture and sound, then it's your choice, but you get Enter the Dragon with the IVL set. If you're planning on buying the Enter the Dragon SE, then get the Korean set. Game of Death 2 is a nice movie but it's not a Bruce Lee movie. You can miss it and nothing would be lost, or, find it for a cheap price and get the Korean set. I wanted the movie because I'm a Yuen Woo-Ping completist and his clan worked on the movie. |
Is this the IVL set that you are referring to?
http://global.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept...ection-videos/ |
Yep. I mean, there's only one IVL set, so... :)
|
I picked up the IVL set..and very nice it is too....however upon removing the Way Of The Dragon disc again the other day....it now has a huge crack as it was held far too tightly (i am very careful with how i remove discs) so was wondering, as i don't want to buy the whole set again...can the individual titles be purchased separately?
|
I noticed the same thing. I'm kind of scared to remove the disk from the holder. The design of the box to hold the disk is really bad. Hong Kong really has bad designs for DVD boxes. Either too flimsy or too tight... :)
I'd guess if you really want Way of the Dragon, you'd have to buy the whole set again, or find another company's DVD. Too bad it wasn't Game of Death that broke, then you wouldn't have worry about getting a new movie. That movie's such a mistake, sometimes I want to break my DVD. :) |
