It looks like the VCD was just released this week. DDDHouse has the DVD listed as coming "on or about April." So it looks like we've got a bit of a wait.

The good news is that the Hong Kong DVD release is rumored to contain a new cut, with 20 mins of additional footage.

The mainland version is out now, although it's unclear yet whether it has English subs:

Yeah, the ones on ebay are bootlegs and are of dubious quality. They're either 'camcorder in theatre' recordings or taken from the VCD.

Has anybody ever ordered from av89.com before? I'm tempted to order it but I have never gotten anything from them before.

It APPEARS that this is the theatrical cut, not the extended version. I'm going to sit this out for a week or two and see if the rumored special edition (which is supposed to come out in a few weeks) materializes...

I got the info on the DVD from this thread:
http://pub5.ezboard.com/fhongkongdvd...art=21&stop=27

It seems the specs for it are as follows:
Chinese and English subs, DVD-5, 98 mins, DD 5.1 AC-3

So it's a DVD of the theatrical cut. A DVD-9 with a 20 minute longer cut is in the works.

both DVD and VCD are released. You can get DVD at http://store.sohu.com/, VCD will be much cheaper and you can get it as low as $1+shipping at http://www.tigercool.com.

Be aware that both DVD and VCD do NOT have English Dub/Subtitle. Better make sure you can understand (and read) Chinese before you buy... otherwise you probably have to wait.

This site here lists English subs on the DVD:
http://www.cnave.com/productdetail.php?pid=73100

As for a VCD with English subs, DDDHouse has one:
http://www.dddhouse.com/cms/dddhouse...productID=2792

If you can be patient, I'd think it'd be best to wait for the Hong Kong releases, since those will most likely have English subs for sure, and will have the longer cut of the film available.

This is the official release in China, authorized by Director Zhang Yimou.

Anamorphic 1.85:1, Mandarin DD 5.1, English subtitle.

Just because the seller says it is the official release that doesn't make it so. I'd wait until shops like DDDHouse, Coolashop and YesAsia have the dvd listed.

I doubt DDDhouse and coolashop will carry this release, since it's a Region 6 release. Yesasia may carry it, as may Pokerindustries and HKFlix.

However, due to it being Region encoded at all, I think it's safe to guess that this is an official release, since I've yet to see a boot that isn't all region.

Also, the cover matches the cover here:
http://www.av89.com/cndvd73100.html

The Ebay seller is more likely than not selling a legit version. However, it might be better to wait until a retailer you're confortable ordering from carries it.

I agree with you, ebay seller sometime put on misleading info. But I think this one is true, if you go to some asian dvd forums, you will know this is the real official release. I don't think DDDHouse will carry this DVD, since it's not region3. Yesasia.com might will, but who knows.

yes, that and this report here which confirms that the region 6 DVD is indeed the official version released by Guangdong Face Audio and Video Production Lt., and distributed by Guangzhou Audio and Video Publishing House. If you check out that link posted by Raxel above you'll see that the DVD cover matches the one posted at the Monkeypeaches website. Convincing enough for you?

...and why would bootleggers region code their DVDs anyway? Isn't the purpose of bootlegs to make it accessible to people who don't own multiregion DVD players? I'm neither supporting nor condemning bootlegs here. Merely stating their business logic.

Are those removable subs or burnt in with Chinese and English both being shown. Do you have any copies for trade or just sell.

Movie has three subtitles and they are removable, Feature only has burn-in Chinese subtitle.

Maybe they're lying when they say it's region-coded to make it appear legit?
