Here's my guess. I think the guy is selling legit discs. They're just not released legit discs. I don't think it's coincidence that his auction ends when the discs are due out. Some guy's thinking he's going to get the DVD at HK or wholesale prices and then ship them out. If the release date isn't met, he's screwed. Given all the information, that's the only thing that makes sense to me.

Yeah. I have to say I'm getting the fever, especially if there's an indefinite hold up on the longer version. Oh well, it wouldn't be the first double dip and I suppose it might be interesting to see whether the longer version is necessarily better than the shorter version. I'm so easy.

The way I justified it to myself was that I did not pay to see it in theaters so my first purchase can substitute for my foregone theater viewing, obviously since it has not been released here yet. And the second purchase of the R1 or longer cut would be like buying the DVD for the first time. Its a slippery slope, but if the longer cut is better, off I go the trade forum!

I went to my DVD place here in LA and my guy...who gets all the good stuff....told me VCD is available this week..and the DVD is coming a couple of weeks later. I dont mind waiting, because I like this store...all his DVDs are legit and he gives me a good price. Looks like mid march or so...I can wait.
While I was there..I picked up
INFERNAL AFFAIRS: SE 2 discs
LOVE ON A DIET
MY LUCKY STARS - not yet watched
FAT CHOI SPIRIT - not yet watched

What are the chances that this movie will come out in Hong Kong as a Region 0 release? Does EDKO release their DVD's region coded? I hope not, because I really want to get this title.

Edko has been known to release R3 DVDs, I own their Shiri R3.
It's not too likely a movie like HERO will get a region-free release, especially with Miramax holding US rights for the film. Crounching Tiger, Hidden Dragon got an R3 release right as it hit theatres in the states, and that DVD was re-pressed to take off the English subs/dub to prevent importing.
and, axolotls, the Mandarin audio track is the original audio track for the film.

It won't be released theatrically in the US till later this year, if Miramax doesn't change the date again, so we probably won't see a region 1 release until Spring/Summer 2004. So your best bet is the Chinese, HK, or Korean (EnterOne) release

I bought the original Crouching Tiget 'R3' disc and it was actually R0. Don't know about the second pressing.

If you had read what I had quoted, you'd have noticed I was talking about the R3 DVD of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which was not region-free, ever.
