This might be an obvious question, but is the close-captioning on your television set turned on? I played Lilo & Stitch on my CH-500 and didn't see any subtitles.

Sartana,

Actually that was the second thing I tried after checking the settings on my Cyberhome. Figured it was the player because this only happens with animated titles. She has a 20 inch Apex that we're running the player into.

Subtitle Problem

I recently bought a Cyberhome 500 and have been happy with it, except for a problem with the subtitles in Ronin. This is a big problem because it happens during translations of French conversations in the film, meaning the subtitles are not optional.

There are several times in the movie where the subtitles go by way too quick. One specific example is in Chapter 22 at the 1:18:56 mark where there is one subtitle that goes by so quick that it's impossible to read. In the scene:
Spoiler:
Vincent is asking his friend for info about Gregor and he says that he is "ex-KGB" and right after that the next line is so fast it's unreadable.
Since Ronin is a pretty popular title (and cheap too), I'm hoping that someone can confirm the problem. Oh and for the record, I was sober when I noticed the problem.

This problem has occurred for me on other DVD players and other films other than Ronin, as well as on TV shows when using closed captioning. Is Ronin subtitled, or closed-captioned? There's a difference and I find the problem most often occurs on closed-captions rather than subs. I'm not sure that it's the players fault.

Have you seen this machine yourself or are you just getting some sort of kick out of chiming in with an uninformed opinion? I agree with Tom Reagan. For 50 bucks you're getting a lot more than what you pay for. It's easy to scoff at the player because of its price, but the ones scoffing are usually the ones who paid a hell of a lot more for a different player.
I've been away so I did not see this very rude response to my "You get what you pay for" comment. First of all, you are making a bunch of assumptions and all of them are wrong.

#1. I purchased this player, so I know what I am talking about. I was forced to send it into Cyberhome because it would not play in 480p properly (severe red push, vertical lines ruining the picture). I don't have the player back yet.

So I am not "getting some sort of kick out of chiming in with an uninformed opinion" because my opinion is fully informed. You, however, were taking great pleasure in responding in a rude, offensive manner. Not good Net behavior.

#2. I owned a Malata N996 and never had any problems with it. I would still own it were my home not burglarized. If they were still sold new i would buy one in a flash.

#3. I replaced the Malata with a modded JVC XV602, a player that performs exceptionally well and even provides me with the scaling I need for my HDTV.

So next time you feel like responding, try not to make assumptions and hold your insults.

And P.S. So far the Cyberhome customer service has been quite good. They respond to my emails quickly and have not tried to be dishonest with me that I can see. If they can correct the problems we are seeing, then they will be a company to watch.

I believe I'm having the problem with subtitles. The problem occurs during scenes that are in French and are subtitled even without turning on subtites in the setup menu.

Also, yesterday I got The Sixth Sense Vista Series DVD and found that I could not turn off the subtitles in the movie with my Cyberhome. I double checked the disc in my Apex 1500 and it had no trouble playing without the subtitles.

It seems that the Cyberhome is really glitchy about subtitles, so I guess I'll have to keep my Apex player as a backup.

I had the same prob w/ Sixth Sense. You can easily turn the subtitles off while the movie is playing though. Just press the subtitle button, highlight ON on the menu, press Enter and it turns it to OFF.
