malata & 2disc Les Parapluies de Cherbourg problem!

Does anyone have this 2-dvd version from France? I bought it recently from Amazon.fr and there is no sound at all on the 1st disc (the actual movie). The 2nd disc plays fine though.

...a 2-dvd version from France?...

what "2-dvd version from France"...?...

...I own the 1-dvd version from France that came out in 1999... dvdfr only mentions that release... someone must've been asleep at the wheel, I guess...

* * * * *

...later: ahh! found it! looks like same disc as the one I have, but with a second disc added that contains the documentary on Jacques Demy...

...anyway... don't know what could be wrong with the sound on the main disc... have you tried it on another player?... not very helpful, I know... but still...

. . . . . .

For the benefit of the experts, would you please confirm that this problem is specific to the Malata player i.e. have you tried the disc in a non-Malata machine?

If not the title will need to be edited.

I would first trace your digital or analogue audio connections - try listening with different configurations: 5.1 / stereo etc. I had a similar problem with apocalypse now redux - no center channel. Then a week later, I discovered that my cat had chewed through the cable.

I've experienced no problems with the sound on this title.

Sometimes you have to change the PCM audio settings... I had to do that on my R2 France DVD of Scent of Green Papayas since the audio is MPEG, not Dolby... I'm not sure if it's the same for Umbrella's or not.

Bye the way are there SUBS on the Jacques Demy Doc by his wife, Agnes Varda???

I think the Malata 520 can't play the MPEG audio format on DVD. I'm pretty sure I read that somewhere. If you're using that model, this could explain the problem.

...ahh... yes... one tends to forget about the MPEG audio format... fortunately mostly discarded by almost everyone except the (by now) rare older French or German DVD releases...
