Review- 'Nowhere to Hide' (Korean film)
Note for DVD system setup: You have to change your DVD player to say you have a 16:9 set. If you don't do this, it will play a 1.85 film in 2.35. If you have a 16:9 set, don't watch the DVD in 16:9 (choose the setting you normally watch regular letterboxed films that aren't 16:9 enhanced).
Distributor: Spectrum
Run time: 112 min. (I noticed the Avalanche distb. on amazon says 90 min.?)
Main Cast:
Joong-Hoon Park .... Detective Woo
Sung-kee Ahn .... Chang Sungmin
Dong-Kun Jang .... Detective Kim
Ji-Woo Choi .... Juyon
Special Features :
Theatrical trailer (Widescreen)
Music video (Widescreen)
Interview (Park Joong-hoon, Ahn Sung-ki, Chang Dong-gun): in Korean, no subs
Making of film (Opening fights, 40 steps assassination, and the last showdown) : no subs
Score= 8/10
Basic Storyline: The police are hunting for the man responsible for a homicide.
I like this film a lot. Lots of funky camera angles. Great color and contrasts. Good use of scenery. Although I watched this 2 months ago, 3 scenes stick out in my mind. 1-The scene near the beginning with the murder (the rain, the leaves). 2-Scene in the middle of the movie on a playground with falling snow. 3-The final scene in the rain (railyard?). Watch the movie and let me know your thoughts.

The film starts at the point of the homicide. Comes to be known as 'The Forty Steps Murder' or something. It was one drug boss killing another. Woo and his partner Kim get to chase Chang all over the place for months trying to catch him. This is no easy task as Chang is good at disguise and evasion. Woo and Kim get information that leads them to Chang's girlfriend. They try and use her to get to Chang.
Lots of punching, kicking, bludgeoning in this movie. Some gunplay, also some knifeplay. Also shows alot of police bullying tactics by Woo. There is some humor present also.
Considerable time is spent on character development (mostly Woo). You can't help but like him.
The movie feels slow at times, but I think it coincides very well with what's going on in the movie. It's supposed to be slow at times, remember, this chase lasts months.
Highly recommended movie!
Note: Not everyone seems to enjoy this movie as much as I and a few others do.
IMDB's trailer page for Nowhere to Hide
Note: While parts of the movie are shot at night and dark, the entire movie is not this way (as the trailer might have you think).
The dvd is also a very vivid and crisp transfer. (silly grainy trailer)

-oh, I just remembered another cool scene... The rooftop scene with the hanging laundry... (have to watch for yourself).
cheers,
Gabe

Personally I thought it was a movie that was high on style but low on substance. If they had put 1/2 as much time into the plot as they must have putting together the cinematography they would have had a pretty decent flick. As it is while I'm not completely upset that I bought it, I would recommend renting/borrowing it first.

Thanks for the review -- I've been interested in seeing this, but Korean films are so expensive!
This Spectrum version must be the uncut version. The Region 1 version is edited.

Korean dvd's
It's a shame that people have to rely on importing these movies because the US DVD's are either cut or dubbed.Import DVD"s usually carry a hefty price tag that it pretty undeserved.I bought this title here in Korea for 17,000 won ($1 US=approx 1,300 won). Most Korean movies are this price with some being a little cheaper.Of course it works the other way to as we have to pay a little more for US or Hong Kong titles.
