Cynthia - your table looks sweet. :D

benjsimpson 10-31-01 10:44 PM

Brilliant work cynthia.....
Abres Los Ohos(Open Your Eyes) has just been released in the US by Artisan.Bare bones compared to the Spanish release though. This movie is mindblowing brilliant by the way...blows 'The Matrix' out of the water.
I'll add La Reine Margot(Queen Margot)to the list...Its only available in Region 2 UK and France.Delicatessen is available in France, without English subtitles unfortunately ,as is 'Whats Eating Gilbert Grape',with unremovable French subtitles!

Rorschach76 11-01-01 06:41 AM

-the show Deceiver is available in Japan as Liar
-it is also available in Canada

Shiv Shankly 11-01-01 01:23 PM

I did mean Don't Look Now. Don't know what the hell I was on when I wrote Don't Look Back. The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) is being released as a special edition in France on November 22. French title is La Splendeur des Amberson (no "s"). Here's a link:

Trigger and benjsimpson, thanks for the compliments. :)

And thanks to everyone else for the additions. I added them all except for the Hong Kong ones listed. Which region is that? And are they PAL or NTSC?

brez 11-01-01 09:52 PM

cynthia,

The Hong Kong titles I listed are either region 3 or 0 and they are all ntsc.

Josh Martin 11-01-01 10:01 PM

A few additions:

Juniper Tree, The (1990) - Japan, R2, NTSC
King Is Alive, The (2000) - Japan, R2, NTSC
One Plus One (a.k.a. Sympathy for the Devil) (1968) - Japan, R2, NTSC

Idiots, The (Idioterne) (1998) - HK, R0, NTSC - severely cut, with optional English and Chinese subtitles

Alice et Martin (a.k.a. Alice and Martin) (1998) - UK, R2, PAL
Amants Du Pont-Neuf, Les (a.k.a. The Lovers on the Bridge) (1991) - UK, R2, PAL
Canterbury Tales, The (I Racconti di Canterbury) (1972) - UK, R2, PAL
Cinema Paradiso (Director's Cut) (1988) - UK, R2, PAL
Code Unknown (Code Inconnu) (2000) - UK, R2, PAL - Coming 11/19
Cronos (1993) - UK, R0, PAL

Decameron, The (Il Decameron) (1970) - UK, R2, PAL
Faithless (Trolösa) (2000) - UK, R0, PAL - 16x9
Fanny and Alexander (Fanny och Alexander) (1982) - UK, R2, PAL - original five-hour TV version - Coming 11/26
Jubilee (1977) - UK, R2, PAL
Last Resort (2000) - UK, R2, PAL (note: although the title was originally announced with a director's commentary and some sites still list it as a feature, the actual disc has no commentary)
Rosetta (1999) - UK, R2, PAL - two-disc set with La Promesse, a 1996 feature by the same directors
Sebastiane (1976) - UK, R2, PAL (note: one shot near the beginning of the film has been electronically reframed so as to remove an erect penis, even though the film has been shown intact on British TV)
Tango Lesson, The (1997) - UK, R2, PAL

Also, note that the UK version of Idioterne has been cropped to a widescreen ratio.

Finally, Miramax is releasing The Young Girls of Rochefort in a couple of months in the U.S. (on January 15, actually).

cynthia 11-02-01 11:03 PM

Okay, let me know if I'm mistaken on any of these.

These are already available in the US:
Animal Factory
On the Border
Romance (1999)
Water Drops on Burning Rocks

These are available in the US under alternate titles:
All For Love is St. Ives
F.T.W. is The Last Ride
Lookin' Italian is Showdown

Since I'm trying to keep this list as accurate as possible, I usually look up the titles at e-tailers, and I had trouble locating some.

I looked at ALL the HK e-tailers listed in the HK Newbies thread and could only find VCD versions of these. Could you point me to an e-tailer that has them on DVD?
Celebration, The (Festen)
David Copperfield (1935)
Lighthorsemen, The
Stealing Beauty

And I couldn't find these at all at any of the HK e-tailers, if you know where I can find them, let me know:
Bambi
Grapes of Wrath, The
Jane Eyre (1944) - I found the 1996 version on DVD in HK but not 1944.
Last of the High Kings, The
Magnificent Obsession
Mrs. Miniver
Samson and Delilah

Josh Martin 11-02-01 11:17 PM

Nevermind, looks like the HK DVD of The Celebration is OOP. It's available in Germany and Denmark, but neither of those editions have English subtitles.

Also, the table mistakenly repeats the additional info for Sebastiane (regarding a reframed shot) for The Tango Lesson. I haven't seen it, but I very much doubt The Tango Lesson has any aroused male genitalia ;)

cynthia 11-02-01 11:52 PM

Thanks for the correction, Josh. :)

I also added these to the list:

UNITED KINGDOM
A-Team, The (TV)
Airwolf (TV)
Bionic Woman, The (TV)
Incredible Hulk, The (TV)
Knight Rider (TV)
Miami Vice (TV)
Secrets and Lies
Six Million Dollar Man, The (TV)
Tripods, The (TV)
Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (TV; British version)

HONG KONG
All's Well, Ends Well Too
Johnny Be Good (1988)
The Kingdom
The Kingdom II

And I removed ER from the UK list because I mistook the VHS box set I saw at blackstar.co.uk for a DVD set. That's too bad though. :(

cynthia 11-03-01 02:44 PM

I'm thinking about amending the "rules" to add the inclusion of films that are in their proper aspect ratios in another region, but not in the United States. And I'd just make a note beside it that it's in its original aspect ratio.

Would that be too confusing?

After all, having a film in its intended format is just as important as "extended versions" and "directors' cuts", if not more.

Let me know what you think.

Josh Martin 11-03-01 04:17 PM

Addition:

The Princess and the Warrior is getting a U.S. release on 1/29.

italdisc 11-05-01 02:06 AM

I've heard about Kubrick's "Fear and desire" DVD ...

I've read a few days ago that there's a dvd of Kubrick's first movie "Fear and desire" somewhere: did you hear anything about?

italdisc 11-05-01 02:16 AM

Kubrick's different lenghts on european versions

Is there anyone who knows the differences between USA and European versions of Kubrick movies? Here they are the different lenghts (from 4 to 28 minutes!!!)
Spartacus Usa 196 Eu 189
Dr.Strangelove Usa 93 Eu 90
Lolita Usa 152 Eu 147
2001 Usa 139 Eu 143
A clockwork orange Usa 137 Eu 131
Barry Lyndon Usa 184 Eu 178
Shining Usa 143 Eu 115 (!)
Full metal jacket Usa 117 Eu 112
Eyes wide shut Usa 159 Eu 153

italdisc 11-05-01 02:23 AM

Different ratio in some Hitchcock dvd...

Different ratio in some of the Universal' Hitchcock's dvd, from the USA to the European version:
In USA:
The birds Usa 1.85
Marnie 1.85
Topaz ? (but announced as "widescreen")
In Europe, all of them are full screen.

The question is: are the Usa dvd "matte"prints (and the european are "open matte", so that we have more frame to see), or the widescreen veersion contain the whole frame and the european versions are cut on the sides???

silenzio 11-05-01 02:26 AM

At least many of them have something to do with the PAL speedup (4%), so they are shorter in PAL than NTSC.

The R2 and R4 discs are pan & scan. The R1 discs have the correct aspect ratio.

Kubrick cut The Shining with almost 30 minutes for its European release.
The different running times for the other movies can be attributed to PAL speedup of 4% as Silenzio alreeady mentioned.

Jose Martinez 11-08-01 01:11 AM

Aren't the second R2/R4 re-releases of The Shining (the remastered version) the original cut?

Incidentally, I am Josh Martin; I'm posting under this vaguely similar Spanish name because some moderator on a power trip suspended/banned me on account of <A HREF="http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=156189">this.</A> Frankly I don't know why I'm still posting here (I probably won't be after I am inevitably banned again); I just appreciate what Cynthia is doing and would like to contribute.

Hello.

Great work on the list, Cynthia! The new formatting makes things even better. We all appreciate all of the time and effort you're putting into this!

The only title I don't see listed that I know about is Dogs In Space released in the UK. I haven't found a release for this version anywhere else in the world. I love this movie, but haven't picked it up because according to the comments at amazon.co.uk, the picture quality is terrible.

Oh, if you are definitely going to start listing movies that are released with proper ratio, the UK release of Purple Rain is letterboxed (16x9 enhanced), while the budget US release is fullscreen. Don't know about other countries, though...

Thanks again for the incredibly useful list.
