Hendrik, Jeeves & Wooster series 1 and 2 were released in the USA as well.
Thanks for that link for Johnny Guitar :) Did some browsing at Cinestore and found out that Hitchcock's "Mr. And Mrs Smith" was released in France a while ago. It seems that "Suspicion" is coming on 22/11 as a special edition. Unfortunately with compulsory French subs :( (just like that very nice SE of "The Magnificent Ambersons"). |
Here are a few more that haven't been mentioned yet:
From Australia... Betty Blue (3 hour director's cut!) Midnight Oil 20,000 Watt RSL (2 sided collection of videos and live performances by the greatest Australian rock band ever) Pretenders Greatest Hits From Spain (Spanish movies with English subtitles)... La Comunidad (2 disk SE, extras not subtitled) Jamón Jamón Nadie conoce a nadie Calle 54 (2 disk SE, extras not subtitled. This is coming to R1 in November) Niña de tus ojos From the UK... Gangster No. 1 Matador (crap transfer, buyer beware!) Three Colours Blue (coming Oct. 29) Three Colours White (coming Oct. 29) Three Colours Red (coming Oc. 29) |
Updated.
Along with what everyone has contributed, I added these R2/UK titles which are coming out November 5: Family Guy Season 1, E.R. Season 1, James Bond Collection (since it's on moratorium here), and Cold Feet Series 3. Does anyone know which seasons of E.R. and Beverly Hills 90210 are available in Japan? Also, Kumar J, what is the difference between the T2: Ultimate Edition available here and the T2: Ultimate Pioneer Edition in Japan? ----- I'm working on making a table similar to the ones in the Columbia House threads so it will be easier to look through and add the helpful notes and comments, such as the cumpulsory subtitles. |
...the French DVD of Hitchcock's only 'screwball' comedy Mr. and Mrs. Smith (1941) has optional French subtitles...
http://www.dvdfr.com/dvd/fiche.php3?id=2820 ...ditto for Jacques Tourneur's 1944 film noirish Experiment Perilous, which stars the very beautiful Hedy Lamarr... http://www.dvdfr.com/dvd/fiche.php3?id=2213 ...anyone for some 1930s Astaire/Rogers musicals?... http://www.dvdfr.com/dvd/fiche.php3?id=2429 http://www.dvdfr.com/dvd/fiche.php3?id=2431 http://www.dvdfr.com/dvd/fiche.php3?id=2433 . . . :o . . . |

update
I added a bunch of R4/Australia discs that I got from michaeldvd.com.au. Also removed Timecop from the R2/UK list, as it is available in the US.
Brett - thanks for contributing, but this list is limited to movies, etc. not available at all in the US. I would love to add discs that are in their correct aspect ratio, or better in some way than the US version, but this list is already long, and that would make it much, much longer. |
According to Amazon Japan, it looks like seasons 1-5 of ER are currently available.
Also available in Japan is the first season of Third Watch. In Spain, King Kong, La Fiera de Mi Nina (Bringing Up Baby) and Sospecha (Suspicion) is available. |
The Stranger (1946) is available in the US, in more than one edition, as it's a public domain title. Also, F for Fake is available in Japan. In France, The Young Girls of Rochefort (Les Demoiselles des Rochefort), and Don't Look Back (also available in Germany) are available. In the UK, Gate of Flesh is available Those are all coded as R2 titles, far as I know.

there is R2 UK disc of Orson Welles' Macbeth restored complete cut.

Updated with the latest additions. :)

Cynthia,
I think you've got a new full-time job on your hands maintaining this list! (Thanks for all the work.) (I've been deleting my posts after you've added the movies to the main list.) Here are four more I've ordered, but have not received yet: Germany (R2) Company Of Wolves (early Neil Jordan film) Mr. Bean 10th Anniversary Box Set (All the videos and some new extras) (I've read that there are also Spanish and French versions coming out as well.) Laurel & Hardy: Pack Up Your Troubles/Wrong Again/Their First Mistake Australia (R4) Cyrano de Bergerac (1990 version) (This differs SUPPOSEDLY from the Canadian and English versions in that it will be widescreen (as opposed to the others being 4:3) and will have more extras.) (Can't really tell what's what, of course, until I have it.) |
Isn't Legend of 1900 also available in Canada? It's in stock at Total Action Universe, so I'm going to be ordering it during this Free Shipping weekend.
|
"Isn't Legend of 1900 also available in Canada?
...it may well be, but it will almost certainly not be the Director's cut mentioned in my post above... is it anamorphic?... does it have a DD 5.1 soundtrack?... is the running time ~2 hours? or is it the longer ~160-minute version?... . . . :o . . . |
updated
I'll wait to see which version the Canadian Legend of 1900 boasts before I add it to the list. I couldn't find any info on it on any of the Canadian e-tailers.
I also added... All the Little Animals (R1 Canada) Basquiat (R2 Japan) Post Mortem (R1 Canada) Roswell: The Cover Up (R1 Canada) Sum of Us, The (R4 Australia; coming Oct. 23!) |
Wow cynthia!
Thanks so much for doing this list. It's something that I've been looking for for a long time. Here's my contribution: Dobermann (R2/UK) [I think there's also a SE available in France, but with no english subs :( ] Thanks again, talespinner p.s. Could I make a recommendation? Although I don't want you add to the list by taking in different versions of films available elsewhere, could you amend the list by noting which ones are P&S only? I believe Heavenly Creatures and Meet the Feebles in Canada are, for instance. If you can't, that's cool. What you've done already is plenty... p.p.s Here's a link that I had posted some months ago in a thread like this one. Didn't know if you had it: http://www.davisdvd.com/News/Regiona...ernational.htm |

Two more (John Wayne) classics from France:
Back To Bataan Flying Leathernecks |
And, again from France, some film-noir classics (starring Robert Mitchum):
The Big Steal Out Of The Past |
Biiig update with the table. If it takes too long to load or you all prefer the old list-type format, I'll switch back; I thought it might be easier to add details about the DVDs this way. Just let me know what you think.
I added Trigger Happy TV (R2/UK) I removed Sudden Death because it's available in US. Beast Wars: Transformers, Fort Apache, and Oliver and Company were moved from the Germany list to the UK list, because it appears Germany imports them from the UK. If I'm wrong, let me know. And Shiv Shankly, I couldn't find Don't Look Back. Do you know in which year it was made? If anyone has any suggestions for maintaining the list, please shoot them my way! |
Available in the UK: "Murder Rooms: The Dark Beginnings Of Sherlock Holmes"
|
"...I couldn't find Don't Look Back..."
...ahh... http://discshop.com/dvdstation/produ...pf%5Fid=500240 (anamorphic 1.85:1 / German, English mono / German English subtitles) . . . :o . . . |
Originally posted by cynthia Beast Wars: Transformers, Fort Apache, and Oliver and Company were moved from the Germany list to the UK list, because it appears Germany imports them from the UK. If I'm wrong, let me know. [/B] Fort Apache is called "Bis Zum Letzten Mann" and She Wore A Yellow Ribbon is called "Der Teuffelshauptmann" in German. Btw, nice list you've made there ;) |
Hendrik, thanks. It seems to be called Don't Look Now. I hope that's the one he was talking about. :)
hitch_fan, thanks for correcting me. I was looking up their English names at Amazon.de, and all I came up with were UK imports. If I'm also wrong about Beast Wars Transformers, somebody let me know. I thought I just looked over it, but I can't manage to find Alive on any German sites, either. |
"Don't Look Now" is also available in France as "Ne vous retournez pas." Anamorphic at 1.85:1, in English/French with removable French subs.
