I just sold my Toshiba 2108 (multi-zoned), and my solution was to press the "T" button on the remote twice, enter a time of 0:00:01 and press Play - this takes you directly to the start of the film.

Unfortunately, the best way to access and the menus on RCE discs is to buy a new player that handles RCE better - I bought the factory multi-zoned Pioneer 535.

By the way, I didn't think that any of the titles you mentioned were RCE encoded, so there is a possibility your friend's problem lies somewhere else.

regards, Tim...

How do you make the 2108 read and play multi-region DVD's?

My 2108 is labelled to play only R1 DVD's. However, I don't have any non-R1 DVD's to see if it plays non-R1 DVD's.

Thanks for any help.

Dave

Dave, you must either buy the player with the modification already in place, or take it to a dealer who can do the modification for you. I would say that in your case, the player will probably only play R1 discs.

Here in Australia, modified players are more the rule than the exception, and most dealers sell players already modified. Note that these modifications in most cases are not performed by the manufacturer, but rather are 3rd party modifications.

In the case of the Pioneer 535, it seems that the modification is actually done by Pioneer themselves - this has the added benefit of your warranty not being voided by changing the player (as would be the case with any 3rd party modifications).

regards, Tim...

it may be a possibilty that the 2108 needs a firmware upgrade.

One extremely important step was left out of the routine above for playing RCE discs on the SD2108. Do the following and you cannot go wrong:

1. Place the DVD in the player and have your finger ready over the STOP button on the remote.

2. As soon as the L..O..A..D.. etc ends and the chapter number display appears in the display panel on the player - press STOP (this is VERY IMPORTANT). It is also important that you do this quickly, before it has a chance to get to the RCE map.

3. Now press "T" twice and enter 0:00:01 and press PLAY

4. the film will start.

Good luck!!

I just found this hack for an SD-2109 that apparently over-rides the region checking... My 2109 came modded so I couldn't check it... This model and other DVD Player hacks can be found at http://www.vcdhelp.com

Hacks to play Region 2, 4 and 1

Put DVD into player - wait for regional code violation screen to appear. Once this happens press the M (Memory) button on your remote control. Then press 1 for Title 1 and press Play on the remote. This will over-ride the regional code violation detection menu and you can watch the movie etc by entering the fwd on the remote control and change chapters etc by using the T (Title/Chapter) button on the remote control)

I have successfully played R2, R4 and R1 DVDs even those with RCE.

This was from a NZ contributor so whether it works here in AUS or the US where most of you guys are I don't know....

But its worth a try!
