An economical way to get an external hard drive is to assemble your own.
Buy an internal HD that is on sale or cheap after MIR, and order a HD enclosure. It's really easy to assemble it - just open up the enclosure with a screwdriver, plug in the HD and secure it with the supplied screws, and close up the enclosure. Done!
CompUSA has a Western Digital 160GB internal HD for $30 after MIR this week.
Then find a cheap enclosure at pricewatch.com.

My cheap enclosure burned up a perfectly good HDD when the little fan quit working in less than a year. I have since purchased an all aluminum external HDD that needs no fan and expect it to last much longer. Based on my experience you get what you pay for in the long run.

Yup. Get an all aluminum enclosure. Some of them even have a fan too.
For the bridge chipset, get an enclosure with Cypress for USB and Oxford 911 for Firewire. They are very popular.
