Yeah, that's why I was sent the link for the booklet in English. I look forward to getting my copy next week.

My set arrived today. I found this message amusing, as I was looking through the special features of disc 1.

It’s a feature, not a bug!

Re: Godzilla Minus One 4K UHD

It's stupid is what it is. They could put English subs on both versions of the movie, but too lazy to put them on the extras. That is just dumb.

Re: Godzilla Minus One 4K UHD

A Japanese studio deciding to not bother translating and applying subs to special features is not lazy. Do you think people in Japan have access to all movies from America in full subtitles for extras on discs? We're greedy for expecting it.

I was disappointed but not particularly upset that the extras weren't subtitled. (In all honesty, I probably wouldn't have watched them even if they were subtitled, and I've certainly imported many, many hours' worth of unlocalized Kamen Rider UHD discs, undeterred by their lack of English options.) Presenting the lack of subtitles as "we're doing this for authenticity; you're welcome!" is laughable, though. If Toho is pitching the lack of subtitles as a good thing, why subtitle the movie?

I think it's fair to criticize an outrageously popular film that grossed massive sums of money in English language countries that costs beaucoup bucks for a lavish special edition, yet skips out on subtitled extras. I've bought significantly less expensive titles from boutique labels with hours of subtitled extras; even obscurities like Zebraman 2: Attack on Zebra City, which is also a Japanese production. I can't offhand think of a comparable example.

Noonan 09-18-24 12:42 PM

Re: Godzilla Minus One 4K UHD

I agree that how it's worded is silly. Almost as if it's a joke. But I don't agree with an expectation that TOHO would do something because other studios have in the past. In 2024, how many people do you think even watch extras, let alone buy a disc rather than streaming? We on this site are the vast minority in that area.

Re: Godzilla Minus One 4K UHD

That “authentic Japanese experience” disclaimer is amusing but also a little galling, especially when the film itself has subs and clearly subs were created (and were possibly pre-existing?) for whatever extras have been ported over to the U.S. editions. But to openly sell it as some kind of “authentic experience” feels like a disingenuous preemptive strike against any potential complaints, and also a reminder that if you want the “inauthentic American experience” well, buy it twice. An “authentic experience” for the Japanese is understanding what’s being said in the supplements. For me to have that, I too would need to comprehend what’s being said in them and not just assume I’m getting the gist of it. Ergo, subtitles. Of course, it was obvious this title would get released in other regions with at least some of the bonus features included, and subtitled, which made it an easy pass despite a fancy box. But man, that onscreen disclaimer is kind of a slap.

Also, while not everyone watches extras nowadays, subbed or otherwise, clearly enough people do – and enough collectors do – that every single boutique label we know and love and rave about on this forum still produces them in substantial quantities as value-adds to the super-duper special editions many folks (including some here) absolutely must have on day one at full price. These companies are well aware that physical media buyers are a minority these days, but they also know that we often spend top dollar on their releases or go overboard (as I do) in their sales, and they respond in kind with more of the same. There are something like four hours (I think?) of extras on the Japanese MINUS ZERO set, so Toho clearly still sees the value in them (as they often have on disc releases of their big films over there). They evidently bet that not subtitling them wouldn’t impact sales of the box to overseas buyers, and it appears they were right.

Having imported a few Japanese “subbed movie + unsubbed extras” discs over the decades (right back to the LD days), I’ve long known that unsubtitled supplements on their native releases were the norm, but I’ve also seen many Japanese discs of Hollywood movies that absolutely do include Japanese subtitles on the bonus features, so their domestic buyers can have an “authentic American experience.” (the Marvel/Disney 4K/3D discs being good examples; I have to switch them off on each supplement as I go through them). The fact that they did subtitle the extras on the U.S. edition of MINUS ONE makes the Japanese box look just a wee bit cash-grabby, but in today’s physical media marketplace, I can’t say I entirely blame them. There’s an audience out there for everything, especially if having it first is important.

" I consider watching a Godzilla movie in Japanese with English subtitles an "authentic Japanese Experience" not watching extras with no subtitles. That's pointless to the any fans in the English speaking world.

Ugh.. the UK set is nice but it’s a lot. Why can’t the US just get a deluxe version like other regions? I might just keep my Amazon order and also get the Japanese release from Godzilla.com.

But is that bonus disc region locked. Not an issue for me since I have a multi region player, but not everyone does and it's worth considering before purchasing.

Cancelled my pre-order with Amazon and ordered the Japanese set from the Godzilla website. They had a promo going today for Godzilla Day which was for free shipping plus I was able to stack a 15% off my first order promo code. Came to $55.25.

The Digital version of Godzilla minus one is $5.99 on Vudu(Fandango) and they have the Black and White version on sale as well. I might buy the Minus Color version at that price and then get the standard 4k US Disc.

Re: Godzilla Minus One 4K UHD

Sooo . . . a commentary now, but none of the earlier special features? Gee, I wonder what new, couldn’t-be-released-the-first-time enticement will be on the twenty-seventh edition of this movie to get people to buy it all over again? This set but actually with two Blu-rays the way it’s described there? Unsubtitled video version of the commentary so we can see them talking? New sleeve? Another steelbook? Godzilla stickers?

I just got the U.S. Blu-ray fairly cheap. That’ll do until Toho stops this re-release gouging and releases an ‘all-in’ edition, presumably about ten years down the road.

Mike86 12-02-24 09:20 PM

Re: Godzilla Minus One 4K UHD

The first Japanese box set is enough for me. Kind of annoying that they couldn’t have been bothered to at least subtitle the extra features but it is a nice looking set at least.
