I will only purchase physical media if it has extras. Pretty good ones at that. I may not watch them all, but I like to know they are there for when I have more time to delve. I would almost never buy physical for just the movie with no extras..

Depends on the movie. After seeing Civil War, I watched some interviews with the director.

I used to listen to commentaries at work back when I was in an office, and I liked the ones that had the cast, probably drunk, riffing on the film.

I agree that learning too much from behind the scenes can sometimes take you out of the movie, like the bigatures stuff in LOTR. I really can't watch the opening Gandalf-Frodo scenes without noticing the tricks.

Re: Bonus material - Waste of time or do you like knowing more about the movie?

Do I WATCH them? Hell yes, I watch literally EVERYTHING on my discs (including the FBI warnings) at least one time no matter what. Do I CARE about them? That's another story. In the laserdisc days commentaries were a great bonus as they gave you about an entire movie's worth of new info. Nowadays a lot of extras are done just for the sake of doing them, even if there isn't a lot to say. Lots of them are just the people involved talking about how great their movie is, in some cases that it's the greatest movie ever made. Lots of commentaries are recorded even before the movie opens in theaters, so that doesn't give them a chance to react to how well or how badly it did there.

I used to buy almost every movie that had a commentary track if it was cheap enough, I've long stopped doing that as the past hundred or so I've listened to were just forgettable. I'd never not buy a movie I liked if it were released with no extras also, while they're nice to have sometimes they just aren't available. I'd never buy a bad movie just for the extras now either, they'd have to be something really special to do that.

I agree that most of the time I'd rather spend the time watching a new movie I haven't seen before than watching extras for one movie, I always thought it was excessive when the extras ran as long as or sometimes even longer than the movie itself. They were neat when they were a new thing, but we've pretty much seen how most types of visual effects work or what have you.

The first hunger games movie has an excellent feature length making-of documentary that is as good as if not better than the movie itself. Very inspirational. The best bonus features make you want to watch the movie again.

The only time I didn’t watch all of the bonus materials was when I was rebuilding my collection from 2016-2020 or so. Bought about 1500 films during that time. Now that I’m more or less caught up to everything I want to own I only buy about 10 films or sets a year and I watch all of the bonus materials from them.

I only watch the bonus features. I haven't seen an actual movie in over twenty years.

I'm sort of a point where I really only care about bonus material when it's from something I'm really into like Star Trek, LOTR, Alien, stuff like that.

And even then, a lot of the bonus material isn't terribly interesting and it's just EPK-style fluff that hypes the movie, actors, and/or director, and doesn't really get into the nuts and bolts production of the films, criticism, or reveal anything negative.

I do like well put together behind the scenes stuff, preferably 30+ minutes. Even then, it's going to have to be movies that I really like. I don't really have it in me to watch multiple 5 minute scenes. I don't care at all about blooper reels, EPK nonsense, or most interviews. While I used to watch a lot of commentaries, I don't think I've done that in 10+ years.

Re: Bonus material - Waste of time or do you like knowing more about the movie?

If a movie has good features I'll usually watch a few of them each time I watch the movie.

Mission Impossible works well because the extras are split into bite sized chunks so there isn't a feeling that one doesn't have time to sit through a 90 minute documentary all at once. The feature about the stunt where Cruise was on the outside of the plane was interesting, as it showed how they did it. However, even a good feature like that one spends a lot of time extoling how amazing Cruise and everyone was to pull it off.

Avatar, and perhaps anything Cameron, has good content. It comes across as a genuine interest in sharing how the movie was made.

Commentaries are rare for me because of the time factor if nothing else. I did recently re-watch the original Star Trek films and for a couple of the duller films (3 and 5) I listened to the alternate historian type tracks and they were pretty interesting. I can see doing that again when watching a series. Watch some of the movies as is and alternate with a commentary, and then switch it up the next time.

I love bonus features! But having the time to watch them is incredibly rare anymore. It’s been a long time since I’ve sat down and pored through a Blu-ray/DVD’s supplemental material.

Even with very little time to watch bonus material, if I had a choice to buy a movie-only version or a version packed with extra features, I’m buying the packed version every time.

The only exceptions I make are if it's a particular favorite movie, or a title otherwise of some interest being released by a boutique label with a good track record for creating substantive content.

I'm more inclined to read a good booklet essay than listen to a commentary or watch a bunch of featurettes.
Spoken like a true reviewer, lol. Forced to endure every hacky featurette and two-bit commentary for every random indie movie grows incredibly tedious at some point. There are bits of gold in mounds and mounds of garbage but you never know going in which one it will be.

I do not watch behind-the-scenes stuff anymore. I use to enjoy it, but realized some of the material ruined the movie magic. Sometimes, I don’t want to know how the scenes were created.

However, if it’s a movie based on a true story, maybe I’ll watch documentary stuff about the real story.

For me, it really depends on what the special features are. I don't typically listen to commentary tracks, most of them are boring as shit to me. I like to watch Gag/Blooper Reels, sometimes making of's are kind of interesting, depending on the movie. Sometimes interviews with cast/crew are kind of interesting, again depending on the movie. I don't make a habit of watching special features, only when they spark enough interest.

Re: Bonus material - Waste of time or do you like knowing more about the movie?

Back in the early days when I was watching movies on disc, after the movie was over I ensured that I went through all the extras (with the exception of audio commentary).
As time went on I was finding it to be more of a chore. Then I was selective of which extras I would watch - only watching stuff that looked interesting.
Eventually I just stopped watching extras altogether - I just don't care anymore. Time is limited - I'd rather just watch another movie or do something else than sit and watch extras.

Re: Bonus material - Waste of time or do you like knowing more about the movie?

Give me a solid hour or less documentary and I am good. Not fluff but a true documentary showing warts and all similar to what is on the Universal Hitchcock film releases.

I have enjoyed many commentaries over the years, but they are too few and far between to truly get a good one.

I don't watch much else. If it is fluff, you can keep it. And blooper reels just aren't funny anymore. Guess I have seen too many of them by this point.

I do enjoy seeing deleted, extended or alternative scenes if they bring something of interest to the table. But most of those included are ones that you quickly understand why they were cut.

Bonus material is actually the only reason I’m here.

Wasn’t much of a movie fan until DVDs, and the bonus content is what drew me in.
