When will the Blu-ray disc era end?
I just want to know to be prepared. i'm just not ready to give up my 3D, but when will the days of Blu-rays be finalized and put to bed?

Re: When will the Blu-ray disc era end?
they are still selling DVDs so I don't think it's a huge concern to have.

Re: When will the Blu-ray disc era end?
Be prepared for what?
|
Re: When will the Blu-ray disc era end?
To give up my 3D capability and move on to UHD. Figured that was clear in op.
|
Re: When will the Blu-ray disc era end?
I think UHD will continue to be a supplement to Blu-ray and is in no danger of replacing it. When Blu-ray's dead, UHD will probably be dead too.

Re: When will the Blu-ray disc era end?
Dead dead? 15 years. Right now it’s a slow trickle of releases.
|
Re: When will the Blu-ray disc era end?
When the hardcore collectors stop buying 4Kbluray discs.
|
Re: When will the Blu-ray disc era end?
Hypothetically, a vote of "no confidence" by the hardcore collectors is the day when the big movie companies are not replacing newly purchased defective bluray/4Kbluray discs.

Re: When will the Blu-ray disc era end?
But could they find new life if people get sick of subscribing to multiple streamers to watch movies and you can own a movie and not pay a monthly fee?
|
Re: When will the Blu-ray disc era end?
Dead like VHS dead? Likely 7-10 years. You might still get a few novelty releases but the studios will likely attempt to phase out physical media at some point. The studios wouldn't mind eliminating their home video divisions.

Re: When will the Blu-ray disc era end?
I think it depends on a few factors.
I think there will be a collector's market for decades. There are people out there who have a collector's mindset who want to own movies in nice editions. As such, expect catalog releases from the major studios to eventually dry up and shift over to boutique labels like Shout, Scream, Criterion, Arrow, etc. I wouldn't be surprised at all to even see new release major studio films shift over to this model eventually. As I said, I think that market, though small, will exist for a long time, BUT I think the biggest question is how long the big studios will indulge it. Look at a studio like Disney. They have been pumping out MCU and Star Wars content to their Disney+ platform for about three years and they still haven't released any of onto disc. I think we'll soon hit a point where even their new releases become Disney+ exclusives with no disc releases. Streaming exclusivity and getting people to pay a recurring monthly fee for access to content seems to be the endgame here for at least some of the streamers. Paramount+ still allows their new Star Trek series to get disc releases, and, likewise, Warners still puts their DC series like Doom Patrol and Peacemaker onto disc, so we're not completely there yet. |

Re: When will the Blu-ray disc era end?
I’m not saying I’ll stop watching Blus, but no matter what, unless 4K tv makers add 3D, my 200 or so are useless. 4K players can play Blus but none, including TVs have the 3D capability. Frankly, I love my 3D. And yes, tv will go shortly, but I could find a used 3D somewhere, but if I upgrade, I’m losing ability.

Re: When will the Blu-ray disc era end?
It’s possible that PSVR2 will have 3D support like its predecessor, but nothing’s been confirmed or denied on that front yet. So that may be an option if your current TV dies.

Re: When will the Blu-ray disc era end?
...or get a Virtual Reality headset.
edit: as Adam already mentioned with the Psvr 2 |
Re: When will the Blu-ray disc era end?
Ten minutes before Disney announces True Lies and The Abyss on BD and UHD.

Re: When will the Blu-ray disc era end?
Yeah, 3D home viewing is almost dead, but Blu-rays will still be around for awhile yet. As Josh-da-man mentioned, I could see boutique labels being the last step for physical releases, I'd imagine that many studios would rather shut down their home video divisions and just be happy with some good up-front money plus percent of the sales from boutique labels and let them do all the work.

Re: When will the Blu-ray disc era end?
I held out with my 3D plasma for too long. It was stupid. I can and do watch 4k content daily. The same couldn’t be said for 3D. Two years ago I moved my plasma to my bedroom and upgraded to a Sony UHD. Now if I get the urge to watch something in 3D I go to a different room. I didn’t have to throw all my discs in a wood chipper.

Re: When will the Blu-ray disc era end?
I think my LG TV was from the last year it was still making 3D sets. It's also 4k, so I'm content for now. When that TV dies, it will probably force me to finish off my plans for a projector setup.

Re: When will the Blu-ray disc era end?
It depends on what you mean by "end" - I mean there are still plenty of DVDs still being made. So by that standard, more than 10 years are left. As for when it will be just a niche - I think five years, if it's not already there.
