Star Trek Films in 4K
Since this is now announced and talked about in the UHD announcements thread, I think this is worthy of its own thread and discussion.

So apparently The Digital Bits is reporting that the Star Trek 4K sets are being split into this first set with two more sets to follow.
The next will contain The Final Frontier, The Undiscovered Country, and Generations. The third set would have First Contact, Insurrection, and Nemesis. Also good news in regards to Star Trek: The Motion Picture. https://www.startrek.com/news/direct...VWsH3U5RDERiU4 |
Re: Star Trek Films in 4K
Debated starting a separate thread. I personally don’t love the way Paramount is dividing these up into three sets and would prefer they just be split between TOS and TNG. Regardless though I’ll probably buy all the sets eventually. Also love the news about the director’s cut of Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Re: Star Trek Films in 4K
Yeah, the breakup of the movies is stupid at best. But the TMP news is spectacular. Although I do want to know what’s being done about the remaster of the other movies as well.
|
Re: Star Trek Films in 4K
I like the artwork they went with. Although it’s a bit weird to have Kirk and Spock in their uniforms from TMP and then McCoy next to them in his II-VI uniform.

That said, ultimately it doesn't matter a single lick. |
Re: Star Trek Films in 4K
I’ve had the 2 disc DVD special editions plus the blue and white box sets of all ten original movies, never bothered with the Blu-ray versions since they didn’t review well (except the solo release of Wrath of Khan on Blu).
I may spring for these and let go of some of the older ones. And the news about the DC of TMP is the best news of all. Paramount really sat on that for too long, though maybe now the price of doing the FX is cheaper now. The only thing that could make this better is if the Special Longer Version got a remaster. I’d settle for a widescreen SD version even. |
Re: Star Trek Films in 4K
Added artwork of the inside cases. Similar to how the Mission Impossible set is boxed.
|
Re: Star Trek Films in 4K
I wonder if Paramount will price this around the same as the Indiana Jones 4-Movie Collection. I would kind of assume so since this will be comprised of four movies as well.
|
Re: Star Trek Films in 4K
Day 1 purchase of the first two sets. Doubt i’ll pick up the 3rd unless i can find it for under $20. Recently rewatched Insurrection and Nemesis for the first time since the theaters and i’m good for life on those.
|
Re: Star Trek Films in 4K
For the sake of clarity, my understanding is that the directors cut of TMP will NOT be included in this box set. Instead it will be released to Paramount plus some time next year. Have I got that right?

Re: Star Trek Films in 4K
They said it’s got an exclusive launch on Paramount+. So I wonder if they intend to do an individual release of it eventually. It wouldn’t surprise me as they like to milk us Trek fans.
|
Re: Star Trek Films in 4K
Yeah, I'd bet you two slips of gold pressed latinum the Director's Version will get a separate release.
And we'll buy it :) |
Re: Star Trek Films in 4K
*raises hand*
Uh, aren't there *six* Star Trek TOS movies? Back in the day, they used to include the duds (though Star Trek VI is an excellent movie) with the good movies in a box set and leave it to the customers to decide. If Halloween 5 can get a 4K release so can Star Trek V. |

Re: Star Trek Films in 4K
I would have been all over this set like Kirk on an Orion if it were all six films. Instead I am going to pass and just wait for the standalone release of the TMP Director's Cut. I already have Wrath Of Khan Director's Cut on BD and the I have never been bothered by the DNR of the other films like others have.
|
Re: Star Trek Films in 4K
That is a strange way to split up the movies.
They should have either done one six-movie set with the TOS films and a second set with the four TNG movies, or three sets of TOS 1-3, TOS 4-6, and TNG 1-4. I guess they wanted to keep the "trilogy" of 2-3-4 in the same set. |
Re: Star Trek Films in 4K
Odd price, but it’s up for pre-order on Amazon for $70.48. I have a $30 gift card to burn, so I’ll apply it to that. And I don’t know if the release date is an error, but it says Sept, 21.

Re: Star Trek Films in 4K
Actually that price isn’t too bad, but I’ll likely wait for it to drop a bit.

Guess maybe I should have jumped on pre-ordering last night. Oh well, as much as I want to upgrade the films I don’t need them day one.

Re: Star Trek Films in 4K
It's Paramount, -the price will drop at one point or another. That's why I haven't pulled the trigger on the Indiana Jones set.

The remastered version of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home is returning to theaters for a 2 night event in August for it's 35th anniversary. I actually saw this in theaters back in 1986 as a 13 year old. I might consider seeing it when the time comes. If you're even remotely interested, you can enter your zip code and see if it's coming to your city. |
Re: Star Trek Films in 4K
Three places near me, I wonder if the wife feels safe enough to go to a theater. This would be amazing to show my 14 yo on the big screen.

Re: Star Trek Films in 4K
I would like to see a release of TMP that has all three cuts of the movie on a single disc, like the Close Encounters of the Third Kind blu-ray, with each version selectable via seamless branching, and the ability to view the exclusive/unique scenes marked.
I'm not terribly excited about these sets; I already own all of these movies on DVD (the ten-movie boxed set of the 2-disc SEs) and blu-ray (the TOS and TNG slipcases). Maybe if the price drops down to nothing I might bite. I'm really a point where I'm tired of rebuying things just because there's a slightly better version out. |

Well, do you own a 4K TV and 4K UHD Blu-Ray player? If not, then there's really no point to even consider this. I think how this set is being divided up is stupid and is a pure Star Trek whore money grab. But, it's for 4K fans who want to watch these utilizing their 4K TV's full capabilities.
There are a few movies I will upgrade to 4K, like 2001 A Space Odyssey, first six Star Wars films (I do have Solo in 4K because I bought the Target limited edition), Lord of the Rings, Alien/Aliens, but there are a lot a marginal releases like the old Star Trek movies that I won't bother with unless they're dirt cheap. And other stuff, like the James Bond movies or any number of old horror movies I already own on blu-ray, I'll probably never upgrade. And while I love movies like Terminator and Robocop, the blu-rays look good enough to my eyes. I'm not sure having the dodgy special effects be even clearer will increase my enjoyment of them. I will, however, get a 4K version of a movie when it's the same price as or cheaper than the blu-ray edition, like my Black Friday purchases of Blade Runner 2049 and Deadpool 2 on 4K. BR2049 on 4K was the same price as the blu-ray, so I went ahead and got those. I probably would have favored 4K for BR2049 anyway, but I wouldn't have bothered with DP2 in 4K. Actually, I think I picked up DP2 on 4K because I couldn't find the DP2 blu-ray with the second disc of supplements or something. |

I really don't see a huge improvement from blu-ray to 4K, particularly with older movies like these. Maybe some better grain structure. And I don't think HDR adds much to movies that weren't made with it mind.

For me I’m only buying 4K releases of films I either really like or movies I haven’t owned but want to. Definitely being more selective now than in the past.

Re: Star Trek Films in 4K
Well, tomorrow is the last day for the 35th anniversary screenings of Star Trek IV. It was showing on Thursday and tomorrow. It's playing at 2 theaters near me, so I decided to purchase a ticket. Yes I could easily watch this at home. I own all the movies on BD, but I thought it would be fun to re-visit this on the big screen 35 years later. The movie also includes a featurette on the cast and crew remembering this 3 movie arc. ST II though IV. I'm looking forward to seeing how the remastered version looks.

I would have gone to the 35th Anniversary screening of The Voyage Home, but the closest theater to me that’s playing it is three hours away.

Just got back from seeing Star Trek IV. So good seeing it on the big screen 35 years later. So the feature they played before the movie was actually on the DVD about the Trek 3 movie arc. So it wasn’t unique to this presentation. The interviews were old including Harve Bennett, who has already passed away and I just checked my BD and that feature is on the BD. After it was done they showed a short promo about the new 4K set coming in September. Anyhow, not much to say other than it’s still a damn good film and holds up well now. I didn’t notice any glaring improvements with the picture. |

Hot diggity damn. That better get a disc release.

Damn that looks fantastic.

Re: Star Trek Films in 4K
I bought 1-10 for $20 on iTunes last year, and it looks like the first 4 have already upgraded to 4K. Plus, I have the Wrath of Khan director's cut in UHD on VUDU. Since I kept the two disc DVDs for all ten movies that is probably enough for me. That having been said a reissue of the director's edition of the first movie would be tempting in a way nothing else really is.

Re: Star Trek Films in 4K
So iTunes is selling the Star Trek 10 movie bundle for $35. Star Trek I-IV are in 4K. They were upgraded recently after Paramount released the new 4 movie 4K disc set.
This is a really good deal, so I decided to go with this. So whenever future movies come out in 4K, I'm sure the rest of the bundle will be upgraded as well. Saves me the shelf space. |
