Star Trek Films in 4K

Since this is now announced and talked about in the UHD announcements thread, I think this is worthy of its own thread and discussion.

So apparently The Digital Bits is reporting that the Star Trek 4K sets are being split into this first set with two more sets to follow.

The next will contain The Final Frontier, The Undiscovered Country, and Generations. The third set would have First Contact, Insurrection, and Nemesis.

Also good news in regards to Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Debated starting a separate thread. I personally don’t love the way Paramount is dividing these up into three sets and would prefer they just be split between TOS and TNG. Regardless though I’ll probably buy all the sets eventually. Also love the news about the director’s cut of Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Yeah, the breakup of the movies is stupid at best. But the TMP news is spectacular. Although I do want to know what’s being done about the remaster of the other movies as well.

I like the artwork they went with. Although it’s a bit weird to have Kirk and Spock in their uniforms from TMP and then McCoy next to them in his II-VI uniform.

That kind of stuff drives me crazy. I feel the same about the Sturzan Star Wars SE posters everyone goes gaga over.

That said, ultimately it doesn't matter a single lick.

Re: Star Trek Films in 4K

I’ve had the 2 disc DVD special editions plus the blue and white box sets of all ten original movies, never bothered with the Blu-ray versions since they didn’t review well (except the solo release of Wrath of Khan on Blu).

I may spring for these and let go of some of the older ones.

And the news about the DC of TMP is the best news of all. Paramount really sat on that for too long, though maybe now the price of doing the FX is cheaper now.

The only thing that could make this better is if the Special Longer Version got a remaster. I’d settle for a widescreen SD version even.

Added artwork of the inside cases. Similar to how the Mission Impossible set is boxed.

Re: Star Trek Films in 4K

I wonder if Paramount will price this around the same as the Indiana Jones 4-Movie Collection. I would kind of assume so since this will be comprised of four movies as well.

Day 1 purchase of the first two sets. Doubt i’ll pick up the 3rd unless i can find it for under $20. Recently rewatched Insurrection and Nemesis for the first time since the theaters and i’m good for life on those.

For the sake of clarity, my understanding is that the directors cut of TMP will NOT be included in this box set. Instead it will be released to Paramount plus some time next year. Have I got that right?

yes as the press release mentioned it’s being worked on for the next six to eight months.

They said it’s got an exclusive launch on Paramount+. So I wonder if they intend to do an individual release of it eventually. It wouldn’t surprise me as they like to milk us Trek fans.

Yeah, I'd bet you two slips of gold pressed latinum the Director's Version will get a separate release.

And we'll buy it :)

*raises hand*

Uh, aren't there *six* Star Trek TOS movies? Back in the day, they used to include the duds (though Star Trek VI is an excellent movie) with the good movies in a box set and leave it to the customers to decide. If Halloween 5 can get a 4K release so can Star Trek V.

Yeah, like I mentioned earlier Paramount is doing these weird. There’s going to be three different sets.

Set 1:
The Motion Picture
The Wrath of Khan
The Search For Spock
The Voyage Home

Set 2:
The Final Frontier
The Undiscovered Country
Generations

Set 3:
First Contact
Insurrection
Nemesis

Re: Star Trek Films in 4K

I would have been all over this set like Kirk on an Orion if it were all six films. Instead I am going to pass and just wait for the standalone release of the TMP Director's Cut. I already have Wrath Of Khan Director's Cut on BD and the I have never been bothered by the DNR of the other films like others have.

Re: Star Trek Films in 4K

That is a strange way to split up the movies.

They should have either done one six-movie set with the TOS films and a second set with the four TNG movies, or three sets of TOS 1-3, TOS 4-6, and TNG 1-4.

I guess they wanted to keep the "trilogy" of 2-3-4 in the same set.

Odd price, but it’s up for pre-order on Amazon for $70.48. I have a $30 gift card to burn, so I’ll apply it to that. And I don’t know if the release date is an error, but it says Sept, 21.

Re: Star Trek Films in 4K

Actually that price isn’t too bad, but I’ll likely wait for it to drop a bit.

It's up to $107.99 today.

Guess maybe I should have jumped on pre-ordering last night. Oh well, as much as I want to upgrade the films I don’t need them day one.

Re: Star Trek Films in 4K

It's Paramount, -the price will drop at one point or another. That's why I haven't pulled the trigger on the Indiana Jones set.

The remastered version of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home is returning to theaters for a 2 night event in August for it's 35th anniversary.

I actually saw this in theaters back in 1986 as a 13 year old. I might consider seeing it when the time comes.

If you're even remotely interested, you can enter your zip code and see if it's coming to your city.

Three places near me, I wonder if the wife feels safe enough to go to a theater. This would be amazing to show my 14 yo on the big screen.

Re: Star Trek Films in 4K

I would like to see a release of TMP that has all three cuts of the movie on a single disc, like the Close Encounters of the Third Kind blu-ray, with each version selectable via seamless branching, and the ability to view the exclusive/unique scenes marked.

I'm not terribly excited about these sets; I already own all of these movies on DVD (the ten-movie boxed set of the 2-disc SEs) and blu-ray (the TOS and TNG slipcases). Maybe if the price drops down to nothing I might bite. I'm really a point where I'm tired of rebuying things just because there's a slightly better version out.
