Hopefully so. I've always had a soft spot for this one, since my brother and I got to be extras in the "Boiler Room" scene.

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

James Flower posted on criterionforum.org that the next ShawScope set isn’t coming until next year.

Q. Sorry for going a bit off-topic, James(*), but are we going to see Shawscope Vol 3 this year, or is it happening next year instead? The Bruce Lee set must have taken a lot of time and resources for this year, so I figure Vol 3 might not happen in 2023.

A. Definitely next year. One massive HK set per year is all we can manage!
Fingers crossed for Super Inframan (if Shout doesn’t get to it first).

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

So that unexpectedly neat airing on FX several years back of an alternate cut of Blackhat will finally see the light of day on home video, cool.

I have a soft spot for this film, having seen the alternate FX Channel cut once, and the theatrical cut of this film. I would be down to watch it a third time, as I liked the cast and what few action scenes it has are pretty well staged set-pieces.

I forget where I read this on-line (maybe an AV Club article?), but I guess Michael Mann was recently a bit down on this film given that it gets a lot of shade thrown at it. However, he said that what is in the film is all technically accurate. Fair enough, but I would hope that the FBI or whatever, would not use such a simple to turn-off method (by going into an Android phones settings and simply toggling location services to off, lol) for tracking a person of interest.

Anyway, I have no problem admitting I enjoyed this film and if it was priced right and had some nice extras I would strongly think about picking up a copy when Arrow has a sale going on. Even EPK type interviews with the main cast would be fine as extras.

With the new Bruce Lee box set only the 4k disks are region free? I live in North America, will I be missing out on any content on the locked region Blu Rays that are included in this set?

The Universal 4K of Carlito's Way is fine for me. The Arrow 4K wasn't even done by Fidelity in Motion, so no sale.

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I'd like to get the complete Bruce Lee set, not the individuals. But want to wait until there is a decent sale. The initial price is just too much for something that's been released so many times over the years even if it is 4K now. And I already own so many copies.

I did see one of the sets is apparently sold out. I think it's the Arrow exclusive limited artwork.

Amazon Amazon

The Shaw Scope Volume 2 set has dropped to $89.45

Lowest price for the set. I foolishly paid $129.99 for Volume 1. I think I'm going to bite on this price.

Edit: Order placed. That was the price range I was hoping for. The set has been out almost a year. I doubt it goes any lower. No more shopping. I have a trip to Japan to plan for now and need to save my money.

Geez, what a month!

The Warriors in UHD, a Child’s Play UHD collection (that’s significantly more affordable than the individual Scream Factory releases), a third Spaghetti western collection that includes a much-anticipated Fulci film, and The Day of the Locust. This’ll be the first time in a while where I plan on picking up everything on the slate.

Apparently, that Child's Play set will not include a UHD of the original film, it will just include the previously-released UK Blu-ray. Something to do with the rights.

Sort of like the Bruce Lee box set that just came out and had the blu ray version of Enter the Dragon.

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I watched the 36th chamber of Shaolin last night off the new Shaw Scope set (Volume 2) that I got. Amazing new transfer. The movie feels fresh. Now I plan to check out the interviews and documentaries on it. And I watch these old Shaw Brothers movies in the English dub because it brings me back to the days when I was a kid watching Kung Fu Theater on weekends. I don't care for the Mandarin or Cantonese tracks because they didn't even record live audio back then.

Even for House of Traps? I swear that the dubbing for that one was done by High School Stoners.
There was another one that I saw (Forget the name) but Ti Lung sounded like he was dubbed by (An extra gruffy) Nick Nolte.

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I sample the English dubs on all of these, for amusement, but I can rarely get through a whole feature that way. And I spent a lot of time watching Kung Fu Theater via a Detroit TV station as a kid. Of course, I recall the vast majority of films on there not being quality Shaw Brothers titles like what's in these boxes, but more often the cheaper-to-package-for-syndication period kung-fu films that proliferated from Hong Kong and (especially) Taiwan in the 70's, all dubbed in the usual slapdash manner. To think how much nuance and subtlety, even for these films, was being left out back then. At least now, the subtitle tracks for these Arrow editions are such improvements that you can listen to the English dub if that's your permanent mode, but still get a fuller understanding of what they're actually saying via the subs. Leaving those off really does a disservice to the films. The Celestial/IVL DVD subs were likewise a decent improvement in their time, mainly because prior to that you might get, at best, horrible burned-in subs that were carelessly created in Hong Kong when the films were first released, and which were equally as bad as the dub tracks at oversimplifying plots and dialogue. Personally, I still prefer Cantonese or Mandarin (whichever is appropriate to how the films original screened domestically), because the mouths DO generally match regardless of the films being shot without live sound, but it's good that all the options are there now, even on western editions of later HK movies (Shout, VS, Eureka, 88, etc). Reconciling these kinds of things was long overdue.
