I disagree. It was a total homage to Sam Raimi and the Evil Dead movies, but on acid. I'm glad we're finally getting a decent release after 20 years.

I haven't seen it in 20 years, but I remember I didn't care for it for pretty much these reasons. And I believe Battle Royale came out around the same time which I loved. So I think it was the whole "it wants to be the next Battle Royale" kind of mindset. I may check it out again, but I'll skip on this release.

I'm excited about Versus!

I still have the Tokyo Shock DVD that I bought after a close friend of mine showed me the film many years ago.

I never picked up the Ultimate Versus DVD Steelbook that was released, so I'm glad that cut of the film is being included.

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

The news that Arrow Video launched its own streaming service in the US this month seems to have flown under the radar. I hadn't even heard about it until yesterday, and I regularly listen to the Arrow podcast!

https://www.slashfilm.com/arrow-streaming-service/

The app appears to be available on Roku, but it has only a very perfunctory description ("Home of Cult Movies") and the tile doesn't use the familiar Arrow logo.

Has anyone tried it out? What I'm most curious to find out is whether content on the service is stable or if it rotates in and out regularly. Is 4K video too much to hope for? What about 5.1 audio?

It sounds like the content is mostly horror focused. That Slashfilm article I linked says that the entire Gamera series that recently sold out on Blu-ray is available to stream.

Based on the normal-sized Herschel Gordon Lewis Feast box that's now available with just the 7 blu-rays from those massive boxes (at a fairly reasonable price from some of the 'Shocktober' partners) it seems pretty likely they'll do the same thing with a streamlined Gamera box down the road, as I believe they've already hinted they'd do on social media somewhere. I got the big Lewis box, but I'm considering selling it and grabbing the regular version instead. Might end up doing the same with the Gamera box once I've gone through it all. That big comic book compilation is such a waste of space.

I'm really only interested in the Gamera trilogy from the '90s. I used to have those in a Blu-ray set from Mill Creek (or maybe it was Echo Bridge, I don't remember), but the quality was crap.

The older, kid-friendly Gamera movies are of much less interest to me.

Still, for those so inclined, the newer, smaller Lewis box collects together the individual Blu-ray releases that were released after the gigantic ‘Feast’ boxes. I’m (admittedly) assuming that Arrow will release single- or double-disc versions (or perhaps a triple feature of the phenomenal 90’s films?) of the Gamera films before once again collecting them into a small slipcover. If they do, that might be a good way to just get the 90’s trilogy plus the abundance of quality supplements. I also bought those Mill Creek discs at the time, and they were indeed rather average, which was a shame.

Looks like another winner. Presentation alone makes up for my somewhat not like as much as other Smith movies, but a/v sounds amazing and 3 cuts. Going to check extended myself. Should get early week...

The TC will always be the preferred version. I like the Extended cut as an experiment but since some of the scenes and jokes run a bit longer, they can lose the comedic effect by over explaining shit. The TC is tight.

Huh. See I’ve only seen TE and didn’t love it first time all way through. I have seen bits and pieces now and then since and it’s fun, but I know need to give another chance. Nothing will beat Clerks and Chasing Amy imo. Even really liked Jersey Girl.

There's a reason it's an extended cut and not a director's cut. The extended is worth a watch as a curiosity, but I really doubt there's anyone that would prefer that version.

Is Southland Tales HD only, or are they doing 4K?

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I got that jumbo ltd edition of Oldboy from the UK. I haven't done the side-by-side to see if they've added anything to this 4K. I'll probably wait for the reviews before I make a decision.

I missed my shot at the Rec box set at the Shout! sale, and I don't want to pay 60+ for it. And then there's the fact that it's Arrow, and I know they'll do a better job with it. Obviously it'll never happen, but I'd love to have seen "Quarantine" included on the {Rec} as an extra.

Thanks! I may still go for it.
I got to see a 35mm print a few years ago, but I've never watched the Cannes cut.

Because a different label has the distribution rights for this region.
