Powerhouse Indicator releases

Didn't see a thread related to this company's releases, only a few threads devoted to specific titles and/or particular boxed sets, so hopefully this won't step on anyone's toes, but I think their releases are worthy of discovery and discussion under their own banner, especially considering how many are region-free.

That said, today's newsletter has some welcome news for Budd Boetticher fans, also region-free:

The titles duplicate Sony's old OOP Films of Budd Boetticher DVD collection (most of which are now only available via Mill Creek's budget packs). The extras easily rival the earlier edition, although no mention of whether Indicator will port over the U.S. commentaries, intros or the "A Man Can Do That" documentary. Hopefully their "AND MORE TBC" will offer some surprises down the road.

FIVE TALL TALES: BUDD BOETTICHER & RANDOLPH SCOTT AT COLUMBIA, 1957-1960

THE TALL T (1957)
DECISION AT SUNDOWN (1957)
BUCHANAN RIDES ALONE (1958)
RIDE LONESOME (1959)
COMANCHE STATION (1960)

Release date: 21 May 2018
Limited Blu-ray Edition (Blu-ray premieres)
£42.99

Five classic, iconic and slyly subversive westerns collected on Blu-ray for the very first time. Containing a selection of new and archival extras – including interviews with director Budd Boetticher and an appreciation by film critic Kim Newman – this collectable five-disc box set also contains an 80-page book with newly commissioned essays, archival interviews and full credits, and is strictly limited to 6,000 units.

INDICATOR LIMITED BLU-RAY EDITION SPECIAL FEATURES:
• 2K restoration of Ride Lonesome
• HD restorations of The Tall T, Decision at Sundown, Buchanan Rides Alone and Comanche Station
• Original mono audio
• The John Player Lecture with Budd Boetticher (1969): archival audio interview conducted by Horizons West author Jim Kitses at the National Film Theatre, London
• The Guardian Interview with Budd Boetticher (1994): an extensive filmed interview conducted by film historian David Meeker at the National Film Theatre, London

• Kim Newman on the Ranown Cycle (2018): an appreciation and analysis by the critic and author of Wild West Movies

Re: Powerhouse Indicator releases

I've seen their stuff advertised on Amazon.co.uk, though I've never bought anything from the label.

Re: Powerhouse Indicator releases

Awesome if this is region free. I'd like to get their Charley Varrick BD but seems to be region locked.

Re: Powerhouse Indicator releases

The Sony titles from Indicator are Region Free. The Universal's, or at least the first few batches IIRC, had to be locked.

I love Indicator. They are a superlative label up there with the best of the best, if not "The" best.

I already have Commanche Station via a German Bd, but if this set ends up being discounted to the usual £42.99 on Amazon.uk, I'll waste no time in ordering it. ALL of these are great films and have a breezy re-watchability factor IMO.

Re: Powerhouse Indicator releases

Their Hammer Volume 1 and Volume 2 sets are phenomenal. Both are region free (anything to do with Sony?) and miles ahead of how the films were treated in the U.S. (where they're essentially Mill Creek filler now).

Vol. 1:
Amazon Amazon

Vol. 2:
Amazon Amazon

I do hope that they eventually have a large enough catalog that an occasional sale might be feasible.

The only Indicator sets given much discussion hereabouts are the three Harryhausen boxes, but the company seems to be on track for a good long run, fingers crossed.

Re: Powerhouse Indicator releases

I have Ghosts of Mars and Anderson Tapes so far and will pick up Eyes of Laura Mars in the near future. From the two I have, they are right up there with Twilight Time and Criterion in release quality. I really wanted Blue Collar but that's one of the locked ones unfortunately.

Re: Powerhouse Indicator releases

Another interesting region-free boxed set, with five world Blu-ray premieres, and two previously available from Twilight Time. This repeats the extras from those two discs and throws in a few more:

This seven-film Blu-ray box set brings together Fuller’s entire output as a writer and director for Columbia Pictures: IT HAPPENED IN HOLLYWOOD (1937), a witty satire on the movie-making business, co-written by Fuller; ADVENTURE IN SAHARA (1938), a gripping thriller based on a Fuller story; POWER OF THE PRESS (1943), a daring drama about a corrupt newspaper publisher, based on a Fuller story; SHOCKPROOF (1949), a brooding film noir written by Fuller and directed by the great Douglas Sirk; SCANDAL SHEET, a tense drama about a compromised newspaper editor, based on Fuller’s acclaimed novel The Dark Page; THE CRIMSON KIMONO (1959), Fuller’s frank and unsentimental detective thriller which attacked the prejudice, ignorance and bigotry that Fuller saw all around him; and UNDERWORLD U.S.A. (1961), Fuller’s unflinching depiction of the brutal world of organised crime. This collectable four-disc box set also contains an array of new and archival extra features, limited edition booklets with newly commissioned essays, archival material, contemporary reviews, and full film credits, and is strictly limited to 6,000 numbered units.

Re: Powerhouse Indicator releases

Not familiar enough with the Fuller films to put in an order just yet, But I pounced on the other two as soon as they went up.

I already have the German Blu for China Syndrome and I don't think the PQ/AQ will differ all that much- but it's a favorite film and the double dip will be worth it for the extras and booklet.

Been wanting to see Modern Romance again for a while now. Always expected it would get a Mill Creek or TT release here. Much happier to be getting it from Indicator.

Re: Powerhouse Indicator releases

In his latest Cinesavant column, Glenn Erickson noted that Indicator quietly announced a special edition of THESE ARE THE DAMNED for later this year. Can't find much info beyond that mention, but that should be a must-have.

Re: Powerhouse Indicator releases

It's speculated it will be part of another Hammer box, this one Sci-Fi orientated (w/ some Quatermass probably)

I've been able to cut back on a much of my DVD/Bd buying compared to years past.
The exception has been importing (which sucks as the Dollar is currently weak). Indicator titles seem to be part of every order I make now.

And Curse of The Demon still hasn't been announced yet.

Columbia doesn't have any of the Quatermass films. Columbia Hammer's not released include Devil Ship Pirates, Stranglers of Bombay, Terror of the Tongs. Pirates of Blood River was released by Twilight Time.

Be nice to get a set of Matt Helm films and Sam Katzman set.

Re: Powerhouse Indicator releases

I knew the didn't have the first and "...& The Pit", but I thought they might have had some of in betweens.

Hmmm.

Maybe it'll get tossed in another thriller set with Scream Of Fear and Two Faces Of Dr Jekyll ?

Then again, maybe it's just a solo release padded out with some nice extras as Savant mentions.

Hmmm.
There were only 3. Quatermass 2 is controlled by whoever has Abominable Snowman of Himilayas and X - The Unknown.
None of the three have a UK BD release but would probably end up on Studio Canal, region locked.

Re: Powerhouse Indicator releases

Forgot to mention in the previous post that Powerhouse's email blast contained a "coming soon" tease at the bottom featuring a photo of William H. Macy from David Mamet's OLEANNA. Savvy timing with this one, given that both the film and the play are probably more relevant today than they were back in the 1990's.

Re: Powerhouse Indicator releases

^ very entertaining set of films. Still available to pre-order at Amazon UK (£37.49 + shipping).

Will have to pass on the Hammer set for now.

I like Granger and Simmons, so I'm interested in Footsteps... which I haven't seen before, but that will have to wait a while too.

If we're already up to July, then I guess whatever I already have on order at AmUK is going to be it for the summer for me. Good thing too as I really need to cut back.

Re: Powerhouse Indicator releases

So stoked for NotD/CotD! It's been a long time in coming. Never would have expected it to take 12 years since the format's introduction. Looks like it should be worth the wait though.

Re: Powerhouse Indicator releases

Some of my absolute favorite old horror titles there! I hate to pay more than $10 a film, but I’m in. And actually, if you count each cut as a separate film, there are 11 films included in that bundle....

Re: Powerhouse Indicator releases

Apparently Powerhouse has upped the print run on their NIGHT OF THE DEMON set to 10,000 copies (from 6000) based on the response to pre-orders. Rather impressive in this day and age.
