Re: BLACK PANTHER: 4K Ultra HD / Blu-ray

There is a dedicated 3D thread, but I know I find it helpful when there's a thread dedicated to one title and you can find information on all the various releases and exclusives. It seems silly to just separate the 3D versions from a thread like that.

Ok but if you don't pre-order the Best Buy exclusive now it will be sold out.

I agree, although I don't think that line has really been crossed in this particular thread.

Not very many, honestly. Most Blu-ray releases are good about maintaining OAR.

or even 1.85:1 cropped to 16x9.
The difference between 1.85:1 and 16:9 is 21 pixels at the top and bottom of the frame (in 1080p). It's a negligible variance, far below the tolerances for theatrical projection. And it's almost never the result of cropping, but rather opening the mattes. This is not something worth nit-picking.

Yeah, it's a small handful. I have a few (The AU release of A Lonely Place to Die comes to mind).

21 * 2 * 1920 = 80,640 pixels!

80,640 extra pixels! NO THANKS!

I kid. My use of the word "annoying" was a bit much, sure. I rarely, if ever, even notice the 1.85:1 and 16:9 difference. I was just pointing out that having the wrong AR on a disc isn't completely gone, even if it's barely a noticeable problem anymore. Just poking at Alan a bit.

There are people out there (I know a few of them) who are hardline 1.85:1 purists and continually complain when 1.85:1 movies are opened up to 1.78:1 (which is a blanket policy at some studios, including Warner Bros. and Paramount).

Even more ridiculous are those who harp about the difference between 2.35:1 and 2.40:1 (8 pixels each on the top and bottom!).

Robert Harris has a recent thread about this on Home Theater Forum, where he points out how extremely imprecise theatrical projection is when it comes to cropping the edges of frames in order to get an image on the screen.

Does anyone know if the Target book is a hardcover thing like the Logan and Alien: Covenant exclusives? Or is it more of an included booklet?

Re: BLACK PANTHER: 4K Ultra HD / Blu-ray

I decided to pass on the Best Buy steelbook, after tax it's over $38, too much for one movie. I went ahead and purchased it on the Disney Movie Club to finish off my required purchases there, plus I went ahead and picked up the blu-rays of Mighty Joe Young (1998) and Freaky Friday (2003) for $12.48 each with their current sale.

Cinematic Universe Edition?

Isn't it part of that regardless of the release?

Thor Ragnarok was labeled the same.

Re: BLACK PANTHER: 4K Ultra HD / Blu-ray

I was hoping the shift in sales on Thor Ragnarok to UK 3D would have changed Disney's mind about about Marvel 3D releases but I guess not. Just put in my order for Black Panther 3D & Infinity War 3D at Amazon UK.

Edit: Posted before I saw all the 3D bitching & moaning in this thread. I say have the 3D come with the 4k, strengthen both formats, we are getting too fragmented on optical media. I still see people buying DVD for things that have BR&4K releases, the horror!

Re: BLACK PANTHER: 4K Ultra HD / Blu-ray

Screw it.

My current projector just has too much trouble with crosstalk/ghosting. Normally I would still get the 3D version even if I had to make do with the 2D disc for several years- but this doesn't get released in the Uk until 6/11. By the time it shows up here it's going to be close to the end of June- unless it gets lost and then who knows when it'll come in.

I still haven't seen it yet and am more eager than ever after IW. I'm just going to resign myself to double dipping on some of these after I upgrade my PJ in a few years.

The one bright spot to that is, by that time these will all be marked down in price (the first Avengers is under £10 now)

Target it is ...for now.

Re: BLACK PANTHER: 4K Ultra HD / Blu-ray

Most of the time I would rather have the 3D version too, but besides Dr. Strange, I haven't been impressed with any of the 3D Marvel movies (and I have all the US releases). I'll stick with the 4K steelbooks.

My favorite is the nerds that complain about 2.40:1 vs 2.35:1.

Looks like Amazon is having another pissing match with Disney on this title. Only a few days from release and it’s still not available for pre-order.

Re: BLACK PANTHER: 4K Ultra HD / Blu-ray

Did they even get over the last one? I just assume it's a continuation of the same issues we've had recently with Coco and Thor.

A shame, i'll just grab it from Target or Best Buy instead.

Re: BLACK PANTHER: 4K Ultra HD / Blu-ray

I thought so. I managed to get a copy of the 4K of Thor: Ragnarok from them when it released. Took a couple weeks for them to deliver it though.

It's kinda crazy that the movie is still in the top 10 box office, yet it's coming out on blu ray in a few days. It looks like it's going to break $700 million domestic.
