Picked up a copy at one of Target Stores closest to where I teach at around Noon.

Only saw about 12 copies on display. 8 in the New Release Area in the Media Section and 4 copies crammed into a display way too small for this size packaging.

Not really, there are about 4 trailers that aired before the show. Nothing that would add any value to the package though.

I consider the packaging a huge extra though. I'll probably never watch the discs since I have access to it on 4k on Netflix. But the packaging & price were just too cool to pass up. I would not have even considered this in standard packaging or if it were even $5 more. This is how you sell physical media in 2017.

Lionsgate producers that show. I think this is 100% Netflix but I知 not positive.

While the packaging is cool, I'm not paying $25 for an over-priced shelf decoration.

I've already seen the entire season on Netflix and without any added value content, it's pointless to buy it in physical form. I would never open it or watch it.

I mean the only people who would even buy this are collectors and some of the very few who don't have Netflix.

Yup! I think the big difference is that Lionsgate also distributes that show as well, while Netflix is the sole Distributor of Stranger Things.

I would tend to doubt this would be on sale for Black Friday since it's a store exclusive.

I wouldn't be surprised if, once it was determined that they've sold all they're going to, these go on clearance next spring or summer.

Exactly. Thought it was pretty obvious from the beginning that this wouldn't include a digital copy. I also wasn't expecting any extras.

I think they will could be long gone by then short of the occasional returned copy. We'll know in a week or two because I think any interest there is will be long gone by then. If there are some left I could see them being part of a BF sale just to get rid of them.

Is Strange Things some sort of merchandise phenomenon or just Netflix trying to make it be? I see a ton of merchandise all over the place but I don't really see that many people buying it.

I imagine this set will be apart of Targets BF ad....probably $14.99 or something.

There's no shortage of these at all. Dropped by Target and I counted 45 on the shelf in electronics plus a bunch more in front. It doesn't look like even one moved. I wound up passing because with it being $25 and no extras it didn't feel that worth it. I'll see if it goes on sale at some point. I have to say in person the packaging didn't overly impress me either. It's cool but not sure if it's worth rushing to buy just for that. The Funko figures actually tempted me more than the Blu-ray set.

It's a pretty popular Netflix series but I'm not sure it's this juggernaut of merchandise like I'd suddenly being pushed. Season two will be available soon which is probably why we're seeing a bunch of merchandise. Personally I enjoyed the show but I do think it's a tad overrated in all honesty.

Stranger Things is basically The Goonies meets Silent Hill.

Target probably paid Netflix a bunch for the rights to sell all this stuff.

My kid has a shirt. It's the kind of thing you'll find at Hot Topic for a few months.

I don't know, but they're certainly trying to make it happen. There's a ton of money with little risk to be made for intellectual property owners.

As far as Stranger Things goes, I don't think it will turn out to be the merchandizing juggernaut that Netflix is hoping for. Aside from the 80s nostalgia trip, there's not a lot of interesting design work there.

The design work is what I see really pushing interest in genre properties. Ralph McQuarrie's Star Wars aesthtetic. The Harry Potter world. Giger's Alien designs. Star Trek, like Star Wars, also has a distinct look, though it seems to have burned itself out in the 90s.

But with Stranger Things I think there's a fairly low upper limit to the number of "Justice for Barb" coffee mugs and ABCDEFG HIJKLMOPQ RSTUVWXYZ sweaters they can move.

I saw these at Toysrus. I've seen zero advertising for anything related to Stranger Things.

McFarlane makes a couple, also.

While somewhat crudely made they are strangely accurate.

Disc 1 of this has un-skippable, un-fast-forwardable trailers at the startup, one for Stranger Things 2 and another for Defenders. It痴 maybe the worst decision ever made. When a certain character shows up almost immediately in the season 2 trailer it spoils a large part of season 1.

That said, I discovered a workaround: you can enter Disc 2 (which has no forced trailers) and select episodes 1-4, when you swap discs you値l bypass the trailers. Still kinda annoying but it works.

An unskippable trailer that spoils the exact disc you plan to watch? I have no idea what Netflix was thinking.

My Target had 30 of these yesterday.

Yeah, not rare and will be a Black Friday special.

There's still plenty at my local Target but they're messed up now because they decided to put that lame security device that pinches all the sides.

Target does dumb things like that. $25 ... spider wrap and destroy the packaging. Next to it will be a random box set that costs $100 with nothing on it at all!

Not that I doubted it but putting in disc 2 first to avoid trailers totally worked.
