That's what I will be doing - mainly with the speaker set-up. I'd only need the two extra speakers and they're like $78 on Amazon.

For what it's worth, there's more to Atmos than just the height channels. The 5.x/7.x end of the equation benefits as well.

In my current setup, I've been using the same front mains, surrounds, center, and sub I've had since 2004 or so, I added four height speakers (Axiom M3s, since everything else I'm using is from Axiom), and I'm using a Marantz SR6012 AVR. I effectively had to choose between 5.1.4 and 7.1.2 with that AVR (there are workarounds, but...nah), and I opted for the former. We wired for 7.2.6 when building our house, so we have the option to expand once there are less stratospherically expensive AVRs that support that many channels.
