Re: Phantasm Blu-ray Release (2016)

I shot some Phantasm Reunion footage for Don at a convention like 7 years ago. I'm hoping some of that appears in the extras. It will be my first* real claim to fame if it does.

* I did appear in the extras of the Isle of the Damned UK DVD, but who's even heard of THAT movie.

I actually remember standing at the DIVX display in a local Circuit City. Funny how both of these two things died out.

Your Dreams Will Come True. TOMORROW.
Word going around is Phantasm 5 in Sept. My dream is a box set of all the films though lol.

Re: Phantasm Blu-ray Release (2016)

You wait years for a movie about flying, brain-drilling silver balls to appear on the big screen — and then two come along virtually at once. EW can exclusively reveal that distributors Well Go USA Entertainment has acquired the North American rights to director Don Coscarell’s Phantasm horror franchise, including the recently-completed Phantasm: Ravager. The company has announced theatrical releases for both that movie, which is the fifth and supposedly final film in the series, and a new version of 1979’s franchise-inaugurating Phantasm, now retitled Phantasm: Remastered.

Phantasm: Remastered will screen in cinemas on Sept. 24 as part of the first Art House Theater Day. Phantasm: Ravager will be released in theaters and via digital HD on Oct. 7. Phantasm: Remastered and HD restorations of both 1994’s Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead and 1994’s Phantasm IV: Oblivion will also be released on cable and digital platforms that day (although plans aren’t finalized, EW has been told 1988’s Phantasm II will be available to view, as well). Later in the year, the films will be released individually on Blu-ray and DVD as well as in a collector’s edition set.

How in the fuck did Well Go score this??

I wonder if a box set is still in the cards? It says "collector's edition set" but that could also just be a grand set for the first film or some set featuring 1 and 5.

My guess, Well Go has done well selling discs in both Wal-mart and Best Buy, unlike Shout or Arrow. It does sound like we are getting a complete set.

Since Well Go will release this, , the bright side will be that these blu rays should be cheap!

Yea, my Well Go titles usually look pristine, but most are new foreign releases. I believe they will most likely do a good job.

Re: Phantasm Blu-ray Release (2016)

If that complete set comes to fruition, it makes me very happy that I've held off purchasing the Phantasm 2 Blu-ray.

But that's great news that things are finally starting to move along for these films.

I'm intrigued with the Rights situation with Phantasm II. It doesn't appear that Shout Factory's edition is OOP and as far as I know Universal still had the Rights. Does this mean that Universal will also lease the film to Well Go?

Shout/Universal made a deal with Anchor Bay on the Halloween set so anything is possible. At the end of the day money is money after all.

Even if Phantasm 2 is considered "in print", that doesn't mean they are necessarily making any more. I noticed Shout tends to run smaller batches in case titles don't sell well. That is why they recently started running more expensive limited editions on their site. We also don't know what deal they had with Universal. It may not have been a "time" deal but perhaps they were just allowed to run a set amount of copies. I know Twilight Time has similar deals with Sony.

Re: Phantasm Blu-ray Release (2016)

I have Phantasm I-IV on DVD (1,3,4 from AB; 2 from SF).

I'll pick up V on DVD to complete the set, but I don't feel the need to rebuy this series on blu-ray unless I can pick up a complete series dirt cheap, say a boxed set of all five for under $20.

Stuff like this doesn't excite me like it did ten or fifteen years ago.

Pretty sure Universal owns Phantasm II outright.

I'm glad this is coming out and will definitely pick it up but, yea, I just don't get excited for this stuff anymore.

It actually doesn't sound like they messed with it too terribly much.

"We also improved a few VFX shots that always bothered me, but were also careful not to overdo it. We didn’t want to lose the film’s charm. Also, we didn’t want to remove too much grain, except in the scenes where we were working with damaged negative."

I wonder if the pre-remastered version will be on the blu-ray as well.

Re: Phantasm Blu-ray Release (2016)

Thanks for the heads-up. Just pre-ordered on amazon.ca for $27.71 CDN.

With any luck it'll drop between now and the release date.

Pre-ordered from Amazon. It would be nice if the price dropped (and I bet it will) but this is DAY ONE for me!!!
