Re: is there a "worth the upgrade" site?

The only instance I can think of where the DVD's are better are in the few instances where there is an extended cut on DVD which is superior to the theatrical version. Of course there are some where only an inferior extended cut is available BR and the theatrical was better. Obviously "better" is subjective. I prefer the extended cut of Pearl Harbor and Tombstone yet the BR are the theatrical only. Hollow Man is extended and I preferred the shorter cut of the DVD.

I bought The Warriors(1979) when it first was released. After that didn't pay any attention. Had no idea the original version had been discontinued and replaced with a re-imagined comic book type cut on dvd. Picked up the BD for $5 in Wal-Mart bargain bin. That's when I found out about the redone version. That is one dvd I kept.

Instead they just throw a lot of extra crap in there so that there's something to spread across the various channels. I think in the case of Terminator there was also some revisionism at hand with Cameron not being happy with the quality of the original track, although I could be wrong about that.

In the case of The Terminator, the original PCM mono track from the laserdisc is pretty easy to find online synced to the current BD. I know hanshotfirst doesn't like to go that route, but it really is pretty awesome and probably of a higher quality than any studio release would be.
Actually, now that you mention it I recall the gunshots sounding completely different on the Blu-ray, which is especially noticeable in the nightclub shoot-out.

Yes to the original question, and it has been running for eight years. If all you care about is picture quality, checking the PQ Tiers is essential when you want a quick idea of what a Blu-ray looks like.

Pretty much anything in Tiers 0 through Tier 2 is worth the PQ upgrade to Blu-ray. The proposition gets much dicier below Tier 2. Some of that is poor source material but there you have it.

Shit. There's a better chance of getting the original colors than the Mono.

I don't know wtf the DVD has but I'm fine w/ just streaming it on Netflix. Cuz Hill is an asshole for thinking it's better this way. And somehow he has pull for this to happen? Fuck that.

He may not, whoever is the rights-holder for the movie might've just given Netflix a different master.

Paramount released the original unaltered version on dvd. At some point Paramount let Hill re-edit and change the movie. The dvd of the original version was discontinued and replaced with dvd of altered version. When released on BD the altered version was used.
The original unaltered version has a 2000 copyright date on cover. Has insert like used to get in early days.

Appears the change over took place in 2005. Can still get original version on Amazon from marketplace. New ones start at $40, used around .50.

I've found the opposite, ever since I got my plasma, I'm finding some DVDs to be outright eyesore.

I guess it won't be "original" mono but it will give you the same effect.
I only have the speakers in my TV anyway, so that's not the issue. The issue is...

Cameron allegedly wanted to do a stereo mix from the start, but the film was too low-budget. I think that he'd already done a stereo remix for the early VHS releases.

I just don't have a strong computer, so finding it, then getting and then putting it on a disc would be a pain. But I'm not saying no ....

PS: PM? Please ?

Same with the infamous remixes for Leone's spaghetti Westerns. Sometimes, the alleged "mono" is actually a downmix of the remix! This kind of baffles me. What's the point of putting the "mono" on there at all? Are they contractually obligated to use the remix or something ?

The color issues not withstanding, there's really no excuse for the mono or the omission of any original audio tracks. Are they not on the film negative/IP/print when you scan it digitally in the first place?!
