New Third Man 4k at Cannes - theatrical release and blu-rays to follow

Studio Canal put out the following press release yesterday. I know many were hoping that Criterion would someday re-release their blu, but it looks like we might get something even better. I think France is the only country with a confirmed blu-ray release at this point, but I'd be surprised if the UK didn't get one as well. The big if is whether Studio Canal will bother to release something in the US. At the very least the US is getting a limited theatrical run.

THE THIRD MAN has been selected for Cannes Classics and will be screened in new restored 4K version.

To celebrate Orson Welles’s 100th birthday in 2015, STUDIOCANAL restored in (or “into”) 4k the film that features his most renowned role.

Starring Joseph Cotton, Alida Valli, Trevor Howard, the restored version of Carol Reed’s masterpiece has been selected for Cannes Classics 2015.

THE THIRD MAN underwent a 4K restoration (based on a 4K scan) handled by the Deluxe laboratory in the UK on behalf of STUDIOCANAL. After a rigorous comparison of different available elements, the 4k scan was done from a fine grain master positive struck from the original negative. Release prints were used as a reference for the grade. After bringing home the Golden Palm in 1949, the film is returning to Cannes in 2015 to be part of the Cannes Classics selection.

Set in 1949, Holly Martins, an American writer of westerns, arrives in post-war Vienna to visit his old friend Harry Lime. Upon his arrival, he learns that his friend has been killed in a street accident. When he meets Calloway, chief of the British Military Police in Vienna, he is informed that Harry was in fact active in the black market and wanted by the police. He decides to prove Harry’s innocence, but is Harry really dead?

STUDIOCANAL will release the film in theaters on June 26th in the UK and in the US, July 8th in France, and during the summer in Germany. New DVD and Blu-ray editions will also be released following the film’s theatrical run.

So now the questions is, will Criterion pick this up, or will someone else get it this time? Sell those Criterion blu's now folks, before those OOP prices start dropping.

I'd definitely like to check this out on the big screen.

Not just yet, you don't know if this'll retain the extras.

I'll never get to see this in 35mm, so I hope this 4K one will come to my neck of the woods!

I don't trust Studio Canal w/ another BD yet. Considering the CC BD beat their BD here, beat it in every cateogry. BUT if CC goes for TTM again and gets it? I'm unloading the BD, mate. Making my sale on this, yeah.

The features are actually really fucking good too. Almost worth it just for those alone. And I actually blind bought the thing too cuz I had never seen it but had somewhat wanted to see it. And then the OOP news came out, bought that bitch on sale.

I dragged my feet on the Criterion BD until it was too late so I'm interested in a new release. Great film.

I feel like I have seen this on the big screen, but it might have been a college movie night so not a great presentation.

Re: New Third Man 4k at Cannes - theatrical release and blu-rays to follow

I can't imagine any Studio Canal BD will match the Criterion extras, but there are dvd copies of the Criterion that can be had for a fraction of the cost of the BD if they're that important.

I realize there's skepticism surrounding Studio Canal's ability to improve on the video quality of the Criterion, but SC has done good work in the past. And since any new BD released by them would replace the current release, one would assume that they would be sure to make the upgrade worth it to people who may be double dipping. Obviously we can all name a dozen examples where that wasn't the case, but I'd be pretty surprised if this new restoration wasn't an improvement over the Criterion.

Feature wise, they might lose. Cuz... it's CC. Tech wise... it'd be a really big damn shame they fuck it up. Cuz CC had it come out in 2008.

I'm curious to read reviews of the restoration and PQ since Studio Canal did a hideous job with the 4K restoration of 'Children of Paradise'

I do have the Criterion DVD so it'd just be the film for me.

I don't think Studio Canal had anything to do with Children of Paradise.

Does the Criterion Blu have different special features than the Criterion DVD (rerelease)? I bought the DVD several years ago but never got around to buying the now OOP Blu. If the features are the same I'll just upgrade to this new Blu for the audio/video quality and keep the old Criterion DVD for the extras.

It's nice to have but I don't NEED the extra features to be in HD.

Eh, I'm keeping my blu Criterion (still sealed). Not sure why as I have an extra criterion copy to watch but whatever. One of my favorites.

Ugh. To sell or not to sell. That is....

It's a great release with impressive extras and I love the artwork. But at these prices, I could just sell and keep my UK SteelBook until the new transfer hits....

Correct, it is no sure thing this possible Studio Canal disc will surpass the Criterion BD. Their track record is very spotty even with 4K transfers.

The Third Man would be one film with its dense shadow structure that could get messed up very easily even with people that know what they are doing.

If the new release turns out to be subpar, it'll probably drive the prices of the old Criterion discs even higher.

I'm not selling my CC BD, no sir!

I'm just throwing it directly in the trash. Take that, capitalism! Also, environmentalists!

Something, something, something Pol Pot.

(I'm still not sure how to play that game)

In more relevant news, Amazon UK has a listing for 2 upcoming releases. There's a single disc BD and limited edition 4 disc combo pack. No details on the contents yet, but my gut tells me that 1 of those 4 discs is probably a soundtrack, but that's just a guess. I'm still not convinced we'll get anything in the US. Exploiting Studio Canal's classic catalog titles hasn't exactly been on the top of Lionsgate's list of priorities.
