Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

If I were to buy an UHD-BD player, it wouldn't bother me to spend $199 on a player at this point... it's an acceptable price for a newish format.

But most people don't look at it that way. They're not saying "Oh, this is a better price than BD players in it's first year of existence. This is totally worth it - I'm gonna buy!". They're comparing it to the value of things today. That's all that matters. As already stated, they don't need to buy a player when streaming. They can get 1080p and even 4k streaming now. And if they really want to buy media, BD players are $39 today and the discs are cheaper.

Hell yeah, I paid over $300 for the first blu-ray player (Panasonic DMP-BD55K Blu-ray Disc Player) back in 2008.

The only other Blu-ray player I brought was the Panasonic DMP-BDT220 Integrated Wi-Fi 3D Blu-ray Player for $70 back in 12/05/12.

Great price for that Samsung Ultra HD Blu-ray player. I'm thinking about buying one even though I do not have a 4K TV yet.

Samsung UBD-K8500 now $189.99 on Amazon. Also saw this at Costco (their branded model) for the same price.

Bingo. That's exactly how most consumers in today's economic environment make decisions. The bottom line: They really don't care about incremental improvements in image quality. I will likely buy UHD when I have a compatible display but I feel no compulsion—and I am part of that niche market they need to win over.

Thanks Dan, I picked one up. $96.99 + $8 tax is just insanely good. Has an estimated a ship date of Jan 5th, but for that price, I can wait. I just hope they fulfill it.

Wonder if it's region hackable? I've seen that player at Target, price will probably drop to that same level there, but would still rather wait for the Oppo all things considered.

Do you know what cpu/chipset is running on this particular player?

If you do, it's a matter of disassembling the firmware and figuring out which sets of opcodes correspond to checking region codes, which you then modify to ignore the region check.

Dolby Laboratories, Lionsgate, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Announce Commitment to Release Dolby Vision Titles on Ultra HD Blu-ray in Early 2017

I could quote from the press release, but...errrr, the headline pretty much sums it up. No specific titles mentioned.

The UHD Blu-ray specification mandates that all movies must support the open HDR10 format. Dolby Vision is an optional HDR format on UHD Blu-ray. This means that even if you purchase a Dolby Vision Blu-ray disc you will still be able to enjoy it in HDR10 on a TV without support for Dolby’s flavor.
So does Dolby Vision work "on top" of the HDR10 metadata, or is a completely separate metadata stream?

My understanding is that Dolby Vision requires an HDR10 base layer, with the extra DV metadata on top of it.

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

So I'm taking the leap to UHD. I picked up the LG OLED 65" B6P plus a Samsung player. My receiver is 8 years old, supports trueHD but does not support the latest technology and will not pass through 4K. The salesguy explained to me the various hookups with and without a new receiver. I used to be pretty good at knowing this shit but it all sounded like a foreign language to me. TV first then back to the receiver vs. everything through the receiver was the only part I understood. Before I drop $400 - $500 on a new receiver can anyone explain in English the benefits of a new receiver if there are any? I already have $3500 invested, so if I have to drop another 5 I will. But I certainly don't want to if it doesn't offer any tangible benefits.

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

If you're okay with an unconventional setup, you shouldn't have to buy anything (well, except maybe another HDMI cable).

That Samsung player has two HDMI outs: one labeled 'Main' and another labeled 'Sub'. Plug 'Main' directly to your TV. Plug 'Sub' to your current receiver.

I was in a similar boat. I just got a LG OLED 65" E6P and Xbox One S, and my receiver, a Yahama HTR-5063, couldn't pass through UHD. I ended up hooking the XB1S to the TV, then hooking one of the HDMI inputs on the TV to the HDMI out on the receiver and turning on ARC (Audio Return Channel) on both.

It looks like the ARC feature was part of HDMI 1.4 spec, released in 2009. So your model receiver may be just a little too old to have this feature.

Adam Tyner's method of using the two HDMI outputs on the Samsung Blu-ray player should work. Keep in mind that you should use the Blu-ray player's streaming apps then if you want their sound to come out the receiver, not the TV's apps.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the Sammy 4K player apps can do 4K (unless there's been an update I'm not aware of). Therefore, if you want to watch HDR-10 and Dolby Vision shows from Netflix or another app, you'll need to use the built-in apps on your LG 4K TV (which will render the image in 4K with one of the methods above, if applicable). I have my audio set up through ARC (HDMI from reciever to ARC HDMI input on TV; HDMI from Sammy 4K player to another HDMI input on TV) and it works fine, although I do have handshake issues when trying to do the same with my standard Oppo 103 player, but I don't use that for 4K movies, so I've been using it less and less these days anyway.

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

Samsung player has Netflix 4k but I don't know about HDR. I stopped using its apps when I got my Sony TV because I prefer running my apps through the TV and Netflix has HDR on it. I don't watch Netflix myself, but my granddaughter does a lot and she only needs one remote and when the TV gets turned off, then Netflix stops there too and resumes where she left off. If she were watching through another device then that device would have to be turned off as well.

I have a really old Onkyo with analog connections but frankly the Sony 940C speakers and Sony wireless sub connected sounds good enough so I just use that these days. Makes things a lot simpler too. One of these days I'll upgrade to Atmos but I'm in no big hurry to do so.

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

What Shannon said made sense. Bruce just confused me. Is there any benefit to a new receiver or is any difference limited to how it's hooked up and which piece I use for streaming or apps? Do I need a new receiver to maximize the sound? Is it just the sound from UHD BR discs?

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

Simply put, yes. If you want to utilize the latest sound codecs (Atmos, and DTS:X), as well as be able to pass through full 4k resolution to your TV, you'll need a new receiver. Of course, if you decide to do that, in order to fully hear stuff like Atmos, you'll need at least 7 speakers (5.1.2 setup) for it. And that .2 part will need to be mounted to the ceiling, or you getting some upward firing ones.

https://www.dolby.com/us/en/guide/do...tup/index.html

If you don't want to go nuts with speakers, but at least want to pipe the picture through it to your TV to watch 4K, you'll need an updated 4k receiver for that. Updated meaning at least a 2016 model that has the updated HDCP, HDMI.

I wasn't responding to you but rather Shannon, regarding whether the Samsung apps supported 4k. I then elaborated on my personal setup but it had nothing to do with you at all.

If I quote you, then what I say will have to do with you.

Re: Let's talk about Ultra HD Blu-ray

Mods, can we rename this thread to "Let's Talk About Ultra HD Blu-ray, but only if bruceames quotes you first"? smh

Do these UHD discs with Atmos typically offer a 5.1 alternative or does the Atmos track down convert? (if that's the proper term).

Looks like I won't be able to do anything with ATMOS. I have a vaulted ceiling in the family room with a pattern in the spackle. So not only would I not be able to get into the ceiling with wired speakers without major construction work, the ceiling is too high to bounce sound off of.

As far as Bruce goes, he didn't quote either one of us in his response. Since I posed the question I assumed it was meant for me. Either way I appreciate the help on the subject.

I've decided to keep my existing receiver for the time being. Once I get everything up and running I'll see if I want to change it.

If you don't mind mounting speakers to your ceiling, that's how I did mine. And the edges of my ceiling have angles. I bought some good mounts that were cheap but really great quality that allowed me to pivot the speakers to be in line with my main listening position. Some basic cable sleeves kept them well organized. In all, including the additional 4 speakers, I shelled about about $600 ($400 being the 4 SVS satellite speakers).

Regarding receivers, there are plenty of good ones that are in the $350-$500 range that fully support Atmos and 4K.

This makes more sense...4K, but no HDR support. I think maybe that's what it is.
