Redman briefly goes into what happened there. It sounded like the DP told Sony that the first 20 minutes were too bright on previous masters and he requested that it be made darker on the new master. He didn't however personally supervise this- so whether he wasn't invited to or was offered the opportunity to check but didn't bother and left it up to the techs at Sony is not known. But Redman makes a good point that the vast majority of people bellyaching about it were only familiar with the material from cable, VHS, and other home video releases derived from masters that were incorrect all along.
honest mistake, imo.

I just watched it 2 days ago and was very pleased with the picture and sound. The cheesy disc art, and menu with only "play" had me worried. But the movie had nice detail and color and a destruction scene rumbled my room with nice bass. Anyone on the fence should definitely pick it up. No extras, but great presentation.
