I would say the majority that purchased that second release did so for the extras that were not part of the first release.

The second version of Avatar didn't contain the 3D version in the states. It had a boat load of extras and two extended versions of the movie. But if you wanted 3D, you had to pony up for the 3D release (which I think was exclusive to certain 3DTV bundles for a time...)

Yeah, Avatar has actually had 3 US retail releases so far. The bare bones initial release, the 3D release, and the 2D extended edition. I'm sure they are waiting to release the 3D extended edition closer to the sequel.

Also because Disney rarely does sales, people are paying 25 bucks for it on amazon and possibly more at other stores
