Anyone have problems playing "Dredd"?

I just bought "Dredd" (the new one, not the Stallone version) and it flat out won't play in my BD player, even updated the player's software and nothing. The on screen message says "cannot operate this disc" and the message on the display of my player says "unknown." I looked at the disc and it's not scratched or anything so I was wondering if this was a common problem or not. Does the fact that there is a 3D version on the disc cause this? The packaging does say it contains the standard version as well so...I dunno. I'm wondering if Wal-Mart will even take it back or not.

There was a bad batch that was initially pressed and from what I remember Wal-Mart and Best Buy got most of those. Surprised there's a few floating around there. Take it back and exchange it for another one.

They probably won't refund you with it open, but you shouldn't have any problems exchanging it for another copy as long as you have the reciept (and as long as they have more stock).

I guess I should try mine out now, as I just picked it up from Best Buy (where it's currently 12.99, or 7.99 with upgrade and save).

If all else fails I'd get in touch with the distributor. I've had good results exchanging defective discs directly through them in the past.

Re: Anyone have problems playing "Dredd"?

I also picked this up due to the markdown combined with Upgrade and Save, and also had playback problems. In my case, I tried to watch in 3D, but although both my Blu-ray player (OPPO BDP-93) and projector kicked into 3D mode, the picture was 100% 2D with no depth at all. I ejected the disc and rebooted the player, but this time the player froze up as soon as I hit "Play Movie" from the menu. The only way to get it to work in 3D was to start at Chapter 2 using the Scenes Selections menu and back up to the beginning, then it worked fine.

Picked mine up with U&S, too.

When I put the disc in, it came up with the error message about it being a 3D disc and my player not being able to play it, but then it jumped to the regular menu after about a half of a second.

Maybe your player was having trouble identifying it as a playable disc.

I don't have the disc with me but I'm pretty sure mine only has one side too.

Re: Anyone have problems playing "Dredd"?

so is there some way to tell bad discs from the good ones (going by what I've read concerning bad batches of the BD still existing in stores.)

Yeah, I'm a little concerned about this now as well. I got mine back in Jan from the last upgrade and save and never got around to opening it yet.

I think it's safe to assume they haven't done a repackage.

The disc only has one side. The 3D is encoded as extra frame data for the additional eye view, which can be turned on or off. If you watch in 2D, you only get one eye view. If you watch in 3D, you get both.

Re: Anyone have problems playing "Dredd"?

Have any of the reports mentioned issues playing it back on a PS3?
