Doctor Who: Spearhead from Space - August 2013

This is probably old news to some (it was first announced in October), but I just found out that a classic Doctor Who serial, Spearhead from Space, will be released on Blu-ray in June 2013. This is reportedly the only classic serial that will be released on Blu-ray, as it was the only one shot entirely on film.

It's old but welcome news. There hasn't been an official announcement for the US. Just the UK. We do know that the Blu-Ray will be Region-Free and 50i. Someone from the Restoration Team has said that they were not asked to provide a 60i master. Maybe it's something the BBC will farm out or something that will be asked for down the road. Who knows?

Very cool.

Out of curiosity, was the tv movie shot on film?

re: Doctor Who: Spearhead from Space - August 2013

Nice! I've always wondered about Blu releases, but figured probably most of the original series wouldn't benefit from a blu release. I've always enjoyed Spearhead, ever since I first saw it from a VHS purchase, way back in the early 90s.

On a side note, I'm bummed after finding out last month that Gallifrey One is sold out. I took time off from work in an attempt to go to my first ever Who convention, especially for the 50th anniversary, and find out that Gallifrey One is limiting attendance for the first time.

You can try and buy a membership off of someone who can't go. The Gallifrey One section of the Gallifrey Base forums are a good place to look.

If you do get a membership, hit me up. I'll be there all three days.

It's cool that classic Who is getting a blu-ray release. But I just wish it wasn't one of the weaker stories. I know that it's pretty much the only one that can be on blu-ray, due to it being completely on film, but I'm sure they could do some great things with some stories from the best Doctor, Tom Baker. I'd love to see what they can do with Pyramids Of Mars, Genesis Of The Daleks, or Earthshock with Peter Davison. Tom Baker's Ark In Space could be pretty good on blu-ray.

Except he's not. Tom Baker, by a very wide consensus, has always been the best Doctor outside of three polls in Doctor Who magazine.

I love how you're attempting to argue a subjective opinion in objective terms.

I made the dumb mistake of telling my wife about this. She wants to go bad.

Now I need two tickets! We are in the Ventura County area so LA is no big deal. If you get a line on twi tickets (either Saturday or Sunday...or both), please let me know. I posted over there on the forum hoping I can get some help.

I hope you can make it. Other than that forum, I'm not really in touch with too many people from the con, so I doubt I'd find something for you faster than posting at that forum will. If you can make it, let's get some drinks.

I can't find any tickets on craiglist or eBay. Weird.

I'll keep trying.

Boy, do I hope Supermallet and GizmoDVD get to meet at the con. If not, this'll be the saddest chick flick ever.

Which is really all that can be said on the subject. No other classic Doctor Who story (barring the TV movie, if they went to the time/expense to re-assemble it, like Star Trek: The Next Generation) is capable of a high-definition picture, full-stop.

but I'm sure they could do some great things with some stories from the best Doctor, Tom Baker. I'd love to see what they can do with Pyramids Of Mars, Genesis Of The Daleks, or Earthshock with Peter Davison.
They've already done the best they can with these stories. There is an upcoming Special Edition of Ark in Space that will bring it up to the best-possible picture quality (it was released so early in the DVD range that--until now--it wasn't run through the PAL Transform Decoder like the other stories you mentioned). It should be an upgrade, quality-wise, from the version out there now, plus include more extra features).

Tom Baker's Ark In Space could be pretty good on blu-ray.
It wouldn't look any better than the upcoming Special Edition, except, perhaps, less compression, which would only be a very minimal improvement, certainly not worth a double-dip to most people. You can't "add" resolution to standard-definition videotape, you know.

if you're looking for the best-possible quality/resolution with old Doctor Who, you should have a multi-system TV (like a Sharp), multi-system BR/DVD player (like an Oppo, for best upscaling) and the Region 2/PAL releases (as they're 540i rather than 480i).

re: Doctor Who: Spearhead from Space - August 2013

I haven't been to a Gallifrey Convention since 2005. I use to work right next to the Airtel (where they use to have the convention) and was always there. I might as well have been a volunteer based on the amount of times I trolled the halls. I met 5 of the 11 Doctors at various Gally's over the years. I even had the chance to pee next to Paul McGann in one of the restrooms (which will be the title of my memoir - "Peeing With The Doctor").

When it switched to the Marriott, I think it lost a lot of it's charm (for me). I went twice then never again. It started to feel like the fans became really self-entitled (again, to me) once the new show was announced. A lot of them walked around with a "told ya so" attitude. Very snooty. Kind of killed it for me.

But then, maybe I'm just a crabby old fan who wanted the convention to stay small? Once it went to the Marriott, I didn't want to grow with it? I dunno. Just wasn't fun for me anymore.

re: Doctor Who: Spearhead from Space - August 2013

I've only been last year, but I found almost everyone to be very open and engaging and fun to be around. There were a few people who seemed to complain about everything, but that's to be expected in any large gathering of people, and they were few and far between.

Hey. Could you do me a favor when you go? Say hi to Ken Barr for me (if he has a table in the dealer's room). He use to own Ambrosia Comics & Collectibles in Los Angeles and I would drive down to his store every Friday to pick up the latest Who stuff back in the 90s. After the store closed, I only saw him at Gally once a year. Haven't spoken to him since the new show started.

If you remember, and if he's there, please tell 'em Andrew Rubio said "Hey!"

Ack! I didn't realize Michael Jayston (The Valeyard) was going to be at Gally this year. It's his first one! Now I wish I had gotten tickets. At least one day.
