The Wicker Man: The Final Cut
“StudioCanal contacted me last year in their search for the original materials that have been missing…. I’m very pleased to announce that StudioCanal have been able to find an actual print of The Wicker Man, which is based on my original cut working with Abraxas, the American distributors, all those years ago… They plan, and this is the exciting bit, to actually release it. This version has never been restored before, has never been shown in UK theatres before, has never been converted to Blu-ray before.” "The Wicker Man: The Final Cut will be released in the U.K. on September 27, 2013 in theaters and on October 14, 2013 on DVD and Blu-ray. A U.S. release is not planned as of yet but I wouldn’t be surprised if we were able to keep our appointment with the Wicker Man soon after the U.K. bow." OH GOD, OH JESUS CHRIST! am I excited for this! |
Re: The Wicker Man: The Final Cut
Yeah....I'll be picking this one up. I hope the extras are a plenty. UK gets a theatrical release? Lucky arses.

Re: The Wicker Man: The Final Cut
I've had the zavvi exclusive steelbook on order for awhile now so this is good news.

Re: The Wicker Man: The Final Cut
The remake was good enough for me, I think I will pass on this one...kidding.

Re: The Wicker Man: The Final Cut
It's still kind of unclear to me, even after watching the video announcement Hardy made, whether or not this is a new print of what we have already seen (but was in terrible condition) on the extended cut Anchor Bay put out, or if this is the long lost 2+ hour cut. I hope there is footage we haven't seen before, but as long as what ends up being released is the definitive directors cut, I can't be too upset.
|
Re: The Wicker Man: The Final Cut
Exciting news. Makes me wonder where these long-lost print negatives surface. Are they really stored away in catacomb-like basements of studios hidden from view from years of cobwebs?
|
Re: The Wicker Man: The Final Cut
On the DVD extras, they explained that the original elements from the longer cut had been used as road fill during the construction of a motorway. The only surviving elements they had were visibly inferior to the film elements from the theatrical cut, i.e., you could "see with your own eyes" what was and what wasn't original.

Re: The Wicker Man: The Final Cut
It appears that this announcement just means an original negative (35 mm?) source of the extended cut has been found. It probably means no new footage, but a much-improved quality release of that extended cut. But, the news is still rather obfuscated and unclear.
Even, so I'll certainly want to add this Blu to my collection, and the news is wonderful to me. |

What changes will be instituted in this new cut? Are the others going to be included on the discs as well?

Word is, this new version is based on Hardy's original cut of the film (which was later pared down for its initial run). The theatrical version was originally screened as part of a double bill and runs 88 minutes. Hardy's version ran 102 minutes, so we're looking at quite a bit of new footage. The negatives were originally stored at Shepperton Studios, but have long since disappeared. Until now. Earlier this year, Studio Canal embarked on a world-wide search for any surviving footage. I'm excited to hear that their efforts have paid off. I wouldn't think they'd be making such a big deal about this if it was just the same stuff we've already seen in better quality. |

And, from the facebook page: To all The Wicker Man fans, you’ll be very pleased to know the Blu-ray will include the UK theatrical cut, The Directors Cut (with seamless branching into extra scenes) and of course The Final Cut, plus lots more - now there's a reason to celebrate! Keep following The Wicker Man for more details Even though sadly, we were unable to locate the original negative – We are very excited to be able to present to you a version of the film that is true to Robins Hardy’s original vision and that isn't marred by inconsistencies, most importantly in respect to the quality of sound and image from scene to scene. This is the first proper HD restoration there has been, and this will allow us to release the longest cut ever before seen in UK cinemas! We’d say that deserves a high five! Hello Wicker Man fans, just to let you know that The Final Cut will be available on both DVD and Blu-ray through Amazon, we will let you know when it is ready for pre-order, which will be very soon! We want to give you more information on the release including the extras, which will be announced shortly. Keep following The Wicker Man for more details! |
Re: The Wicker Man: The Final Cut
Why further confuse the issue by promising "three different cuts"? Just give us what you've got, all that you've got, in glorious 1080p. Advertise the true running time -- be it 99 minutes, 102 minutes, or some other running time.
This "final cut" business is just marketing copy gobbledegook. |
Re: The Wicker Man: The Final Cut
What's wrong with including three different cuts? I love having multiple versions.

Long story short, there's nothing we haven't seen before. The print that was found is just the longer cut that already exists in low quality. The "Final Cut" will be a re-edit of the "long version" that will omit the opening sequence of Howie on mainland Scotland before he arrives at Summerisle. |
Re: The Wicker Man: The Final Cut
Silly question perhaps but does anybody know if this is going to be region free or not?

Re: The Wicker Man: The Final Cut
I would assume that there will be a US release at some point in the not too distant future.
|
Re: The Wicker Man: The Final Cut
What is Criterion's relationship with studio canal lately? I know a bunch of their titles went OOP a few years ago, are there currently no titles in the collection from Studio Canal? Because I could see them releasing it.
|
Re: The Wicker Man: The Final Cut
Since Lionsgate now has the US rights to The Wicker Man, and they have a US distribution deal with Studio Canal, it will most likely come from them, not Criterion.

Re: The Wicker Man: The Final Cut
So, we'll get a "Final cut" with less footage than we've seen in previous versions? The precredit sequence cut? Now, I guess I'm glad three cuts will be included, if one of those includes all extant footage which is existing, and in a better quality than we've seen before on previous DVD releases.

Re: The Wicker Man: The Final Cut
Looks like Rialto will be distributing "The Wicker Man" in US theaters. Presumably a blu-ray will follow.
There's an article here: http://bloody-disgusting.com/news/32...in-the-states/ (I can't read the article, though, as bloody-disgusting is giving 503 errors when I try to go there.) |
Re: The Wicker Man: The Final Cut
Here you go:
Rialto Pictures Will Release the FInal Cut of 'The Wicker Man' In the States! New York-based distributor Rialto Pictures has announced the U.S. release of The Wicker Man – Final Cut, the definitive version of Robin Hardy’s thriller of pagan worshippers on a remote Scottish island. Seen for decades only in mutilated copies, the new Studiocanal restoration is the culmination of a long search (conducted via Facebook) for the complete director’s cut. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the cult classic. Rialto will roll out the restored version beginning September 27 at IFC Center, New York City, with runs in Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington and other cities throughout the fall! “After receiving an anonymous letter about a missing 12-year-old girl, devoutly Christian cop Edward Woodward travels by seaplane to a remote Scottish island to investigate. But the islanders welcome neither his badge nor religious devotion, for laird of the isle Christopher Lee and his devoted followers worship only the pagan gods of old – and those gods demand a sacrifice. Woodward fears for the missing girl’s life and follows every possible lead to find her – despite the islanders’ interference – before she becomes a human sacrificial lamb.“ Starring Edward Woodward (Breaker Morant, TV’s “The Equalizer”), horror film legend Christopher Lee, stalwart Hammer vampiress Ingrid Pitt, and Swedish blonde bombshell/Bond Girl Britt Ekland (Man With The Golden Gun, After The Fox, Get Carter), Wicker Man is a quintessential 70s thriller, with the search for its integral version one of cinema history’s great detective hunts. Butchered by its doomed UK distributor to fit on double bills, with its original camera negative apparently lost, The Wicker Man has gathered a devoted fan base over the past four decades, with the complete version their Holy Grail. Some missing scenes were recovered from an obsolete one-inch broadcast tape, but over the years there were rumors of complete 35mm prints floating around. Earlier this year, the search intensified when worldwide rights holder Studiocanal initiated a Facebook campaign to recover the missing 35mm material, resulting in the discovery of a 92-minute 35mm release print at the Harvard Film Archive. This print was scanned and sent to London, where it was recently inspected by director Robin Hardy, who confirmed that it was the same cut he had put together for its American distributor in 1979. This culminated in a digital restoration of the complete U.S. theatrical version, which director Hardy recently anointed as “the final cut.” Hardy, now 83, has said of this restored version, “It fulfills my vision.” |

Re: The Wicker Man: The Final Cut
I'll definitely check out the DC showing. In for the blu-ray too, of course.
|
Re: The Wicker Man: The Final Cut
I've known of the film but have never seen it. It was Edgar Wright mentioning it in a Hot Fuzz commentary that made me want to see it. I'm sure I'd like it. I await to see wtf this BD will have.

Re: The Wicker Man: The Final Cut
Hell, I'd be happy if the extra footage only consisted more of Britt Ekland singing naked. ;)
|
Re: The Wicker Man: The Final Cut
I'll definitely go see this in the theater.
