Yeah, actually it was pretty common, from the late '80s up to the mid to late '90s. They stopped doing rentals pretty much when DVDs became the norm.

I think our local (Nashville) store did them right up until the end. I didn't have much occasion to be in there the last couple years before they closed, but from what I remember they still had a rental section right near the dvds.

I always saw it as any form of violence based on actual historical fact that it occurred.
Which is why movies like Schindler's List, Braveheart, and Saving Private Ryan always make me feel queasy when all the violence actually happens.
Because you know it pretty much actually happened just this way. Although being Jewish, obviously Schindler's will hit me on a completely different level as well. I saw the movie in the theater with my entire family (mom, dad, grandparents) and we were all just bawling our eyes out.

^ I understand what you mean about getting queasy. It's completely different from watching stylized violence a la Kill Bill or Boondock Saints, et al., where the violence is so unreal you just enjoy it for what it is.

I for one cannot wait to watch Schindler's List on my phone. They should have included an audio track of the high school class who went to see the movie and was kicked out in the middle for talking, saying stuff like "That was cold!" when someone got shot.

Get a copy and see if you can add to it a night of audience participation from a showing of Rocky Horror. That should be quite the show.

Re: Schindler's List - March 5th
I had a girlfriend in high school and she wanted this movie for her birthday and made it VERY clear. This is how I learned about rental pricing for VHS tapes back in the day.
I watched the film once with her but honestly remember very little about it and I think I might have to get this release.

I bought the Gift Box Edition DVD nine years ago when that was released. It was elegant, but one of the least practical packaging designs I've come across yet. That Definitive Edition Blu-ray box looks a lot more reasonably thought out to me. I can't find a price point or region listing for that anywhere, though. I could be tempted if the price is right.
