Re: Fake 4k Blu-ray discs from Sony this summer
[/B]This is a bad example, but Batman Begins. This is an old BR, so the BR over the past few years have generally been better.
But, the source material was off and the bit rate was lower than it should have been which caused the PQ not to be as good as it could have been.
Another example both good and bad are the past two releases of "The Terminator"
-1st release did not have a great source to work with.
-The 2nd release must have used a cleaned up source material to work with, bit rate was pumped up, colors were corrected...
What I want with all of the movie I buy on BR:
-Best source material, if that means 4K, then that is what it should be
-Highest bit rate possible
-Use as much of the 50 gigs as possible, though it seems to be difficult for movies to take up the whole space
-Highest bit rate possible with Lossless soundtrack, it is amazing how much better the surround sound and dialog is
I just hate it when the Studio goes the cheaper route and puts out a BR that is not 100% GREAT.
If I was grand master of all new films today, I would make it a law that all new movies had to be filmed in IMAX only.
-The PQ of IMAX when transferred to BR ALWAYS blows me away.
-"The Dark Knight" PQ takes a step up when the IMAX scenes kick it.

I didn't mean Lucasfilm only. Just that every Lucasfilm Blu has had it, including KotCS. But it overall sucks Sony is putting zero effort to promote these 4k discs. Would have been a great opportunity to create a kickass 4k logo for these discs.

I do like that these discs are encoded in x.v.Color and are backwards compatible with non-x.v.Color capable equipment but I feel that's something that should be adopted by all BD discs mastered going forward. No need for a modern Superbit line.

By the way, I messed with the contrast as per your comments. Thanks, it did help flesh the picture out, but the overall transfer wasn't significantly better for A&D. And you're right, test patterns on these discs would have been a major help here.

The thing is that these discs do have test patterns (just press 7669 on your remote from the main menu) but they're not encoded in x.v.Color so they're pretty much useless.

Re: Fake 4k Blu-ray discs from Sony this summer
I don't have any of those on BD. Not even the ones I liked.
I wish they'd stop with this "Mastered In 4K" crap and just give all their new releases going forward the same x.v.Color encode.

As for Pineapple Express, the only thing I can figure is they're determined to have something of a variety by tossing in a comedy and PE is one they happen to have mastered in 4K already.

Technicolor Announces Certification Program to Assure High-Quality 4K Upscaling

Technicolor announced this week that it has developed a certification program to assure high-quality 4K upscaling. The program includes over 100 tests of image quality, including motion video, still images, and text using a wide variety of reference test patterns and evaluation by Technicolor's team of "golden eyes." Objective measurements include spatial bandwidth (blur and aliasing), geometry (cropping and spatial shift, aspect ratio mismatch), temporal judder and de-interlacing artifacts, grayscale clipping and non-linearity, color misalignment versus luminance, jaggies, noise reduction, sharpness-filter ringing, and graphics/GUI rendering.

The first company to be awarded Technicolor's 4K Image Certification is Marseille Networks for its VTV-122X family of video processors. Using the company's UVD (Ultra Visual Detail) context-adaptive technology, these processors upscale and enhance video content from any source, be it Blu-ray, DVD, broadcast, or streaming. There are no currently available products with this technology, but there should be some announcements shortly; in particular, the VTV-122X processors are optimized for source devices such as Blu-ray players, set-top boxes, and streaming-media players, so the first products will likely be in these categories.

Ah yes, because when I hear the name Technicolor I think of the finest disc quality, and not a single thought about all those defective DVDs they manufactured (which caused many labels to abandon DVD-18 discs completely.)

I was at Best Buy this weekend where they previewed the new Sony 4K Ultra HD TV (3840 x 2160, over 8 million pixels). Inside a giveaway booklet, it says:

Anybody that buys a 4K TV now is stupid since you don't even know if it will succeed or a be a huge failure like 3D TV plus you will pay triple now instead of waiting for the price to go down if it does catch on.

Re: Fake 4k Blu-ray discs from Sony this summer
Well 3D TV isn't a huge failure. It's just not a key feature anymore. It's just another bullet point like 1080p, 24 Hz, and internet apps.
But I agree it would be foolish to jump the gun on a 4K TV now. Especially since you know that once they settle across the board on a dedicated delivery method for 4K content (be it a new BD format or whatever) that new format will also include its own little wrinkles that'll likely leave current 4K sets seeming archaic or obsolete. It never hurts to wait. Your wallet will thank you.

Re: Fake 4k Blu-ray discs from Sony this summer
So I finally got a chance to check out the new "Mastered in 4K" Ghostbusters disc and despite all of the gripes surrounding these releases (which are totally justified btw), the new transfer is really, really great. I've read a lot of conflicting opinions on this release and some people are adamant that the old disc was fine, if not better than this new one. I can only imagine that these people haven't actually seen the disc and are basing their opinion on screenshots, or are simply letting their dissatisfaction with the cash grab, "fool the public into thinking this is actually 4k" nature of this release color their perception of it's video quality. Or maybe there really are people out there that enjoy badly blown out contrast. I would totally recommend this to anyone who's a big fan of the film or to anyone who never bought the first release and doesn't really care about the extras.

Re: Fake 4k Blu-ray discs from Sony this summer
I hate buying barebones movies in general, let alone ones that I already own on Blu-ray. If they just would have included the special features, even if it was on a second disc, I would be much more happy about it. As it is, MAYBE I will get them if they get down to $5 each.
