Dogma

What do you all think of this film? Why was it considered controversial enough for studios to toss around the licensing for the home video release so much? How is Sony's effort with the blu-ray?

I read that Sony just lost the rights to this and it has me very interested, might be awhile before we see it again.

I'm a Kevin Smith fan but I never bought the BD. I still have the 2-Disc SE DVD somewhere.

Even though it's OOP GuruAskew at Blu-ray.com (he posts here, too) explained the rights issues and all that in a post there.

This movie has a complicated ownership situation.

It was produced by Miramax under Disney's ownership and then sold off to Miramax founders Bob and Harvey Weinstein under pressure from Disney due to controversy. Lionsgate then distributed the film theatrically and at the time Lionsgate didn't have a home video branch. Universal was distributing Lionsgate titles and they refused to release it on video so it was ultimately picked up by Sony.

A lot has changed in the years since then (Miramax no longer having any ties to Disney, Lionsgate acquiring Trimark for their video distribution and then merging with Artisan and all their subsidiaries to form the largest video library in North America) but Lionsgate and Sony might not have anything to do with the movie all these years later. I know the Lionsgate logo is clipped from the beginning of the film on video. I don't think their involvement was ever for anything other than theatrical distribution.

The Weinstein brothers themselves probably own the rights to the film and I could see it popping up as a Weinstein Company release.

Re: Dogma

I have the BD. I miss the amusing menus from the 2 disc set. Also the theatrical trailer is missing. (BTW, what's the deal with all these catalog titles forgoing the theatrical trailers on the Blu Ray versions of DVD titles that carried them before?)

And no, it does not have the "Judge Not" doc from the Vulgar DVD.

KS's movies have had a spotty history on BD:

Clerks [All extras from the 10th Anniversary edition]
Mallrats [MIA]
Chasing Amy [Different extras from the Criterion Edition]
Dogma [All extras except amusing menus and theatrical trailer]
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back [Only the audio commentary]
Jersey Girl [MIA]
Clerks II [All extras]
Zack and Miri Make a Porno [All Extras]
Red State [not sure]

Re: Dogma

/\ Red State has all the extras from the DVD, and Cop Out has extras not included on the DVD.

I never even heard of Red State, had to look it up on IMDB. Why didn't it get a wide release?

It was a low budget film that no one really wanted to touch due to the subject matter. Smith and Jon Gordon (the producer) planned to release the movie themselves and do no advertising. Smith has a very loyal following that doesn't seem to grow no matter how his films are advertised, so the thought was that social media (mainly Twitter) would be enough to notify his fans of the film. After selling the home video and foreign rights to the film, it broke even, so maybe they didn't want to risk a big theatrical run and just made it available via VOD.

I used to be a huge Smith fan but I don't even own any of his movies on Blu.

Red State is available on Netflix and it was available for months before I got around to watching it (as opposed to 10 years ago when I would have traveled out-of-state to see the first showing) and I was pleasantly surprised.

It's almost unrecognizable as a Smith film, very violent and disturbing and the Parks and Goodman performances are arguably the best in any Smith films. I definitely don't think the film got its due due to the overall backlash Smith has experienced over the years and I also think the film itself was overshadowed by all the distribution drama.

But yeah check it out on Netflix.

Mallrats Bluray is being released July 2 in the UK. No bonus stuff or extras at all.

I'll wait for the US release date.

Re: Dogma

Kevin Smith had a special message included on his Clerks BD inquiring why anyone would even want on watch Clerks in 1080p. It was class Smith-ian self depreciation!

There's a wealth of extras on the DVD. I hope they include them on the US release, being my favorite Smith film.

I went ahead and picked up a copy from amazon while it's still in stock. The general consensus is this is a beautiful transfer and I look forward to getting it and watching it. I think it was pretty lucky that Sony put out this movie for as long as it did because a lot of other studios don't take care of their catalog titles like they do.

I would buy "Mallrats" in heartbeat if it were to be released on Blu-Ray with the DVD extras.

I think the SE's "Governor's Ball" opening was a tad long, but after that I really enjoyed the little bits of extra footage seen everywhere else.

It's probably a Canadian release, but inetvideo.com has this on BD for 3.99 (+2.95 shipping) right now.

Re: Dogma

I would buy all the other Askewniverse movies and "Zack and Miri" on BD if they were put out with the loving care of their DVD counterparts. But, I refuse to buy "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" on Blu ray, if they aren't going to pony up the goods of the 2-disc DVD.

Re: Dogma

JASBSB was a victim of bad timing. It was chosen to be one of Disney's earliest BD releases, from the days when they had to use the less efficient MPEG-2 video and PCM audio, and before dual-layer discs were viable. If it had been released about a year later, it probably would have contained everything.

Nothing that I know of. It has all of the DVD features and then some.

We'll never see a Jay & Silent Bob Strike back SE now that Lionsgate is handling the distribution rights.

Why not?

Because J&SBSB isn't a Lionsgate film (they just distribute it) and the fact that they've only simply reissued the original BD with the same "whoosh" cover art shows they have no interest in reissuing the title.

That, and Lionsgate isn't known for their elaborate SEs.

TheBang 07-02-12 09:12 PM

Re: Dogma

Oh, I didn't realize they'd already reissued the existing edition.

Nevertheless, they have released a lot of Miramax catalog titles over the past couple years, retaining all the special features from the original editions (The Crow, Cider House Rules, etc.). And they're even double dipping on Good Will Hunting in a couple months, adding new features. So, I think there's certainly hope that they will do a proper reissue of J&SBSB with all the extras.

Re: Dogma

There are a few extras from the DVD that aren't on the BD, but they're pretty much forgettable (the lady telling you not to watch the film, easter eggs of Smith and Mewes playing with Jay and Silent Bob action figures). There is a pretty informative booklet that comes with the DVD, though.

Oh, there's nothing wrong with Zack and Miri. I was just meaning that the movie was not technically part of the Askewniverse since it doesn't take place in New Jersey and doesn't have Jay and Silent Bob nor any of the characters from his first 5 movies.

I'll stick with this until there's a proper release on Blu-ray:

This video popped up on my YouTube feed and thought it was worthy of making a post. Coming from Kevin Smith the rights to Dogma have been bought away from Harvey Weinstein and Dogma will have a new physical media release probably in 2025 along with returning to theaters.

Re: Dogma

Dogma is by far my favorite KS movie. I'd even pay to see him tour the movie. i still have the original DVD so a blu or 4K would be awesome.

I'd love for Vinegar Syndrome to jump on it or even Criterion.
