The Avengers - Sept. 25, 2012

Marvel’s The Avengers continues to Hulk Smash records at the box office, but we now have a release date and details regarding the film’s home media release. Joss Whedon’s excellent superhero pic will hit Blu-ray and DVD on September 25th, and as expected the combo set is loaded with special features. The 4-disc Blu-ray/DVD pack includes an audio commentary by Whedon, loads of deleted scenes (including an alternate ending), featurettes and much more. Additionally, a 10-disc Blu-ray super set is also apparently being planned. Hit the jump for details regarding the release.

First off, when Steve sat down with Whedon for the film’s press day, the director revealed that there would be 30 minutes of deleted scenes. We also know that he shot some stuff featuring Captain America reuniting with an old Peggy Carter, so that looks to be included among these deleted scenes. Moreover, Whedon also said that there was a lot of himself that got cut from the finished film, so Whedonites should be doubly excited about the supplemental material.

Okay, here’s the rundown of the Blu-ray/DVD specs courtesy of Blu-ray.com (via JoBlo):

4-Disc BD Combo Pack, 2-Disc BD Combo Pack and 2-Disc DVD Combo Pack
1. AUDIO COMMENTARY BY DIRECTOR JOSS WHEDON
2. MARVEL ONE-SHOT: ITEM 47
3. SECOND SCREEN
4. GAG REEL
4. DELETED SCENES
- Alternate Opening – Maria Hill Interrogation
- Extended Scene – Loki & Barton Strategize
- Steve Rogers – Man Out of Time
- Nick Fury & World Security Council
- Extended Viaduct Fight – Raw Footage
- Fury & Hill Discuss the World Security Council
- Extended Scene – Banner and Security Guard
- Alternate Ending – Maria Hill Interrogation
5. FEATURETTES
- A Visual Journey
- Assembling the Ultimate Team
6. SOUNDGARDEN MUSIC VIDEO – “Live to Rise”

DVD
1. AUDIO COMMENTARY BY DIRECTOR JOSS WHEDON
2. FEATURETTES
- Assembling the Ultimate Team

It looks like we’ll be getting another short film in the form of Marvel One-Shot: Item 47, but it’s not specified if it again stars Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson. Could we see Coulson return? Speculate away! As far as the deleted scenes go, “Steve Rogers – Man Out of Time” looks to be the additional Cap stuff that Whedon was talking about, and it appears we’ll get quite a bit more from Nick Fury and Maria Hill. I’m most excited about seeing more of Harry Dean Stanton’s cameo in “Banner and Security Guard,” and it should be fun to check out the alternate ending.

The Blu-ray.com post also mentions that a 10-disc Blu-ray super set is in the works, but they don’t have any details on the release. This is a curious prospect, as Disney only recently acquired the distribution rights to Marvel films (The Avengers was their first). That said, fans will be most happy to see an ultimate box set that encompasses “Phase One” of Marvel’s film franchise.

Saw it twice in theaters and don't need to see it again.

I guess this will be another situation where you have to buy the 4-disc 3D set to get the extra bonus disc.

I prefer the DVD artwork since it has the Hulk front and center.

I was hoping the reason the movie had shitty posters was so that the BD releases could have the good artwork instead. Sad to see they recycled the shitty posters. :(

I don't think either cover reminds us enough that this is a Marvel film.

Hmm....is this movie any good?

I'm just wondering how many exclusives there will be for this one.

It's okay but a total arthouse flick. Dunno if it'll be your cup of tea.

Day one purchase for sure. Not a real big fan of the artwork for the standard Blu-ray, the 3D is slightly better.

"MARVEL ONE-SHOT: ITEM 47"? Are they now linking the Marvel Cinematic Universe to that of Lost, Alias, Mission: impossible, Cloverfield, Star Trek (plausible since there were comic book crossovers with the X-Men), Once Upon A Time, and basically everything else J.J. Abrams has produced? :D

Spoiler:
Yes, I'm aware that's highly unlikely. :p

Best Buy seems to get Disney steelbooks fairly often. I would love a steelbook version. They could really get creative and have a steelbook with each Avenger on the cover.

Intrigued with the 10 disc set. An Avengers Vol 1 so to speak would be great.

I have all the lead-in films so the ten disc set isn't for me. 4-disc all the way.

Same here. I got Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk on DVD, but quit buying the movies in the series because I figured a set containing all of them was inevitable (plus I knew that I'd eventually get a Blu Ray player - which I now have - and wanted to avoid format double dips). So, unless there are some must-have Avengers store exclusives, I will go for the set. Just hope the price isn't ridiculous.

Because they love seeing Sean Connery dressed as a teddy bear. Duh!

Disc 1: Blu-ray 3D.
Disc 2: Blu-ray + bonus material.
Disc 3: DVD.
Disc 4: Digital Copy.

The Blu-ray disc is the same on both the four-disc and two-disc set, so you'll get all of the bonus material depending on what set you get.

Re: The Avengers - Sept. 25, 2012

I guess I'll wait to see how good the 3D is from the reviews.... so far I've mostly opted for Disney's non-combo packs...even if there's more "value" for the money, it doesn't make sense to spend any more for what you're not going to use.

Re: The Avengers - Sept. 25, 2012

Probably passing on the 10-discer since I have all the solos except Hulk and IM2, but it might depend on what's on the extra discs
