Not all popcorn movies are equal. The Avengers is one of the best popcorn flicks I've ever seen. It's better than any film by Michael Bay and his ilk.

True, I forgot about that sagging middle section of Transformers. I haven't watched the film in a while but I do recall that I did skip that part the last few times. The lack of a sagging middle is what I thought Battleship did better than Transformers.

I don't think all popcorn flicks are equal. I just used those two as examples of some of the better ones (and most similar to The Avengers in terms of silly premise).

However, The Avengers has an awkward opening (which was admittedly far better than the horrid deleted opening that featured more of Colby Smulders' dreadful acting) and doesn't really have much of a flow until Thor makes his first appearance. And, even then, although the plot flows better from Thor's appearance onward, the actual plot is still hohum.

That said, although Bay has a far better eye for visuals than Whedon, execpt for a few bits during the Black Widow-Hawkeye and Thor-Loki fights, Whedon avoids ruining the visuals with excessive closeups and overindulgence in shakycam (which are Bay's weakness). So, yes, I acknowledge The Avengers is one of the better popcorn flicks but it's still nothing more than a popcorn flick.

I can equate people not liking Avengers to an individuals inability to love.

You may not think it's the greatest movie ever, but I really can't see anyone saying "I did not like it."

I can't speak for others but that I cannot say. I don't think it's the greatest movie ever but I did like it (a lot).

Bluray looks great on my 80" LED. :D Sound is amazing too, and some of the battle scenes are insane. I was so disappointed that when I saw the movie, it was the craptastic 3D version and glad to be able to enjoy it more at home.

On topic about the BD:

Kind of iffy on it when you see the darkness of black in some things. India section looks kind of weird there.

I think I agree w/ what bluray.com said:

it is just incredibly dark a lot of the time (especially in the first half of the film). This overall murkiness robs the image of some shadow detail, though outright crush, while hinted at, isn't really a major issue.
Which attributes to the first half. 2nd half of the film rocks like a motherfucker for the most part. Minor image issue but I also noticed that about the film's 1st half. Great image overall though.

Why are you even posting? Shouldn't you be rolling naked on a bed filled with all your different never-to-be-watched copies of The Avengers on BD/DVD/Laserdisc/VHS/Betamax? :p

what does xage even look like? xage..post your pic in the otter thread for it. I demand to know what this collector of DVD/BDs looks like. For some reason I imagine nothing but a warehouse controlled and organized by the invisible.

I've been asking for that forever but nothing except a few shelves with DVDs and blurays jammed onto a couple of shelves are shown.

Watched the movie a second time to listen to the commentary. Didn't get a lot of behind-the scenes-type info about several scenes I would have liked to have heard, but I did get that Joss Whedon is a pretty big gushing fanboy, and he sure likes using the word "specificity" a lot.

Re: The Avengers - Sept. 25, 2012

Why all the hate on xage?

As to the Blu-ray, some quick observations:
  1. I do wish Joss Whedon's commentary had included more behind-the-scenes anecdotes as The Infidel suggested, but after all, it's his commentary. Better than being scripted.
  2. Item 47 was disappointing. I wonder why it was only 2-channel audio? Seemed like a waste of resources.
  3. The gag reel could've been better. Surely there was more material than that. Much of what was used was not even candid.

Sounds like I'm nit-picking, but I'm actually quite pleased with the Blu-ray. The picture is incredible (2D), and the 7.1 audio for the feature was well-utilized. I originally saw this in a very good theater (Carmike's BigD). It translated well on Blu-ray to my modest home theater.

Would've been cool to get Kevin Feige commentary.

Just watched this again and I still liked it a lot, and something hit me about Loki's scepter.

Spoiler:
I know he got it from Thanos's guy, so was that the blue Infinity Gem in it? The blue gem is the mind gem, and it allowed him to control people and caused the paranoia in the lab.

it would fall greatly out of Thanos' character to allow anyone to have it. Especially if he had them to give. I don't think it's the mind gem. Also....wasn't the Cosmic Cube and the staff gem thingie alike in power source? Wasn't that what Banner (and later Stark) searching for...via the staff's power?

Avengers sold fantastic on BR:
-72% of the DVD/BR were sold on BR, record setting precentage

My guess from the % numbers that were reported for DVD and BR sales:
-Avengers sold about 4 million copies of BR (which should put it over $100 million in the 1st week of sales)
-The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 sold over 100,000 BR disks

Wow. Those are really great numbers for BD.
