Re: The Avengers - Sept. 25, 2012

I wouldn't disagree that this feels like a Michael Bay movie (but good). But here's the thing: Michael Bay is fully capable of making entertaining movies. Bad Boys, The Rock, the first Transformers, even The Island was interesting. The problem is that while Bay is capable of putting together some stunning action sequences, he has trouble discerning good from bad when it comes to story and character. Joss Whedon is much better with story and character, so The Avengers plays like a Michael Bay movie if Bay were a smarter storyteller.

I have no issue with this. I think the The Avengers is as close to perfect you can get in a popcorn film. But I don't have any illusions about it being anything other than a popcorn movie.

Tom, its a big mistake on my end overlooking your post until this evening upon reviewing mine.

Its sad to admit:

YES, I Did NOT and FAILED to get the Military Base Exclusive (which by the way
encompassed a wider range of competitive collection hunting - eg: Coin Collectors and Patriotic Memorabilia Collectors)

The collection below is NOT Complete

Does anyone else do? It's a popcorn movie...a damn good one but a popcorn movie to it's core. Just like many good movies we grew up with.

I don't know, I've seen plenty of criticisms of it from people who think it's stupid beyond belief.

Huh...oddly enough that's what I'd call those Bay Transformer films, though there is quality stuff in there sprinkled...it's a goddamn mess as a cohesive element. I wonder if they like those films.

That's pretty much how I feel about it. The actual plot (what it's about) isn't all that hot but the story (how it develops) and the banter is entertaining. That's why I view it as a good Bay movie. But I also don't feel the film is revolutionary by any means and it's narrative is it's weakest link.

I love how Whedon got all these characters to play off one another and how well the film was paced once Thor showed up. He even made the wait 'til Hulk finally appears very worthwhile. But I expected a better plot from him.

I do understand that he arrived in the MCU very late in production (around the time that Thor and Captain America were being made) so he had little time to put it all together. However, given that he's now Godfathering the MCU, I expect something far better from his script for The Avengers 2.

I've actually seen people (mainly Whedon fans) swear up and down that The Avengers is some magnificent achievement in cinema and keep elevating the writing to extremes. Which is why I found that "Honest Trailer" hilarious. So, no, there are some very vocal folks out there that don't get that this is just an entertaining popcorn flick.

I don't think it's revolutionary, but I would say it's close to the pinnacle of that type of film.

And I'm not sure sure what sort of plot you were looking for. The Avengers was always destined to be: massive threat to earth requires heroes join forces and put aside personal squabbles.

Yeah....this movie wasn't all that good. I gotta stop with these blind buys. It was alright...but I don't really care about Iron Man and Thor whining for 2 hours. Loki was a pretty pathetic villain.

And fuck, I'm a Whedon fan. I didn't care for Cabin in the Woods either.

Sorry...just wasn't that good.

The high-praise this film for from everyone certainly didn't help. Countless times I'd read "Seeing The Avengers for the fifth time!!!!".

I thought Amazing Spider-Man was better.

I think you need to remember that, in agreeing to make this movie, Whedon was limited by certain restrictions imposed on him. Marvel dictated the big-picture story, not Whedon. What Whedon had to do was make the script coherent and entertaining within the guidelines he'd been handed.

That's always going to be the case. Given the success of this one, Marvel may give Whedon a little more slack next time, but the studio will never let go of the leash.

I understand that full well. But some very vocal folk make it out to be far better than it truly is. It's lots of fun and entertaining but it's no better than the first Transformers or Battleship. It's a dumb-fun popcorn flick and there's no shame in that. It's just funny (and a tad weird) to see some fans make it seem like some grand achievement.

But I hope you guys don't get me wrong. I enjoyed the flick a great deal and even ordered the BD. I wouldn't bother if I hadn't been entertained by it. It even left me looking forward to the sequel. But I'm also not blind to its flaws is all.

Re: The Avengers - Sept. 25, 2012

Whoa whoa whoa. It's better than TF... For sure. I can't say anything for Battleship but...it sure as hell looks better.

Again...none of use here are saying it's....uhh....a masterpiece in cinema. It isn't. And I'd like to see someone who actually thinks it's so amazing that it is one in their eyes. But...for a big popcorn movie...it gets in a lot and it's fun. Weakest thing in it is probably the direction of it, it's not badly directed but...it's not amazing in it's direction..and it didn't need to be.

Spoiler:
Also...on the commentary we learn about why the death of Coulson happened. Kevin Feige wanted it. Joss knew he was going to get shit for it too cuz..well..he does that. I found that funny.

It IS better than those movies. Transformers had several completely useless characters that bogged down the film and ground it to a halt. The Avengers only has Colby Smulders, and she doesn't take up that much screen time.

Not all popcorn movies are equal. The Avengers is one of the best popcorn flicks I've ever seen. It's better than any film by Michael Bay and his ilk.
