Alright, Ghibli newb question here : I own Ponyo already. Wanted to pick up a few more at Costco. They had them all (didn't have the Blus out, only the DVDs. I had to tell them to go find the Blu Rays). Anyways, I picked up Totoro, Naussicaa, and Mononoke. Did I buy the right three to start out with?

Re: Studio Ghibli in HD

You can't go wrong with those 3. Totoro is my favourite Ghibli but I'm also fond of Castle in the Sky and Kiki's Delivery service.

Is that in Australian or American dollars ?! Any reviews of these versions? The offer is tempting, I must say....

Obviously it's in AU$ since it's the Madman website.
There are no reviews yet, since it's more than a month away from release date.

For the Japanese and UK Hayao Miyazaki, you can see the specs here at the DVDCompare listings, but all the special features were dropped from the existing Blu-rays.

But according to the Madman website, it will have All special features from all special edition versions of the featured films. plus a bonus disc as well. Sounds like Madman is making the most definitive version.

As for the quality of the Madman discs, they are pretty much ports of the UK Studio Canal discs.

It makes me sad thinking that Marnie could be the last feature film from Studio Ghibli.

They won't take Mastercard?

What does that have to do with Costco?

Mononoke was where I started. It's a little ayptical-Miyazaki's films aren't usually quite as violent or as epic-but it's a masterful film that I'd recommend to pretty much anyone. Naussica is sort of a tonal prequel. I've never met anybody who didn't like Tororo.

Are Ghibli as rigid about their masters as other Japanese studios?

Are they having financial problems? I know that Miyazaki has hung up his hat a couple of times.

I was really hoping that Disney would instead release another set of 3, so that "My Neighbors the Yamadas" would have also been upgraded to blu-ray.

If they had, this would be all of the Disney Ghibli releases finally upgraded to blu-ray.

Maybe, however doubtful it may be, they are planning on finally releasing "Only Yesterday" along with upgrading "My Neighbors the Yamadas" later to try and tie in with GKIDS releasing "When Marnie Was There" when it hits blu-ray in the U.S.

The Japanese DVD had the red tint issue. Disney corrected that for the American DVD release.

My bigger concern is the English subtitle translation. Has Disney shafted another Ghibli disc with lousy "dubtitles"?

According to Dvdbeaver, it's dubtitles. It's not that big of a deal for me because I love the English dub, but they should have the proper subtitles for the Japanese track.

On the bright side, the PQ & Audio looks amazing!

He writes "He believes it's dubtitles" which makes no sense, just flip on the English audio and do a quick comparison.

per the blu-ray forum if you go into the menu, there are 2 subttile tracks, the litteral translation and the dubtittles

I believe the two tracks are "English subtitles" versus "English SDH" captions with sound effects spelled out. Whether they are different translations is unclear.

hanshotfirst1138 06-16-15 09:12 PM

The DVD of SA has SDH English subs based on the dub and a proper translation based on the Japanese dialogue. Same with PM. Apparently, the PM DB omitted the proper translation track :(.

Unfortunately, what subtitles were on the DVD are not necessarily an indicator of what will be on the Blu-ray. Disney has a history of including dubtitles on Blu-ray editions of movies that had properly translated subtitles on DVD.

The sad fact of the matter is that current management at Disney do not value the foreign-language titles in their catalog and treat them as Second Class properties behind English-spoken productions. They routinely relegate native language tracks to lossy audio while prioritizing dubs with lossless, and dumb down subtitles to simplified translations even when better translations are available.

Josh Z 06-17-15 09:45 AM

Re: Studio Ghibli in HD

I would love it if someone knowledgeable could put together a comprehensive list of Ghibli Blu-rays that catalogs all the flaws in the Disney releases (dubtitles, lossy audio, bad transfers, etc.) and points out which foreign releases are the best English-friendly alternatives.

DaveyJoe 06-17-15 09:49 AM

Re: Studio Ghibli in HD

Have there been any bad transfers with the Disney Ghibli BluRays? They've actually been respectful to the look of the films, by refraining from DNR and not boosting contrast or saturation levels, like they've done with their own titles.

edit: I found this. It doesn't have the most recent releases, but it might be a good starting point.

Very difficult to read the formatting of that, and it's missing a lot of info on American releases that have been out for a while (unless they're discussed later in the thread, which I don't have the time or patience to dig through), but I guess it's a start. Thanks.

Unfortunately, the subtitles on Spirited Away are the notorious dubtitles (i.e. subtitles made from the dubbed audio track similar to Princess Mononoke) and are not the same as the subtitles from the Japanese release of the movies which were much more descriptive and literal. The dubtitles are very brief and not that descriptive at times. I cannot comment on The Cat Returns as I did not own the Japanese version of the movie.

Re: Studio Ghibli in HD

While I don't have the Japanese blu-ray release to compare, I do have the original Japanese Ghibli Collection DVD and from doing a little spot checking, the normal English sub track from the blu is almost the same as the English sub track on that (no English audio). It swaps a few 'She' and 'Her's and things here and there like that, but overall it's the same, and where it differs it's much closer to that than it is the dub track on the blu where practically every line I saw was off in some way or another. Perhaps the poster from AVS might have just checked out the English for the hard of hearing sub track and not both? Or he's listening to the English dub and noticing instances where the English dub sometimes embellishes where the Japanese subs do not?

Are there any specific instances that would show otherwise that I could check? Let me know any timestamp to check if so.

The Collected Works of Hayao Miyazaki (Amazon Exclusive) [Blu-ray]

Out in the US on 11/17/2015

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...IL._SL500_.jpg

No word whether the movie discs will include the special features from the individual sets (like the Australian set) or if the new discs will have all special features removed (like the Japanese and UK sets)

Re: Studio Ghibli in HD

They appear to be exactly the same BD discs as the individual Disney releases. Reasonable to expect that the same features will be on each disc.

Are you asking about the Disney/Region 1 releases? Once in a while they go on-sale.

Costco sometimes has them. There were also a few titles at $11.99 back in October at Best Buy.

How was the film? I wasn't thrilled with Princess Kaguya.
