Re: Studio Ghibli in HD
It's rare, but there have been PG13 "Disney" movies in the past.

Re: Studio Ghibli in HD
Any news of extras for Princess Mononoke?
|
Re: Studio Ghibli in HD
The Miyazaki boxset was to include the Miyazaki directed music video for "On Your Mark", had to be deleted from the set at the last minute.
Ghibli has announced that they will now send out a blu-ray or dvd of the music video on its own, for free for people who purchased the boxset. |

I'm very surprised that the Disney banner is all over the Princess Monokee Blu ray since it's rated PG-13. It was the reason Miramax released it and not Disney when it first arrived in the states. I'm still waiting for Spirited Away. I don't want to spend 70 bucks on the Japanese Blu Ray.

How do you know it's region free? All of the other Studio Canal releases are Region B

Re: Studio Ghibli in HD
per the main review here, Disney fucked up and did not include regular subtitles that translated accurately the dialogue like the original dvd, that the new blu is essentially dubtitles

Re: Studio Ghibli in HD
That's disappointing, I was very close to pre-ordering that title, but I'm glad I didn't.

Re: Studio Ghibli in HD
It happens all the time with anime releases.
|
Re: Studio Ghibli in HD
Of course that would happen...
|
Re: Studio Ghibli in HD
Was the Miramax DVD also dubtiles? Still have my copy of it. Kind of disappointed that Disney put dubtitiles on the blu-ray, I might still pick it up for the the 19 min. extra of film promoting in North America.

Does Kiki's Delivery Service also have dubtitles?

It's actually sort of strange that this is what they did for The Wind Rises on it's release... |

Yes, but it didn't happen with the last release of the same film, and they already have an alternate proper set of subtitles!

It has happened before and will happen again. Subs are almost always an afterthought for most studios.

They're the same style of dubtitles from the 2010 DVD, which is a mix of direct text from the English dub and some deviations. The subtitles also omit points where the English dub adds more elaboration in scenes.
Did this also affect any of Disney's prior Ghibli Blu-rays? |

for Kiki one way to "tell" if its subtitles or dubtitles is if the drink Kiki drinks is coffee or hot choccolate (coffee for subs)

PM had an adapted English language screenplay written Neil Gaiman. While interesting and valid in its own way, it doesn't constitute a substitution of a more proper translation. I'd say to send complaint e-mail, but come, Disney wouldn't be listening even if anyone did. I suppose there's the hope that the UK release will fix the issue, but it's doubtful.

The Blu-ray's subtitles (which are the 2010 DVD's subs with a few tweaks) and the English dub are by and large the same, but there are moments throughout where the text differs from the English audio and gets closer to the raw translated script (http://www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/kik...pt_kiki_en.txt). The 2010 DVD also does this, but a few alterations have been made since then that get the subs a little closer to the original intentions, such as properly referring to the drink Osono offers to Kiki as "coffee" instead of "hot chocolate". |
Re: Studio Ghibli in HD
Other than Nausicaa, has Disney gotten any of the Ghibli Blu-rays right? It seems that they've f***ed them all up in one way or another.

The next US wave will be on February 3rd, 2015:
"Porco Rosso", "Pom Poko", and "Tales From Earthsea" Blu-rays. |

Ugh Spirited Away when?!

Re: Studio Ghibli in HD
Per the blu-ray.com review, The Wind Rises has no issues with subtitles, & is in mono which apparently was the filmmakers intent. Did anyone see it in theaters & was the audio just front & center throughout?

Bill Hunt says he contacted Disney about the subtitle issue. He hasn't updated the issue since. I have no doubt it means that he contacted them and they said "Yup. That's right. They're dubtitles. Bye, Mr. Hunt."

I purchased Princess Mononoke at Costco. Even with the dubtitles, it was hard to pass. I just wish that they had Kiki and The Wind Rises.

Re: Studio Ghibli in HD
Just finally got around to getting Kiki and can confirm the English audio has the same problem as the last DVD. Anytime a voice gets high pitched and loud in volume it distorts a little like talking into a fan. :(

Most of the Ghibli dubs are pretty good.

I'm also still upset that they didn't include the new score on Castle in the Sky. It is far more mature and full sounding. |
