So, Only Yesterday has never had a region 1 release, right? How consistent have they been about bringing these to the US after the Japanese Blu releases?
|
Re: Studio Ghibli in HD
Who has the rights to Castle of Cagliostro is the US nowadays? Manga Entertainment still own it?
|
Re: Studio Ghibli in HD
Manga/Anchor Bay released the anamorphic DVD in 2006, and it's still in print. I'd assume them.

Disney releasing the BDs in the US is not consistent at all. It could be anywhere between 6 months later (like "Ponyo"), to a year and a half ("Laputa"), or never (like "Yamadas") compared to the Japanese discs. |

Still not a word on USDM Bluray Spirited Away or Mononoke. This is ridiculous. Both got US theatrical releases. Spirited Away won a goddamn Oscar, fer crissake.

Re: Studio Ghibli in HD
I'm sure it will look good, as the DVD from Sentai was from the Japanese DVD master, and I'd assume the Blu-ray will be from the Japanese BD, but I'm worried about the extras. Their DVD had nothing. Hopefully the Blu-ray will.
Also, the UK disc of "Grave" in November seems to be pulled from schedule. So the US disc might be coming first. |
Re: Studio Ghibli in HD
Is Whisper of the Heart a good upgrade? I read somewhere else that the Bluray image shows 5-10% more of the original image than the DVD.

Yeah, the original synth soundtrack (made that way only because of budget constraints) is MUCH better than the fully orchestrated soundtrack that Hisaishi and Miyazaki prefer. /sarcasm

Come on, dude- you know what I meant. Re-scored by the filmmakers at their own behest is not the same as re-scored to meet a foreign-market cultural mandate. Obviously, the intent of the original filmmakers is the concept we're going for.
Regardless, I liked the new score on Castle in the Sky. If Disney had hired somebody else to rescore it that would be a different matter. I think dropping it on the last DVD and not reinstating it on the blu-ray was disappointing. Now, if I found out that Miyazaki had specifically requested that the new soundtrack no longer be used and it wasn't just Disney being inconsistant or using poor judgement/quality control I might feel a little better about it. Cause, along these lines, I doubt that Miyazaki had said, "Hey, I'm upset about all those extra lines in Kiki, so I want you to remove them. Oh, and while you're at it, why don't you add a weird reverb to Kiki's voice so she sounds like she's talking from inside a toilet bowl." :grumble: |

If they did it under such duress and hated having to rescore it then why did they release a soundtrack of the new score in Japan and include it on their own DVDs?

Re: Studio Ghibli in HD
I thought the posts above said that the new score was included on the Japanese and UK Blu-Rays, but just not the US one.
Regardless, they did release a soundtrack of the new score in Japan. I bought it. |
