Announced along with a lot of other WB titles, but this is one I've been feverishly anticipating.
VERY happy to see this getting out there.

Like I said in the release announcements thread, neighbors beware! The audio on this will be shaking the foundation.
Looking forward to it.

I think the makeup effects still look pretty damn good too. They were groundbreaking at the time.

That's a tough question. I would say either sci-fi or psychological horror. It's hard to pick just one.

I wonder how much work they will put into it. The DVD looked pretty bad of this if I remember right. I haven't seen it on any of the HD cable channels yet either.

They apparently reissued it, but I presume it's the same transfer. The more recent pressing has the same cover art as what is shown for the BD.
EDIT: Amazon now has the BD pre-order up.

I told my buddy that AS would be awesome to watch and he had never heard of it.

given that the film got a 70mm/6-track sound (35mm blowup) release in the theaters I'm sure the bluray will look and sound awesome!

Has anyone gotten this, how does it look? Or are you waiting until Sunday to get it for only $5 with the Best Buy u&s sale.
Also, I think this is the movie, but can someone confirm this is the one where in one particular scene I recall from my childhood the main character is in the house and "glowing" for lack of better terms and begins hitting the wall repeatedly and it starts to change him either back or into some other form. Because I look at some still shots and it shows him in a vertical chamber, but I seem to recall there was a horizontal chamber that he would lie in, perhaps in addition to the vertical one apparently? I just don't want to buy this and it turns out this is not even the movie I'm thinking about.

It arrived last night but I haven't watched it yet, so I'll update as soon as I do.
Your memories of the movie are correct. There are scenes with both horizontal and vertical isolation chambers, and the first scene you describe ("hitting the wall") is at the climax of the movie. (This scene was also basically copied for the music video of "Take On Me" by the band A-Ha).
The makeup effects for the transformations are by the legendary Dick Smith, and IMO still look pretty darn fantastic in the CGI age.
EDIT: In the event there's anybody out there who has never seen it, 3:24 to 3:33 of the video below = Altered States homage/ripoff (take your pick).
Take On Me
