Don't. The UK release is a mess. Only stereo audio, and a middling transfer with washed-out black levels and pulsing, sparkly grain during night scenes.

If Twilight Time can get access to a better master (the American DVD release didn't have these issues), it has the potential to be a big improvement.

the sound on the UK blu ray is not right, its supposed to be 5.1 HD but the dialogue plays through all 3 front speakers.

No, all worldwide Blu-ray editions of Wild at Heart are the American theatrical cut with the headshot obscured by smoke.

Having seen both versions, the "censored" version is better, IMO. The unobscured gore effect looks really fake and cheesy.

There were two Blu-ray releases of Wild at Heart in the UK. The one in 2010 had a DTS-HD MA 5.1 track with an authoring error that caused dialogue to come from all three front speakers. That's the one you're referring to. A second Blu-ray edition was released in 2012 with a PCM 2.0 track.

The American DVD release of the movie in 2005 was supervised by David Lynch. That disc had a Dolby Digital 5.1 track with the dialogue properly encoded in the center channel. However, because Lynch hates surround sound, it had no rear channel activity at all. (It was really a 3.1 mix.) All things considered, when decoded with ProLogic II, the PCM 2.0 on the 2012 Blu-ray is reasonably close to what Lynch wanted, but lacks the dedicated LFE channel.

Here's a summary of the movie's history:

2005: American DVD, MGM. Supervised by David Lynch. Proper 5.1 mix, but lossy Dolby Digital and standard-def video.

2008: French Blu-ray, BAC Video (now out of print). Proper 5.1 mix in DTS-HD MA, but forced French subtitles that cannot be removed.

2010: French Blu-ray, Universal. DTS-HD 5.1 track with encoding error. No forced subtitles, but some on-screen text has been replaced with French. Video transfer has washed-out black levels in night scenes. (Neither the MGM DVD nor the BAC Blu-ray have this problem.)

2010: UK Blu-ray, Universal. Similar to French 2010 disc, but all on-screen text is original. Bad DTS-HD MA 5.1 track. Washed-out blacks.

2012: UK Blu-ray, Universal/IndiVision. Same problematic transfer with washed-out blacks. PCM 2.0 audio.

All of these are flawed in one way or another. There's plenty of room for Twilight Time to improve on them and finally provide a definitive Blu-ray release for the movie.

Now, they're really grasping at straws. How can one justify $35 + tax + shipping for any of those lackluster titles, several of which I've never even heard of?

It's sad to see films like "Wild at Heart" and "Equus" at TT. These should be part of the Criterion Collection, or farmed out to a company like Shout/Scream.

Just because you don't care about these titles doesn't mean that they don't have fans. I'm definitely in for Alfredo Garcia, Broadway Danny Rose and Wild at Heart.

I think that it's cool that niche titles like this can get high-class treatment from companies like Masters of Cinema, Criterion, and Twilight Time. Yeah, it's on the pricey side, but given that physical media is on its knees, it's cool to see a company that caters to the fans so directly and does this kind of passion project work. As has been pointed out with many recent releases, it's a damn shame that some more high-profile titles from studios with a lot more resources don't get the same treatment.

BIG difference is that Criterions (besides being loaded with worthwhile extras) can usually be found discounted 30%-50% off their retail. Not so much with TT.

Actually all but a very few are selling for $30.00 +. I have to keep reminding myself that I gladly used to purchase laser discs for that much and more, and they had inferior PQ (although superior in their day) and side changes (although I miss the large cover art and boxed collector editions). It's all relative and determined by advancing technology.

I have adjusted to TT's business model. These days we are spoiled by being able to grab Blu-rays on Amazon for under ten or fifteen bucks after a few months in release. And I do not buy every title TT releases. I pick and choose, but what I have gotten from them has never yet disappointed me. Special features are increasingly being added. The PQ is superb (I don't think they'll even accept a licensing agreement for a title unless it meets a rather high standard). Isolated scores are rare from any other company anymore, but they turn up here on about 90% of the releases. Trailers, also a vanishing species from the studios, are also most always included. Their booklets are not as extensive as Criterion's, but they're pretty nice. Plus, it is obvious the people who own and run this small company are completely dedicated to film and to superior video transfers, which is less true among the majors anymore. All in all, I thank God TT is picking up a lot of the titles we'd never hope to see on Blu any other way.

I don't have much of an issue with Twilight Time's pricing, but I do resent their limited availability. So far I've grabbed the ones I've really wanted right away, because if I waited they might be sold out (though I recently checked Lost Horizon and it appears to still be available a year later.) I can't afford to buy every single thing the day it comes out though, and then you have cases like Fright Night where people bought them up just to resell at inflated prices.

Paradoxically, I agree with you. I think back to the days when I paid $40 for laserdiscs (about $60+ today) and realize how spoiled we've been with Blu-ray's pricing structures from the major studios. These days are very nearly over, and I suppose I'll have to adapt to paying $30 for catalog releases now, and even more in the future if I want to have any hope of buying my movies on physical media.

What annoys me is that Sony couldn't have put the titles out themselves, leaving TT to release them in 3000 limited editions, many of which don't even sell out. Also, the used market on these limited releases isn't at all like other titles. Values go up rather than down, so we'll never be able to snatch any of the titles that we missed for $5 to $10 like with the major studio catalog releases.

I don't have a problem with TT doing these limited runs but I would prefer they be numbered and they really need to enforce a strict policy of only one copy per address which would cut down considerably on the extra copies showing up on eBay at inflated prices.

That makes a lot of sense on the hot titles expected to sell very well for TT.
