I gotta say I'm pretty psyched about Highlander 2 if it will have the truly absurd theatrical cut, which hasn't been released on DVD/Blu Ray afaik. I know it says "Renegade Version" right on the cover but, yknow, dare to dream and all. I find it bizarre that they have a movie in Highlander 2 where the only asset is that it's ridiculous and awful and they keep trying to 'fix it' so it makes more sense and is less weird. The Special Edition was being done just after Lionsgate bought Artisan, which is how they got the republic catalog. I wonder if they thought they owned the film? Seems odd to spend all that money on new effects work to a movie you 1. Don't own full rights to 2. Has a limited audience to sell to. When Paramount first got the Republic library back they announced a new dvd of the Special Edition, but it never hit stores. From what I heard, Evidently Lionsgate blocked them from releasing it. This movie has at least 4 official versions U.S theatrical, International theatrical, Renegade and Special Edition. There may even be some alternate Tv versions around. It would be nice to have all these in one collection. I understand the issues with the film, but I actually enjoy on some level. The style of the sets and cinematography is pretty cool. |

Independent distributors Olive Films have revealed that they will add two more titles to their catalog in early 2014: Sidney Lumet's The Pawnbroker (1964), starring Rod Steiger, Geraldine Fitzgerald, Brock Peters, Thelma Oliver, and Linda Geiser, and Joseph Losey's Stanger on the Prowl (1952), starring Paul Muni, Joan Lorring, Vittorio Manunta, Aldo Silvani, and Luisa Rossi. Stranger on the Prowl This two-pronged story concerns a nameless, homeless and rejected man who is looking for a new life, and a young boy from an impoverished family, who is forced to steal when he loses his milk money. The Pawnbroker Rod Steiger gives a mesmerizing Oscar nominated performance as the embittered survivor of a Nazi death camp who can't escape the ghosts of his past or the powerful lesson that awaits him in the future. Now a Harlem pawnbroker, Sol Nazerman condemns the dregs of society who pass through his shop and ridicules his idealistic assistant, Ortiz. But when Ortiz, powerfully portrayed by Jaime Sanchez, puts his life on the line for Sol, only then does he learn the ultimate truth about hope and humanity. Under the brilliant direction of Sidney Lumet, Steiger's first starring role in the major leagues is among the finest of his career. Hugely controversial and denounced by everyone including the Catholic Legion of Decency for a taboo-breaking nude scene, this landmark film remains not just powerful entertainment, but a stunning example of how movies can alter our emotions and perceptions forever. |

Schwing! They'll unfortunately be barebones if Olive is releasing them.

Michael Ritchie took an "Alan Smithee" credit in that, but it's still fun- and the only time you'll see a rating card in the middle of a movie!

re: The Olive Films Blu-ray Thread
I have to give Olive Films credit. They put out movies on Blu-ray that no other distributor would think to release.

re: The Olive Films Blu-ray Thread
I've been posting the threads in the DVD Talk section about King of the Hill since Olive picked up the DVD releases from where Fox left off. I was pleasantly surprised to see the announcement from TVShowsonDVD that the final season is not only coming to DVD but to Blu-ray. It really is a great series and it will be nice to have the one season that was broadcast in HD available on Blu-ray.
Really makes me wish that Olive could pick up the rights to The Simpsons even though the releases would likely be bare bones. I doubt Fox would ever license it out though as its such a big brand for them. |
re: The Olive Films Blu-ray Thread
Some great, rare releases there. PHASE IV? Hope it has the newly discovered ending intact. In for all of the horrors, including THE END, THE DEADLY BEES, and PHASE IV. Wonderful news. And, hasn't MANDINGO already been released to Blu?
|
re: The Olive Films Blu-ray Thread
Nice. I like seeing a few Charles Bronson Cannon titles on that October list.

In response to the many inquiries we’ve received about Saul Bass’ PHASE IV – questions about the ‘lost’ ending and which version is being released on*October 27,*2015 – we can confirm we are releasing the original 1974 Paramount Pictures 84-minute theatrical cut, as it is currently the only version available for licensing.*We have no doubt that fans of the film will be pleased with the Blu-Ray version, its first time available in HD. Much has been written about PHASE IV since its initial theatrical release in 1974 including the thought-to-be-lost “original” or “expanded” ending of the film that was shown in 2012 following a special presentation of the theatrical release version in Los Angeles by The Cinefamily. It should be noted that before 2012 Saul Bass’ original ending has never been shown theatrically, although select shots can be seen in the original theatrical trailer. |
re: The Olive Films Blu-ray Thread
Thanks for the info on PHASE IV. It will so wonderful to have it on BD that I'll forgive the lack of the re-discovered ending. As I've seen that ending, it truly makes the film. At least a (very poor quality) version of it exists on Youtube, which I've archived for safe-keeping.

Re: The One and Only Kino Lorber and Olive Films Blu-Ray Thread

Dawes (Norris) finds himself run afoul of the corrupt and unscrupulous Judge Joshua Trimmings (George Murdock, The Mack) and his henchmen, when he ventures into a small desert town in search of his missing brother. Judge Trimmings doesn't much like truckers ...and Dawes doesn't much like anyone who messes with his family – it' s a combustible combination in the high-octane action drama Breaker! Breaker!, directed by Don Hulette (A Great Ride), written by Terry Chambers (13 Nuns) and co-starring Jack Nance (Eraserhead), Michael Augenstein (Macbeth), Don Gentry (Born Again) and Terry O' Connor. TV commercial director Paul Groves (Peter Fonda, The Wild Angels), with both his personal and professional life in crisis due to a crumbling marriage and stagnating career, begins to experiment with LSD to free himself artistically. Paul' s trip provides the viewer with psychedelic and hallucinatory moments worthy of Fellini, as an onslaught of strange, beautiful and terrifying images flood Paul' s subconscious and leads to a revelatory denouement. Featured in The Trip are Bruce Dern (co-star of the Corman directed The Wild Angels) as John, the self-proclaimed LSD guru who sends Paul on his trip; Susan Strasberg (Psych-Out) as Paul' s estranged wife; and Dennis Hopper (Chattahoochee) as a drug-culture every man. STREET DATE: MARCH 22. Undertow With the drama thriller Undertow, director David Gordon Green proves once again his ability to navigate any genre (the romantic All the Real Girls, the dramatic George Washington, and the comedic Pineapple Express) with ease. Following the death of his wife, John Munn (Dermot Mulroney, My Best Friend's Wedding) moves to Georgia with his two sons Chris (Jamie Bell, Billy Elliot) and Tim (Devon Alan, Simon Birch) in hopes of making a new start for his family. Once there, rebellious Chris finds a kindred spirit in his Uncle Deel (Josh Lucas, American Psycho), who recently left prison and still holds a grudge against his brother for marrying the woman he loved. Resentments soon boil over with tragic consequences sending Uncle Deel in hot pursuit of his fleeing nephews in the dramatic thriller Undertow. Enter Harold' s mistress, lounge singer Bonita Friml (Bette Midler, The Rose), a prize in the eyes of Willie, in the romantic comedy Jinxed. Jinxed is directed by Don Siegel (Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Dirty Harry) from a screenplay by Frank D. Gilroy and David Newman based on a story by Gilroy. STREET DATE: MARCH 22. As it turns out Palmer is more motivated than anyone imagines.Enter Eddie Keaton (Nelson), a low-rent con artist in need of cash and on the run from a loan shark (Andrew Dice Clay, Blue Jasmine). The Parker family celebrates a warmer–but no less festive – season in My Summer Story, a sequel to A Christmas Story starring Mary Steenburgen (Melvin and Howard), Charles Grodin and Kieran Culkin. The laughs are hardier and the adventures more adventurous as Ralphie Parker (Kieran Culkin, Father of the Bride) goes in search of the perfect spinning top in order to beat his arch rival and school bully Lug Ditka (Whit Hertford, Jurassic Park), while Mrs. Parker (Steenburgen) and Mr. Parker (Grodin) cope with the boisterous neighbors, among other summer pursuits. Re: The One and Only Kino Lorber and Olive Films Blu-Ray Thread
I truly starting to dislike Olive films, and almost wish they just go out of business. Every time they have a release. I cringe seeing the titles as I know it will just be one more classic film, that i can't get due to no subtitles.
In this case, Making The Grade and The Boost. There's been over a dozen films I had to shy away from. And when they release an obscure film, it's just almost definite, that no other company will ever release them. So, we are stuck with the dvds forever it seems. Seriously, start adding subtitles Olive. Is it really that cost inefficient? Because you are releaseing so many all time 80's classics. |
Re: The One and Only Kino Lorber and Olive Films Blu-Ray Thread
Kill Me Again starring Mr. & Mrs. Kilmer is a pretty good noir.
