I had a chance to get one of those earlier this year – still boxed – from a wholesaler on Kijiji, but put it off due to family commitments and it didn't last long. Been checking listings ever since hoping one might turn up, but no luck. Hopefully these little hints have legs. :)

I’m worried about that as well. That would also mean new 4K player with 3D, right? Is that likely otherwise what’s the point of 4K 3D tv?

LG's 3D was passive, with a polarizing screen reversing polarity on every line, meaning each eye got every other line, so a 1080p screen effectively showed 540 lines per eye (still 1920 pixels across). With a 4K screen, each eye gets 1080 lines. So a 4K screen is the only way for a passive screen to show the full resolution of a 3D Blu-ray.

Also, on a 4K screen, the pixels are more densely packed, so while some complained about the larger 1080p screens having a "screen-door" effect where people could see the black lines in between, this was greatly reduced on a 4K set. I have an LG 2016 4K passive 3D set, and when watching 3D I can't see any lines or anything.

Additionally, if they wanted to pump 4K 3D content now, it'd more likely be through a smartTV app instead of updating the UHD Blu-ray spec.

No 3D movies exist in 4K on disc. All 3D discs are 1080p. So you can keep using the current 3D player.

Do you want to play 4k discs? If so, buy a new player. If you don't need to play 4k discs, you don't need to buy one. What sort of mental gymnastics am I missing here?

I remember reading somewhere that you can't have a 3D 4K TV anymore because the polarization described above prevents the light levels (NITS) needed for HDR (and the other advanced systems). It's like having a pair of sunglasses on the screen. The 3D 4K TVs that originally came out were prior to HDR. The only way to do it would be for active 3D and apparently that was not going to happen. I'm sorry I can't find the cite as I think I read it in a Home Theater magazine.

This is incorrect, my LG OLED55E6P 55" Class E6 Series 4K UHD has HDR.

Keep in mind that the polarized layer doesn't block light, but directs it a particular way. Without 3D glasses on, the video is just as bright as anything. With 3D glasses, the brightness it cut in half since each eye is only getting half the light, but that's true of active lenses too due to the shuttering of light.

You don't need a 4K player to play 3D content on a 4K TV. The 4K 3D sets can take the normal two 1080p images 3D Blu-ray sends and show it fine.

And plenty of UHD Blu-ray players can play 3D Blu-rays. I use an Xbox One S to play both UHD Blu-rays and 3D Blu-rays.

It looks like Samsung was the only manufacturer that didn't have 3D capability in all its players. That shouldn't be an issue now since Samsung doesn't make players anymore.

My 3D version is in transit, but I have seen the film itself and thought it was pretty good (7/10). While I can't disagree with many of the criticisms levelled at Anderson's films, I rarely find them boring because he knows how to pace the stories, stages large-scale action sequences cleanly and without phone or excessive shaky cam, and seems to put all of the money on screen. Really looking forward to seeing it again in 3D.

Agreed! The only reason I did was because my local library had a copy and I didn't realize at the time that there would be a 3D Blu-ray released anywhere. :)
