Saw it in 2D IMAX for the premier and than later in 3D IMAX. 3D was an even better experience.

IMAX fucking sucks now. They run one 3D showing early in the day, then the rest in 2D. That makes as much sense as making the screen smaller. They can’t claim to be an “immersive movie experience” anymore.

Years and years back they ran EVERY show in 3D, as they should.

According to Wikipedia, there are 17 3D movies in 2025, including some that are upcoming. Aside from NE ZHA 2, that list definitely leaves off a number of foreign films that have definitely played in 3D on North American soil in larger markets, which adds to the total. Admittedly, those aren’t peak numbers like a decade ago, but there’s still some life in the format. :) The only thing that makes me hesitate in seeing 3D films theatrically is the knowledge that I’ll be forking over even more money when and if the movie comes out on 3D Blu-ray. So sometimes I just skip the theatrical experience. This is especially true with those Japanese Marvel 3D/4K combos now running upwards of $100 a pop. Ugh. The Turbine discs are comparatively more affordable, but still a bit pricey unless you buy their combo deals. |

If that’s true, then movie audiences are even dumber than I ever thought they were. Avoiding 3D makes as much sense as avoiding a big screen. For IMAX to pander to these people has destroyed their reputation as the “perfect” place to see a movie.
Some things just eventually go out of fashion with the greater public, whether you personally still like them or not. |

So by that logic, you’d expect theaters to have showings of musicals with all the musical numbers cut out, to appease those who don’t like musicals.

Musicals, Mel Gibson and 3D are no longer (or at least currently) money makers. If musicals, Mel Gibson and 3D did bang up business at the theater, we would be inundated with all three. But they are not so they get either phased out or just used sparingly. For example, in my area there are usually both 3D and 2D IMAX showings for every movie that has the 3D option, and I can tell you unequivocally, that the 2D showing ALWAYS have more viewers than the 3D showings. Always. You can check the seat sales at most every theater now and I would put money down that it is that way not just in my area. So why would they keep throwing good money after bad? |
Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
There is only ONE proper way to show any movie. If it was done in 3D (either natively shot or post-converted), that’s how it should be shown. If it’s a movie people want to see then they’ll either see it the right way or not at all. If they don’t like 3D, they can go see something else. This is getting to be like the old “widescreen vs full screen” thing.
Having worked at theaters in the past, it’s usually the idiots who speak louder and get the most attention. 30 years ago the theater I worked at would have people complain that the sound was too loud even when it wasn’t, and the idiot manager we had made us be super careful of that. We were already playing them lower than reference level because that was too loud for a lot of people. |
Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
I would argue that if it was "post-converted" then it wasn't meant to be only viewed in 3D and was more of an afterthought, quick buck or a novelty. I have not seen many (or any) filmmakers state they post-converted a movie for 3D because that is what they wanted. The filmmakers that wanted 3D shot in 3D.
If, for example Creature From The Black Lagoon, which was shot not only with 3D cameras but with specific shots in mind for 3D, then I would agree with you. And this is coming from a fan of 3D movies. |
Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
Most of the Marvel movies were shot with post-conversion in mind. I was surprised that the “Piranha” remake was post-converted as it looked like it was shot in real 3D. I know Paramount wanted “Noah” released in 3D but the director didn’t, it ended up being released only in 2D in the US but 3D in other countries. That’s an odd case though. The 2D versions I’ve seen at home (reviewed a few on this site because that’s what I was sent, but I then bought the 3D editions) still include the credits for the 3D conversions, so I would still consider 3D to be the “correct” version in those cases.
These days, why would anyone post-convert a movie just for a “cash grab” when theaters will then hardly even show it? |

I have zero idea what it costs to post-convert a movie to 3D. I know they can vary in quality quite a bit, but I don't know if that is due to the price tag or the company who is doing it. |
Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
The reality is, James Cameron is the only director who still gives a crap about 3D anymore. No one else shoots in native 3D. They don't have stereographers on set to advise with camera set-ups. Nor do they give 3D any thought at all during production. They shoot what they want to shoot in 2D the way they'd always been trained to shoot it, and if the studio decides to hand the thing over to some firm to do a 3D conversion with A.I. afterwards... whatever. That's somebody else's responsibility. The director will probably never even look at it.

January 20:
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...cf51e3777e.png With The Flesh and Blood Show, Pete Walker (House of Whipcord) transitioned from crime thrillers and nudie pictures to full-blown horror, where he would evolve into one of the genre’s most playful and perverse directors. Billed as “An Appalling Amalgam of Carnage and Carnality,” The Flesh and Blood Show is an homage to the blood-splattered, sex-smeared theatre known as the Grand Guignol. Shuttered and cursed by an especially tragic production of Othello, a seaside theatre reopens its doors as a groovy musical revue, only to have several performers fall victim to the deadly curse. For this Kino Cult release, the 3-D sequences have been newly aligned by the 3-D Film Archive LLC, and are presented in both stereoscopic and anaglyph formats. |
Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
I already own the 2014 release from Redemption, but I guess that's out of print. The 3D also got poor reviews.
This sounds like it has a new transfer and alignment for the 3D: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=280535 |
Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
^ I was wondering about that myself. I also have the older disc, but it stands to reason the Archive would tidy it up properly. The Kino Cult line has been a great ‘umbrella’ so far for some of this offbeat stuff. Wouldn’t mind seeing a couple of other Pete Walker pictures moved into it.

The time of transitioning to a projector grows near. Anyone have any recommendations for 3D projectors?

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.
My friend recently got an AWOL Vision short throw projector. I definitely want one now. The 3D on it is nearly perfect, better than my LG which has some crosstalk. I had worried that the picture wouldn’t be bright enough, but it certainly is. In fact when I first saw it I had just seen a movie at the local IMAX theater and been underwhelmed by the dark picture there.
A few caveats however- there IS noticeable rainbow effect, particularly on black and white material. I seemed to not notice it after watching for a few minutes, but I’d still like to see this improved. On 3D material, the picture first shows as a squeezed top/bottom image and you have to manually activate 3D with the remote. Wish they would fix that also. I would still buy one today if my TV died, but in the meantime hoping they’ll fix these issue and would like to wait til I finally move before getting one so I can set up the largest screen possible. |

No official reason was given, so it's just speculation, but the strikes could've played a part, in that they delayed production so the time needed to do a 3D conversion before release wasn't there. Also, Dune Part Two had some scenes shot with IMAX film and 70mm cameras, so they could've shifted focus to the IMAX version instead of a 3D version. This isn't the first sequel to not get a 3D version after the first one did. The same thing happened with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. |
