Re: Star Trek TNG remastered on its way for 2012

Also: I hope against hope that when they release season 3 on Blu next year, Paramount and CBS will have the presence of mind to release "The Best of Both Worlds" parts I and II as a big screen event. This famed two-parter was meant to be seen on a big screen. I'd plunk down hard cash for that.

I hadn't seen that (the little promo pictures at the top seem obsessed with Tomboy), so thank you for posting this.

I'm pretty excited for this, even if it is the first season. Like you, I think there's a lot to like about S1, it truly feels more like TOS at times, before the TNG cast and crew got their own vibe going in S3.

It was filmed for TV, but it's epic enough for a movie.

Probably better phrasing would be "This famed two-parter deserves to be seen on a big screen."

Yup, that's what I meant. I mean, come on, that two-part episode is more cinematic the majority of those 4 TNG films (especially the last 2).

Re: Star Trek TNG remastered on its way for 2012

Unfortunately, there's a rather major audio error on Encounter at Farpoint. The audio channel has been mixed into the both the centre and right channels. The effect is NOT on the Sampler disc, only on the complete S1 BD set.

The entire episode? How did that slip by Quality Control? Is that with the 7.1 audio or the original 2.0?

Yeah, the entire episode. Sounds awful, practically unwatchable...

Re: Star Trek TNG remastered on its way for 2012

Some others are saying the audio is messed up on several episodes. Now I don't know whether to jump on the price this week and hope for mail in upgrades, or wait for replacements and hope for another sale?

Has Paramount ever had to do an exchange for a problem like this?

Re: Star Trek TNG remastered on its way for 2012

Dang well that sucks. I'm thinking of getting it from Best Buy since the price is good especially with the $10 gift card. I might just order and hope they do a replacement program.

So after spending a gazillion dollars remastering the picture they screw the audio up. Awesome.

Re: Star Trek TNG remastered on its way for 2012

Someone from trekbbs has a list.
From http://www.trekbbs.com/showpost.php?...postcount=4322
The plot thickens. Here's the list I've compiled of where dialogue can be heard in the mix (please correct me if I've made a mistake):

FL = front left
C = center
FR = front right

"Encounter at Farpoint" - C, FR
"The Naked Now" - C
"Code of Honor" - C
"The Last Outpost" - C
"Where No One Has Gone Before" - C
"Lonely Among Us" - C
"Justice" - C
"The Battle" - C
"Hide and Q" - FL, C, FR
"Haven" - FL, C, FR
"The Big Goodbye" - FL, C, FR
"Datalore" - FL, C, FR
"Angel One" - C
"11001001" - FL, C, FR
"Too Short a Season" - FL, C, FR
"When the Bough Breaks" - C
"Home Soil" - C
"Coming of Age" - C
"Heart of Glory" - C
"The Arsenal of Freedom" - C
"Symbiosis" - C
"Skin of Evil" - C
"We'll Always Have Paris" - C
"Conspiracy" - C
"The Neutral Zone" - C

***

I'll just note that I didn't bother putting my ear next to any of the rear channels to check. The only real troublesome one is the pilot because it is unbalanced and because it differs from the Next Level sampler... but the others in the middle there are strange anomalies as well.
Now I am not sure if I should buy this now or wait.

Sounds like it's for the remixes only.

And I can't speak for other reviewers, but we can't realistically watch every episode of season sets within the short window of "screener arrival to street date" (such a deadline isn't mandatory, but it's implied with higher profile titles like this). I'll admit that I didn't watch "Encounter at Farpoint" from the new season set because I already covered it during my "The Next Level"...and most people would assume that we'd get the exact same presentation on both releases. Not so, apparently. I also read a comment elsewhere [EDIT: the list is right above!] that a handful of episodes (on Discs 3 and 4) have center channel audio mixed to the FL/FR channels as well. I did not hear these specific problems during my viewing of said episodes, but I'm sure the less balanced "Farpoint" mix would've stuck out much further.

After crawling apologetically through occasional slip-ups like this, I suppose a better middle-ground would be to at least skim the episodes I don't have time to view in full. Sincere regrets for not catching it earlier, but I'm glad the problem has at least been reported. Oddly enough, my only initial nitpick with the audio (lossy original DD 2.0 mixes instead of DTS-HD 2.0) went generally unreported by other outlets.

If it's only the 7.1 audio, I'm still in. I planned on watching the episodes in 2.0 anyways.

Re: Star Trek TNG remastered on its way for 2012

I don't have a 7.1 audio system, so I'm going to bite the bullet and get it. Pretty much all of my BDs I watch through my TV's speakers anyways. Paramount BD sets are rarely on sale and I don't think we will see it drop this low again in a long time.

FFS - I just unwrapped my copy. I have a 7.1 system and was looking forward to this set.

I went ahead and picked this up. With the BB price, trade up and rz coupons, I can deal with the replacement program...

DTS-HD 2.0 has supposedly had compatibility problems with some receivers, so I think most companies try to avoid it. (Although, personally I think it's one specific studio that is not encoding stuff properly.)

To be honest, what the point of using DTS-HD MA for 2.0 or 1.0 mixes? All you do is take bits away from the video encode.
