Disney Goes with Blu-ray Combo First for ‘Pirates’

Disney Goes with Blu-ray Combo First for ‘Pirates’
14 Jul, 2011
By: Chris Tribbey

In a first for a major box office blockbuster, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has chosen to delay a DVD-only release when it streets Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides on Oct. 18.

Instead, Disney will release the film as a two-disc Blu-ray Disc and DVD combo pack ($39.99) and a five-disc combo pack with 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD and digital copy ($49.99).

A DVD-only release will street Nov. 15, a Disney representative said.

Both Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and Lionsgate previously have released a title as a Blu-ray combo pack with DVD, with no DVD-only release, but none of those releases grossed $1 billion-plus worldwide.

Disney also will street a 15-disc Blu-ray collection ($169.99) including all four films in the “Pirates” franchise, and is offering the film as both a 3D ($49.99) and high-definition download ($39.99).

DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group estimates that as of the end of the first quarter of the year, there are nearly 30 million households in the United States with a Blu-ray player.

They sloppily clarify what they mean by saying it's a first for "a major box office blockbuster", which...well, Snow White was too, though that was seventy years ago.

Theatrical release. Not catalog.

So now DVD Consumers get to pay more money for the DVD if they want it the day it 'comes out'. Eh. Disney would rather do this then put out catalog.

There's one for "Cars 2" also. Future Shop in Canada has these metal packs for "The Incredibles" (not out yet) and "Bambi" (just came out today.) The pictures of the "Bambi" one make it look gorgeous. Unfortunately, they can't be purchased empty like the ones in the U.S. can, so there's no way to get them without re-buying the whole set at full price. Sad face.

Target's ad for next week. Looks like the Pirates 3D set will be $24.99 after a $5 off coupon.

I am all for BR, but Disney is only thinking about getting more money for the movie.

Combo is more $$$, DVD alone is about $10 cheaper.

I will not be buying the DVD only, but Disney is being very greedy and not giving people a choice.

Don't they think people have spent enough money on the movie, now they want to shaft the fans even more.

It's clearly not a Viva Metal Box. Look at the spine of the example on their website. That's what the Target Iron Man 2 was, but clearly not what these Best Buy Exclusive are.

P.S. Amity, please check your PMs.

Re: Disney Goes with Blu-ray Combo First for ‘Pirates’

Interesting, I always thought everything was coming Nov 15, so this coming out Oct is a nice surprise. Always thought Nov was too long after the theatrical release.

Itunes seems to have both the regular and HD version set for Oct 18 ($15/$20).

That said... prob will just wait for a good sale or someone to gift it to me.

I really wished I had enjoyed this movie more than I did in the theater - which I feel asleep on and thought the 3D wasn't that great. oh well... maybe the next film will be better and not shot in so much darkness.

Those of you who have pre orders with amazon be sure to notify amazon via the notify us of a lower price on the pirates 3D item page to help ensure amazon matches the best buy 26.99 price so that way we can get this for 18.99 after the 8.00 Amazon pre order coupon.

It was just lowered to $28.99, but I canceled my order anyway. To help you guys out, I used "found at a lower price" as the reason for cancellation, but the reality is that I want the bonus disc and special case from Best Buy even if it costs me a few extra dollars ($5 coupon vice the $8 I had from Amazon).

And for those of you that don't know (I just learned this myself), the Blu-ray/DVD combo pack only has 4 Special Features:
  • Disney Second Screen: Sync On Stranger Tides with your computer or iPad via Disney's downloadable app to enjoy exclusive behind-the-scenes content and other goodies.
  • Audio Commentary: with Executive producer John DeLuca and director Rob Marshall
  • Lego Pirates of the Caribbean (HD, 5 minutes)
  • Bloopers of the Caribbean (HD, 3 minutes)
while the 5 disc 3-D version has an additional Blu-ray with all of the above plus these features (75 extra minutes worth):
  • Legends of On Stranger Tides (HD, 36 minutes)
  • In Search of the Fountain (HD, 11 minutes)
  • Last Sail, First Voyage (HD, 8 minutes)
  • Under the Scene: Bringing Mermaids to Life (HD, 9 minutes)
  • Deleted and Extended Scenes (HD, 9 minutes)
  • Johnny Vs. Geoffrey (HD, 3 minutes)
I had no interest in the 3-D disc but for the price above plus an additional bonus disc from BB, for major fans I think this is the way to go.

Re: Disney Goes with Blu-ray Combo First for ‘Pirates’

don't forget the $5.00 coupon from Disney Rewards on the 5-disc only which makes the 3D combo cheaper than the regular blu-ray combo.
